Dear IUFRO members of Forest Products,
In a move to make IUFRO D5 move visible to the Forest Products research
community, here's encouraging more academics/scientists of IUFRO member
institutions to sign up to div5 mailing list, so that you'd be updated on
the latest Forest Products events sponsored by IUFRO in future. Suprisingly,
this D5 mailing list stands at only about 67 subscribers at the moment!
Please ALSO pass on this invitation to your non-IUFRO member friends of
relevant organisations who may be interst to subscribe to this mailing list.
Of course encourage them to be IUFRO members.
Please click on the underlined below to subscribe to D5 (Forest Products)
mailing list.
Cheers

Dave,
can you please pass this information on to your mailing list?
Thanks. Vicki
Please see the attached request for proposals of samples to be used at
the Palais des Nations, Geneva, Switzerland, in an "Exhibition of
Innovative Wood Products". This will first be exhibited during our
SWST/UNECE-Timber Committee Convention in October 2010 and then during
the Exhibit for the International Year of the Forest in January 2011.
If you would like to have one of your products (either commercial or
research) displayed in this prominent place, please contact me before
July 15.
I am excited about this unique opportunity and hope you will
participate! You can find out more about our upcoming convention by
visiting our webpages at
http://swst.org/meetings/AM10/index.html
A detailed program will soon be out, but you can begin registration
now. There is no registration fee. However, there is a fee for the
banquet and the tour. I hope to see many of you there!

Dear colleagues
We remind you of our web survey about the effects of forest
certification on biodiversity conservation in tropical forests. If you
did not have the time yet, we invite you to please visit
https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/V6CJBK6 and complete this survey. It
takes only ten minutes. We intend to close the survey by 15 June.
Please also share with colleagues. It is open to everyone. We are
especially keen to have more input from forest managers!
Through this anonymous survey, we try to obtain opinions and
perspectives from forest management and conservation researchers,
practitioners and other experts on the following broad topics:
*The effectiveness of certification for biodiversity conservation
*The objectives of biodiversity management in tropical forests
*Current management and certification practices
These are important topics and we want to hear your views. The more
input we get the more valuable the survey will be.
Background: The European Tropical Forest Research Network (ETFRN) plans
to issue an ETFRN News about experiences and best practices regarding
forest management certification and the conservation of forest
biodiversity. The editors of the ETFRN News (Douglas Sheil, Jack Putz
and undersigned) are conducting a brief survey to accompany the papers
contributed by authors for this news issue.
Thank you very much for your collaboration, and again we request you to
please forward to colleagues.
Best regards and many thanks for all the input!

Dear Sir/Madam,
It is our great pleasure to invite you to participate in the inaugural
International Symposium on Forestry and Forest Products (ISFFP). ISFFP 2010
is being organized in conjunction with the Forest Research Institute
Malaysia's (FRIM) 25th anniversary this year. The main objective is to
discuss and disseminate the latest R&D findings that address the often
competing and challenging needs of both the forestry sector and forest
products industry.
Malaysia is committed to combating climate change, as reflected by the
Honourable Prime Minister's pledge at the recently concluded COP 15 under
the United Nations Framework on Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to
voluntarily reduce by up to 40% of its carbon emission in terms of emission
intensity based on Gross Domestic Product by 2020 from the 2005 level. The
Symposium is therefore aptly themed, "Addressing global concerns and
changing societal needs".
There will be discussions on issues pertaining to;
. climate change,
. biodiversity,
. forest ecology,
. forest plantations,
. applied biotechnology in forestry,
. green technology,
. eco-tourism,
. socio-economy,
. medicinal products from plant material,
. improved processing, and
. utilisation of wood and non-wood products.
ISFFP 2010 therefore, aims to bring together all the stakeholders to reflect
on these issues, in the hope of striking a balance between addressing global
concerns and fulfilling societal needs for sustainable development.
Those interested in presenting a paper or poster should submit an abstract
to the secretariat at isffp(a)frim.gov.my by 1 June 2010.
In the meantime, should you require any assistance regarding ISFFP 2010,
please do not hesitate to visit ISFFP 2010's official website at

Dear IAWA Members:
I am pleased to announce another symposium -- "Practical and scientific
efforts in support of legal logging" organized by Dr. Alex C. Wiedenhoeft,
Center for Wood Anatomy Research, Forest Products Laboratory.
The session will bring together scholars and experts from around the world
to speak about forest certification and chain of custody, international
legal logging policy, training in wood identification in support of
international treaties, and chemical and molecular tools for wood
identification and provenancing. The mixture of scientific researchers and
experts with field experience in the forests of the world promises to
provide the attendees with a robust characterization of many of the problems
posed by illegal logging, and will highlight some of the scientific and
economic solutions to those problems.
The speakers include:
Dr. Hisashi Abe, FFPRI, Japan
Dr. Peter Gasson, Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, UK
Dr. Akira Kagawa, FFPRI, Japan
Dr. Gerald Koch, IWBWPFRCFFP, Germany
A representative (TBA) of the Environmental Investigation Agency, USA
Dr. Andrew Lowe, Adelaide Univesrity, Australia
Dr. Tereza Cristina Monteiro Pastore, Brazilian Forest Service, Brazil
Scott Poynton, The Forest Trust, Switzerland
Dr. Wiedenhoeft also wishes to convene a discussion group of interested
parties to discuss long-term international research collaboration,
enforcement cooperation, and information exchange in support of legal
logging; specific information about this discussion group will be
distributed when it becomes available. If you are interested in attending
being a part of this group, please feel free to contact Dr. Wiedenhoeft at
<mailto:acwieden@wisc.edu> acwieden(a)wisc.edu to communicate your interest;
this will assist in planning the logistics of the discussion group.
Please remember that abstracts for papers and posters are due May 1, 2010,
and that the early registration discount ends May 1, 2010 as well.
I am looking forward to seeing you in fair Madison, Wisconsin, this June for
what promises to be a successful and rewarding conference.
