Reminder IUFRO Division 5 conference 2027 - call for sessions - 15th March 2026

Dear colleague,
this email is a gentle reminder on the call of sessions for the next IUFRO All-Division 5 conference "Future Forest Use: Advancing Wood Science and Forest Products for a Circular Bioeconomy" in 2027 in Tartu, Estonia.
It is on us to create an attractive conference programme with interesting sessions to invite colleagues to share their science and research with us and discuss the future of sustainable forestry, wood science, forest products and the circular bio-economy. The conference will be jointly organised in cooperation with the International Society of Wood Science and Technology (SWST) and the Estonian University of Life Science.
The call for sessions is still open, submission deadline is 15 March, 2026. Please team up with colleagues coordinating the numerous research groups and working parties of IUFRO Division 5 (https://www.iufro.org/divisions/50000-forest-products ) and submit a session proposal to create the attractive scientific programme of the conference. Also cross-linking to other IUFRO divisions' research groups and working parties is a good idea to reflect on the diversity of topics related to forest products.

The conference will address several key topics, including:

<p>In our new <i>Season 3 of Branching out: the forest podcast</i>, we explore how scientists collaborate across disciplines to tackle emerging topics. This work happens through IUFRO Task Forces. We kick off the Season with the topic of <strong>bioeconomy</strong> and the <i>Task Force on Building an Integrated Vision of the Forest-Based Sector within a Bioeconomy</i>.<br /><br />Host <strong>Gerda Wolfrum</strong> and co-host <strong>Fernanda Gonzalez</strong> from IUFRO HQ spoke with <strong>Ivana Živojinović</strong>, a senior scientist at BOKU University in Vienna (Institute of Forest, Environmental and Natural Resource Policy and the Center for Bioeconomy), and <strong>Ricardo Vargas Carpintero</strong>, who recently completed his PhD at the University of Hohenheim, Germany and is now based in Colombia. They shared their insights on how the forest-based sector can contribute to a bioeconomy.<br /><br />The concept of bioeconomy is not new, but it has broadened into a more holistic framing that connects the ways how we produce, how we use and value biological resources within larger sustainability goals. The aim is to provide sustainable solutions across different economic sectors, by shifting from fossil-based inputs and linear economical models towards circular and regenerative systems. <br /><br />Ivana explained, "<i>This includes aspects of reuse, recycling, using resource efficiency, and ensuring that value creation does not come at the expense of biodiversity, of water or even people's rights and livelihoods</i>." Bioeconomy is not a single model; countries and regions emphasize different pathways.<br /><br />In this context, Ricardo talked about the situation in Latin America where biodiversity plays a key role. He said, <i>"Incorporating biodiversity in the bioeconomy to create economic value and contribute to the environment, for example, by restoring degraded lands or providing ecosystem services such as carbon sequestration, is one of these visions that is quite important in the Latin American context."</i> <br /><br />The forest-based sector is integral to a bioeconomy, but its scope is still quite narrow and mainly focused on timber, fiber and carbon. To make the scope of the forest sector within a bioeconomy broader and multifunctional, further innovation - not only technical or technological innovation, also institutional, organizational and social innovation – is required. In addition, cooperation between policymakers, public sector, primary producers, industry, and society must be enhanced. As Ivana pointed out, "<i>Bioeconomy transition as such will be successful only if it's coherent and inclusive and really grounded in diversity. Bamboo Unboxed Workshop | April 6–11, 2026
The Bamboo Unboxed Workshop, officially recognized now as a World Bamboo Certified Training, will take place at Orangutan Haven (OUH) [https://orangutanhaven.com/] in North Sumatra—an internationally recognized sanctuary for rescued orangutans and a hub for ecological education.
This six-day intensive program focuses on bamboo as a primary construction material and structural system, guiding participants through the full lifecycle of bamboo construction, from material selection and treatment to joinery, geometry, and collaborative assembly. The workshop integrates material intelligence, structural logic, and hands-on building within a living ecological context where architecture, landscape, and conservation intersect.
The program is organized by Giant Grass [https://www.giantgrass.com/] and Orangutan Haven [https://orangutanhaven.com/] with support from Ecolodge Bukit Lawang [https://bukitlawang.ecolodges.id/] and is facilitated by an international team of bamboo master builders, architects, and conservation experts. Canada Impact+ Research Chairs in Climate-related Disasters and Community Resilience

The Natural Resources Institute in the Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of Environment, Earth and Resources at the University of Manitoba invites applications for a Canada Impact+ Research Chairs in Community-Based Resource Management and the work of the former Disaster Research Institute. A Canada Impact+ Research Chair is one of the most prestigious international awards globally, providing Chairholders and their research teams with an award of up to $8 million over eight years ($1 million per year). In addition, there is potential for a four-year extension at 50% of the initial award value per year. This extension will be determined by an external review of the award in Year 7.
Successful nominees will be expected to start their position at the University of Manitoba within 12 months of accepting the award. The successful candidate will be appointed to a full-time tenured position at the rank of Full Professor, or at the rank of Associate Professor with an opportunity to apply for promotion to Full Professor within two years of starting their appointment. Salary will be based on the candidate’s qualifications and experience, in accordance with the University of Manitoba Faculty Association (UMFA) collective agreement. The position will be provided with a start-up package and opportunities to compete for additional equipment funding through the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI).
The focus of this position is climate-related disasters and risks, and their management, governance, and/or community resilience. The research should result in transformational and translational impacts on Canada and beyond.
While this is a research-intensive position, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to teach and mentor undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate students in the Institute, Faculty, and the University.
Only candidates who are internationally based (both working and residing outside of Canada) at the time of the intake’s application deadline are eligible to apply.
Expected start date of appointment: Within 12 months of the award date (September 2026).
End Date: 2026-02-22. Posting may remain open beyond the date of 2026-02-22, until filled.

We are pleased to announce some updates regarding the third 'From Forests to Heritage' conference. This will take place alongside the '2026 World Wood Day Symposium' and the '8th IUFRO Forest Products Culture Colloquium' from 19 to 22 May 2026 in Klagenfurt.
The deadline for submissions is approaching – 31 January. This deadline will not be postponed. Please be on time!
We will contact all those who submitted a proposal as soon as possible.
At the same time, we will begin the registration process and create a new page on the 'From Forests to Heritage' website (https://fromforeststoheritage.dendro.at/)
