2011 INBAR Bamboo Industrial Tour
18-24 November 2011, Zhejiang, China
The objective of the annual bamboo study tours is to share the experience of
Chinese bamboo development and to promote bamboo development in other
countries.
The bamboo study tours have attracted many attentions; hence we will
organize the 2011 Bamboo Industrial Tour to China 18-24 November for 7 days
to visit Zhejiang province(5 days classroom training are planned but it will
be arranged if there are enough people interested in it). The cost in China
is 1200$/person covering accommodation, food, transportation and entrance
tickets in China between 18-24 November. Participants should cover their
international flights and the domestic flights to and from Hangzhou as well
as travel insurance and visa fee.
Here, you can read the <http://world-bamboo.blogspot.com/> reports of 2005,
2007, 2008 and 2009 bamboo tours and see some
<http://s261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/bamboo-photo/> photos of the tours.
The itinerary will be available soon and below is the draft for the
visiting. All participants should arrive in Hangzhou airport on 18 November
and depart from Hangzhou airport on 24 November.
In Zhejiang we will visit some leading bamboo flooring manufacturers like
DASSO (who produced bamboo fire-proof ceiling in Madrid international
airport, which won 2006 Sterlinz prize. DASSO is producing bamboo veneer for
70,000 BMW cars' interior decoration and 40m long bamboo wind turbine blade
manufacturer), producer of strand woven bamboo lumber and floor),
Shengbang(bamboo concrete form and firber board), Xieqiang(bamboo curtain
and mat); Kangxing bamboo shoot processing company, Shenshi Bio-product
company(bamboo extract like flavonoid, bamboo beer), Wenzhao, the biggest
bamboo charcoal company(charcoal and vinegar) and the only

Charcoal Museum in the world, some primitive processing workshops(bamboo
strips) on community level, Huachun bamboo furniture company, Jitai bamboo
processing machine company and Anji bamboo product market(hundreds bamboo
products including bamboo clothes). We will also visit the biggest bamboo
botanic garden in the world, <http://www.cnbamboo.cn/YQJG.asp> Anji Bamboo
Garden, which has more than 300 bamboo species plus two giant pandas, and
Chinese Bamboo Museum in this garden; High-yield bamboo plantation, bamboo
film production base (

eco-tourism sites, ornamental bamboo nursery. We will visit some bamboo
research institutions like Zhejiang Agro-Forestry University (visiting
bamboo products showroom, bamboo charcoal, bamboo tissue culture lab). We
try to dialogues with local politicians and experts on bamboo sector
policies and technology, which encourage the enterprisers to invest in other
bamboo production countries like Africa and Asia and America etc. We may
help participants find suitable bamboo processing machine manufacturers
(strand woven bamboo, bamboo floor, charcoal briquette and so on).

<<second_announcement.pdf>>
Dear colleagues:
many thanks for the positive feedback that our proposal on a "CT and x-ray"
session will jointly be hosted under the umbrella of WG 5.01.00 and WG
5.02.01. I understood from the correspondance that WG 5.02.01 will be the
appropriate address to send in the abstracts for the session. We very much
appreciate this support. We would be please to support you in reviewing
proposed contributions for this subtopic on the CT and x-ray scanning.
As the preparation for the conference is progressing fast and deadlines are
coming close we would like to ask for your assistance to disseminate the
information on this session via your email lists and invite interested
colleagues to contribute.
Please find attached the "call for papers" for this specific topic.
<<IUFRO2012_call_papers_CTsession.doc>>
We would like to call for papers focussing on the application of CT and
x-ray scanning both for forest based research and wood processing. For the
session contributions are expected on applications of x-ray and CT to
support forest management and roundwood quality control, and improved raw
material utilisation through processing optimisation based on x-ray based
technology.
Background:
As x-ray based technology provides information on a high spatial resolution
for roundwood, the data base for quality modelling can be widened
drastically in comparison to destructive sampling. With regards to material
flow along the forest-wood chain, the application of non-destructive x-ray
based technology to roundwood provides information in both directions
upstream and downstream. In the upstream direction back into the forest, the
information on internal roundwood characteristics and quality features can
be linked to forest management and tree growth. In the downstream direction,
internal log information can be used for production optimisation for
improved raw material utilisation.
It would be very much appreciated if you could distribute this call directly
to the members of your workgroups. If this is not possible, could you please
provide us with some contacts for further dissemination. We will also
directly inform colleagues about the option to contribute to such a session.
Yours sincerely

There is a WORLDWIDE NEED for disaster relief housing. Recent catastrophic
events in Japan, Haiti, Chile, Pakistan and Indonesia are perfect examples
of the devastation wreaked by natural events which affect those countries'
inhabitants' most basic needs: clean water, food and shelter. Temporary
housing becomes the breeding ground for disease and desperation. Swiftly
erected and durable disaster relief housing is needed.
The 2011 Sustainable Disaster Relief Housing Conference is a first of its
kind international forum and a unique opportunity to raise the visibility
for your organization or company among industry peers and participate in
this timely discussion:
- Listen to experts share their experiences from several recent catastrophic
events and discuss the needs resulting from various climatic, geographical
and political realities.
- Explore various topics concerning the building systems available;
shipping, delivery and erection considerations; and the financing and
coordination of relief efforts to arrive at timely and affordable
sustainable solutions.
- Discuss response and preparedness strategies for mitigating delays in the
delivery of solutions for regions at risk.

Dear Colleagues,
Forest bioenergy is one of six thematic areas included in the IUFRO Strategy
2010-2014. In this context, I would like to draw your attention to the
High-level Research Conference "The Future Role of Bio-energy from Tree
Biomass in Europe" that will be held from 6 to 11 November 2011 in Vienna,
Austria.
The conference is organized by IUFRO in collaboration with the European
Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) and the European Science
Foundation (ESF), the Austrian Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry,
Environment and Water Management, and the Austrian Federal Research and
Training Centre for Forests, Natural Hazards and Landscape (BFW). The new
IUFRO Task Force on Forest Bioenergy has played a key role in developing the
scientific programme of the conference.
In 2011, the International Year of the Forest, the conference will
contribute to understanding bio-energy drivers, options and impacts on
forest growing, management and production of traditional goods and services
in the future. The scientific programme will focus on
- Availability of biomass
- Biodiversity, landscape ecology and soil water quality
- Supply chain and system evaluation
- Forest biomass as feedstock for the energy and biorefinery sector
The Conference will feature lectures by invited high-level speakers, short
talks by young and early stage researchers, poster sessions and open
discussion periods as well as a forward look. You can find detailed
information about the conference at <http://www.esf.org/index.php?id=8196>
