Dear Colleagues,
Non-wood forest products (NWFPs) are defined as all tangible plant and
animal products, other than wood, derived from forests. These products
generally include edible plant and animal products such as mushrooms, honey
and meat, medicinal and aromatic products, fodder and other raw plant and
animal materials. In recent years, domestic and international demand for
these NWFPs is increasing and forestry sector is gaining a new awareness for
the importance of NWFPs. NWFPs not only provide versatile economical,
social, cultural and ecological benefit to the general society, but also
play an essential role in livelihood of local communities which rely on
forests as their major source of income and survival. In some regions, NWFPs
can provide more income to rural communities than wood products and other
traditional timber-based forestry activities.
In this respect, an international symposium on non-wood forest products will
be organized in 8-10 September 2011 in Suleyman Demirel University, Isparta,
to bring all the stakeholders from scientific and partitioning communities
together to discuss our current knowledge of the subject. All interested
parties are welcome to join us at the "2nd International Non-wood Forest
Products Symposium" in Isparta, Turkey.
You can see details about symposium in below.

Two Scientist positions
Crown Research Institute Scion undertakes research, science and technology
development in forestry, wood product and wood-derived materials and other
biomaterials sectors. Scion's purpose is to drive innovation and growth
from these sectors to create economic value and contribute to beneficial
environmental and social outcomes for New Zealand.
New opportunities to broaden the range of value-added products from trees
have arisen with declining petroleum resources, climate change (carbon
storage and mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions), technological advances
and the advent of Industrial Biotechnology (including biorefineries) as a
new sector/business. Opportunities include using wood fibre as a source of
sugar as well as other chemicals such as tannin and lignin to make new
bio-based products. Natural fibres are also key in the replacement of glass
fibre in composite plastic materials to reduce the environmental footprint
of many manufactured products.
We have two scientist roles available in our Wood and Biofibre Technologies
and Biopolymer and Green Chemicals Technology teams, which will contribute
to developing new products and intellectual property using wood and wood
fibres in the biorefinery and smart wood contexts. Our ideal candidates will
have PhDs in the following areas: materials science, packaging, polymer
science, fibre science, lignin or polysaccharide chemistry, or engineering,
with at least five years relevant research and a strong publication record.
The candidates will play lead roles in our Biofibres program and other
programs concerned with developing new products using wood and wood fibre in
bioplastic and biomaterial matrices.
These roles require candidates who are flexible and able to work in both
large and small project teams. Evidence of acquiring multiple skill sets
and experience of collaborative projects is an advantage. You will possess
excellent verbal and written communication skills and will contribute at an
appropriate level to the preparation of technical reports and publishing
journal articles. Experience in working with clients would also be an
advantage.
Scion is proud to offer talented and motivated individuals the unique
opportunity to pursue a fulfilling professional career. With its head office
based on the edge of Rotorua's world-famous Whakarewarewa Forest, Scion also
offers an enviable working environment with excellent work/life balance
initiatives. Rotorua is one of New Zealand's leading tourist destinations
owing to its outstanding natural environment and proximity to coastal
beaches and inland lakes, native forests, geothermal areas and volcanic
ski-fields.

Dear colleagues,
we are pleased to announce the COST FP0802 Workshop on "Mixed numerical and experimental methods applied to the mechanical characterization of bio-materials" which will take place in Vila Real, Portugal, April 27-28, 2011.
The objective of the workshop is to present and discuss the benefits and problems of combined numerical/experimental methods for the study of wood and possibly also more general to bio-materials (e.g.
micro-spectroscopy, mechanical tests in ESEM, full-field measurements of deformation, Finite Element simulation and optimization methods). The workshop will provide a forum to communicate current ideas and strategies in this field.
Please find attached the announcement folder for your information and for distribution among your colleagues. Please note that the deadline for submission of abstracts is February 11, 2011.
Updated information on the workshop and on COST Action FP0802 in general can be found at the webpage http://cost-fp0802.tuwien.ac.at
Looking forward to meeting you soon in Vila Real.

16-18, 2011 in Madison, Wisconsin, USA. Learn more at

and will be made available at the conference and symposium.
CALL FOR PAPERS - www.woodandbiofibercomposites.org
Wood and other natural fibers have been used in composites for many years.
However, interest in their use as fillers and reinforcements in plastics
waned with the development of synthetic fibers such as glass and carbon
fibers. Recently there has been a resurgence of interest with one of the
largest recent examples being the birth of the wood-plastic composites
industry. This involved the interfacing of industries that have historically
known little about each other and had very different knowledge, expertise,
and perspectives.
Today, this interaction continues and these composites continue to evolve. A
new generation of composites is emerging as material behavior is better
understood, processes and performance are improved, and new opportunities
are identified. Recent trends such as the desire to increase biocontent,
growing production in different parts of the world, and, of course, the
economy will play a major role in the future of these composites.
Additionally, the advent of emerging technologies related to biopolymers,
biorefineries, and nanotechnology are generating interest in new
combinations of polymers and materials derived from wood or other natural
fibers, some of which may be very different from those currently produced.
This conference and symposium seek to bring together industry, government,
and academia to share perspectives on what the future holds.
We are inviting formal or poster presentations on the following topics:
- Additives and formulating
- Advanced reinforcements
- Biopolymer matrices
- Enhanced performance
- Future applications
- Nanotechnology in wood composites
- New processing/recycling
We look forward to meeting you in Madison, Wisconsin.
