Accepting applications for Student Conference Scholarships

Student Conference Scholarships The IUFRO Conference on Forests for People and 2013 National Outdoor Recreation Conference Student Conference Scholarships Motivated and accomplished students enrolled full-time in an outdoor recreation management, planning, or closely-related degree program are encouraged to apply. Up to at eight student scholarships will be awarded for the 2013 National Outdoor Recreation Conference. At least half of the scholarships awarded will be to qualified students from within the surrounding region. A scholarship valued at $785 will be awarded to cover lodging, conference registration, and one-year student membership to SORP. Included in this total is a $250 check to be used for travel expenses. Monday 7 1 2013 From WBO President, Michel Abadie Forging a new spirit of bamboo in Damyang. Going to Korea this past November was more than going to a country with only the goal of preparing the next World Bamboo Congress. It was more than to visit the site and test the ability of the persons in charge to give right answers to the many questions we organizers have in mind for a successful event. It was certainly more than having a survey on the capacity and willingness of the future host. Going to Korea was a big loop on the history of the World Bamboo Organization. By a strange coincidence, exactly twenty years ago, the Third World Bamboo Congress was held in Kumamoto (Japan), on the other side of the East China Sea, just about an hour flight from Damyang, Korea. For most of the people who were there, at the invitation of the Japan Bamboo Society, that meeting is still a white stone in the history of world bamboo meetings. It was an encounter that took you out of your daily life, a peculiar moment that you will forever remember. It was there, in Japan, in the place of the first well-publicized ecological and human disaster, a bamboo forest was planted to cover and reclaim the dirty soil of Minamata. It was there that the people who participated at the Third WBC decided to build a bamboo bridge across the world, with the goal to unite efforts to promote bamboo as a sustainable resource, a multi-faceted solution to so many problems. It was there that the links between members of different countries became real. And it was a time before the easy way and popularity of internet. Now it was with the same spirit that Susanne Lucas, Jan Oprins and myself went to Damyang to meet the Governor of Damyang, Mr. Choi Hyung-sik and his very dedicated team. Already last April during the 9th World Bamboo Congress held in Antwerp (Belgium), we felt a strong feeling with the Korean delegation through different exchanges and talks. Damyang, South Korea was selected as the host of the 10th World Bamboo Congress scheduled for 27 June to 1 July, 2015. This Congress will be a focus point during the 50 day-long World Bamboo Festival and Expo, which anticipates over 90,000 visitors. Surrounded by mountains and hills covered with bamboo, Damyang historically has been a traditional bamboo region, with a big market for local craftsman making everything from furniture, baskets and other utility products to food and others uses. Recent years have seen the use of bamboo decrease in the daily life of modern urban society, but the roots are still there in the ground... and in the memory. And that's the fantastic challenge of governor Choi Hyung-sik: « to improve the use of bamboo in our contemporary world ». With that goal in mind, this very discreet but fully energetic man is pushing a true bamboo revival in this county. The first results reveal that the bamboo market is growing again with a lot of new starting-up companies. For thousands of tourists and visitors, a beautiful hill garden covered by bamboos gives an impressive immersion amid the green giant culms to the top of a hill with a fantastic sightseeing view of the city. On the slope below, a huge marketing center allows visitors to find the traditional bamboo handicrafts. Not far away, there is a very interesting bamboo museum showing the multiple uses of bamboo from the past to the present and future potentials. All around the city and in the vicinity of Damyang, bamboo shops and manufacturing facilities are proof that bamboo can lead to economic development via an organic and ecologically-sustainable approach. Here in Damyang, you can really live « the bamboo renewal »! Starting with your morning shower, you will find purely organic bamboo soap and bath products. For breakfast, don't forget to taste the delicious bamboo sausage with bamboo-leaf tea. Then, go and take your bamboo bike to reach the bamboo charcoal factory. Here you can order a an array of charcoal products to purify your home and office. Another interesting stop is a visit to the studio of contemporary artists painting and sculpting with bamboo charcoal. A nice experience! Don't forget, in summer the temperature can be quite high in Damyang, so pass by a traditional craftsman to order a hand- made bamboo fan. To relax, go to the sauna and discover the very therapeutic thermal effects of a bamboo charcoal fire. The atmosphere of the place is so simple and so real that you will stay longer than expected. Finally, you will certainly be hungry. I can recommend you a good place that you will never forget! A place to share with your friends the biggest plate you have ever eaten in your life: a six-meter long bamboo culm, sliced in two parts, with different dishes between the internodes! The bamboo "plate" is coming directly from the outdoor oven, full of abalones, shrimps, chicken, beef, etc., perfectly cooked and tasty. And to drink, you will taste the traditional Korean bamboo-leaf wine. But be careful, it's alcohol volume is 15° (%)! So for sure you will have a nice bamboo dream during the night. That's the Damyang experience of « the bamboo renewal ». After very interesting visits of different local sites, meeting different persons involved in the local bamboo community, our last surprise came from governor Choi Hyung-sik himself, who showed us in his office the architect's model of the new building to be built for the 2015 World Bamboo Festival, complete with two new hotels and a bamboo observation tower. With the willingness of the Korean, this forward-thinking man knows what he wants to do with « the bamboo renewal »; he wants his region to experience positive economic development via the sustainable development of bamboo industry, to show Damyang in 2015 as a « capital of the world of bamboo ». And personally, I want to accompany this enthusiastic experience to a full success. This is why, if everyone agrees, I offer to work further as WBO President for three more years. International Conference on Wood Adhesives

International Conference on Wood Adhesives Toronto, Ontario, Canada 9-11 October 2013 The Forest Products Society, the Forest Products Laboratory and the Wood-Based Composites Center are organizing the International Conference on Wood Adhesives, which is the premier forum for scientific and technical exchange on the topic of wood adhesives. This conference has been held every 4-5 years to ensure that we have high attendance from those in the wood adhesive community and that totally new information is provided at the meeting. The wood adhesive meetings have seen continued growth in international attendance. Along with putting emphasis on international transfer of information, we want to expand the emphasis on the impact of energy on bonded wood products and the needs for more effective use of wood resources. Energy conservation and efficient use of wood resources whether in the final building performance, construction of the building, or production of bonded wood products plays an increasing role. This has led to a continuing need for research and implementation of new adhesives and bonded wood products. The conference is an important forum for interchange of knowledge and ideas for both the adhesive and the bonded wood products community. This will be the first meeting held outside the United States. Dear D5 officers, Here is what we have waiting for - opportunities to propose technical sessions. There is a need to collaborate across Research units and Divisions (I know this can be difficult, not knowing what the others are doing) since IUFRO does not encourage sessions proposed by a single RG or WP alone. Session proposals must fall under the chosen themes (below). The rest of the information are self explanatory. Do note the submission deadline is before 30 April 2013. In keeping with the spirit of the Congress title – Sustaining Forests, Sustaining People: The Role of Research – the Congress Scientific Committee is developing a program that will highlight the contributions that forest science is making to address the significant environmental, social and economic challenges facing our world. The Congress program will reflect the forest science community's diverse contributions across the full range of natural and social science disciplines, with special emphasis on key issues and research areas identified in IUFRO's 2010-2014 Strategy. Session proposals will be accepted that address one or more of the following Congress themes: - Forests for People - Forest Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services - Forests and Climate Change - Forest and Water Interactions - Forest Biomass and Bioenergy - Forests and Forest Products for a Greener Future - Forest Health in a Changing World Who may submit a session proposal? All who share an interest in the future of forests and forest science session are invited to submit session proposals. We encourage proposals that involve collaboration between two or more IUFRO Divisions or Task Forces and/or with organizations not formally associated with IUFRO, and from university students at all levels. We strongly recommend IUFRO officeholders and others actively involved in IUFRO Research Groups, Working Parties, and Task Forces communicate with their respective Division representatives on the CSC (or Task Force coordinators) before submitting proposals – this will greatly facilitate broader involvement of IUFRO divisional units and Task Forces in the scientific program and avoid overlaps among sessions. Session proposals from non-IUFRO member organizations are encouraged although preference will be given to those that are prepared jointly with IUFRO Divisional units and Task Forces (see http://www.iufro.org/science/ for more information) – if assistance is needed to identify appropriate partners within IUFRO, please contact the CSC Chair or other members of the CSC. Preparing and submitting a session proposal. Proposals should be submitted between January and April, 2013, online at www.iufro2014.com using the Session Proposal Form. Proposals will not be accepted after April 30th. In addition to providing basic information on session organizer(s), session title, alignment with Congress themes, and a short abstract of the session proposal, those submitting proposals should submit (online) a more complete proposal (as a Word document) that describes the session objectives and content in relation to Congress theme(s), proposed session format (i.e., presentation of individual papers and/or posters, moderated panel discussion, or other forms of presentation) and lists proposed speakers (if known), their organizational affiliations and tentative titles of their presentations. Proposed sessions should be organized to be 2-2½ hours in length. For sessions involving oral presentations, we recommend that each speaker be given a minimum of 15 minutes for his/her presentation. Please note that the abstract submission process will be open to all, so session organizers may need to include papers or posters that were not originally proposed for their sessions. Please be aware of this possibility and the need for flexibility in designing your session. In the event that the number of accepted abstracts for a particular session exceeds the number that can be accommodated in a single session, organizers may be given an additional session slot in the Congress program. Criteria for selection. Session proposals will be reviewed and evaluated by members of the Congress Scientific Committee with primary consideration given to their scientific quality and relevance to the Congress themes. Other factors that will be considered are: the involvement of two or more IUFRO units (Divisions, Task Forces, Research Groups and Working Parties) and/or non-IUFRO organizations; [geographic and gender] diversity of proposed session speakers/presenters; and the involvement of students and young scientists. Proposals will be evaluated as they are received, so we strongly encourage submissions well in advance of the April 30th deadline. Acceptance decisions will be made no later than June 30th, 2013. An open Call for Abstracts will be issued in July, with online abstract submission until October 15th and acceptance decisions until November 30th (2013). Responsibilities of session organizers. Session organizers of accepted proposals are expected to communicate with prospective presenters regarding submission of abstracts (online, from late July to mid-October 2013), and will be asked to review abstracts submitted for their sessions during the abstract review period (i.e., in late October to late November 2013). Session organizers may be asked to assist the CSC in the editing of accepted abstracts. They will also be responsible for moderating sessions (or assigning session moderation responsibilities) and are encouraged to pursue publication options for papers presented in their sessions. Abstracts of papers and posters presented during the Congress will be published in a special volume of The International Forestry Review, as was done for the 2010 Congress in Seoul, Republic of Korea. As formal Congress proceedings with full papers will not be published, session organizers should explore alternative publication options (books, special issues of journals, etc.) for their sessions. We look forward to hearing from you and for your active participation in the design of an excellent scientific program for the 2014 IUFRO Congress in Salt Lake City. Professor in Forest Products with a special competence in Wood and Adhesive Chemistry

Colleagues, Linnæus University, School of Technology in the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering is seeking a Professor in Forest Products with a special competence in Wood and Adhesive Chemistry. The professor shall have a sound knowledge of the chemical structure and properties of wood, and how these can properties be utilised in industrial processes. The professor shall also have a sound knowledge of how wood cooperates with other materials, which can provide a basis for the development of in first hand adhesive systems, but also other system such as paints, wood protection systems and the dimensional stabilisation of wood. A knowledge of the manufacture of board materials and all other cellulose-based fibre products is also included. Noted the deadline extended to 15 January 2013. The conference organisers are also offering full access to the parallel conference “2013 National Outdoor Recreation Conference” which “Forests for People” participants are welcome to join for free. Cheers, Andrew Wong Coordinator, IUFRO D5 (Forest Products) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The 2nd IUFRO Conference on Forests for People May 19-23, 2013, Traverse City, Michigan USA The deadline for research abstract submittal has been extended to January 15, 2013 The aim of this conference by the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) is to build a systematic body of knowledge about “forests for people” and its various facets, including possible future trends and challenges. The conference theme, “A Growing Interdisciplinary Task,” aims to integrate knowledge from various disciplines inside and outside of forestry such as recreation, sociology, global dynamics, environmental management, education, urban planning and many others. The main sub-themes of FFP are: · Livelihoods — issues of agro-forestry, food security, fuels, poverty alleviation, and human dislocation · Health, Recreation and Tourism — issues of human health, recreation, and nature-based tourism · Urban and Rural Landscapes — issues of ecosystem services, economic benefit and development, spaces and places for living, and urban forestry · Culture and Education — issues of perceptions of forests, spiritual character, education, historical tradition and practice, communication and governance We are pleased to offer full access to the parallel conference “2013 National Outdoor Recreation Conference” which “Forests for People” participants are welcome to join for free. Presentations Research presentations are 20 minutes in length (15 minute presentation with 5 minutes for questions). Management sessions are 1.5 hours in length with 2-4 presenters. Session organizers may customize the format of the session to help ensure a quality learning experience. The meeting rooms will provide a laptop computer, digital projector, screen, lectern, and audio system (in the larger rooms). Special requests for eraser boards, dissolve units, video equipment and other specialized equipment will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Please include any special requests in your proposal. Following the conference, the session presentations and handouts will be posted on the host websites, unless you request otherwise. Poster Sessions Participants are also invited to submit an abstract for a poster presentation. Posters will be on display during the conference, with special attention given at the Opening Reception when attendees will have a chance to visit and ask questions. Tripods will be provided and placed in the large meeting room where breaks will be taken, helping to ensure opportunities for interaction. Abstracts People may submit several abstracts for either presentations and/or posters. One submission is required for each proposed presentation and/or poster session. It is important that each abstract includes all the required information. Response to Abstract Submissions All proposals will be peer reviewed and selected on the basis of relevance and appropriateness for this conference. Because of the limited number of program times available, not all proposals are guaranteed a place in the schedule. All participants submitting an abstract will be notified as to acceptance or rejection by February 1, 2013.
