worked as a natural resources and agriculture sector consultant in 35
countries for USAID, World Bank, Ford Foundation, Asian Development Bank,

IIE, and PACT. He holds a degree from Massachusetts Institute of
Technology in electrical engineering, as well as a PhD from Yale University
in biology.
Gorilla Bond is a company involved in sustainable and socially responsible
bamboo solutions for Africa.
As Executive Director, I look forward to Paul's assistance on global
environmental issues involving bamboo and having yet another intelligent

World Bamboo Day 2011 - just a month away! [

September 18 is World Bamboo Day, as declared in 2009 by the government of
Thailand during the 8th World Bamboo Congress held in Bangkok. Modelled
after Earth Day (see its history [
<http://www.earthday.org/earth-day-history-movement%5D>
http://www.earthday.org/earth-day-history-movement]), World Bamboo Day is an
opportunity to promote bamboo in all its glories and take action to see that
bamboo garners attention as an agent to help the environment, promote
community development, and promote the development of sustainable bamboo
plantations for modern applications in a world of diminishing forests and
changing climate.
How will you celebrate this day of bamboo?
Please visit our website and see planned events for this year, and let us
hear from you about your own event! [ <http://www.worldbambooday.org/>

Call for Papers, 9th WBC
Dear colleagues,
As you may know, from April 10-13, 2012 the University of Antwerp will host
the 9th World Bamboo Congress. All information can be found on our website:
http://www.worldbamboocongress.org]
More information on background, organising and scientific committees is at :
http://www.worldbamboocongress.org/about]
In Antwerp the focus will be on science, for a very specific reason: The
potential of bamboo in forestry and ecosystems or as raw material remains
high, but sound scientific methods and data are needed to back up strategies
and policies.
We hereby invite you to submit your research paper : the deadline for
submission is November 1, 2011. All necessary information is provided at
<http://www.worldbamboocongress.org/call>

We look forward to many interesting and valuable contributions.
Yours truly,
Walter Liese and Johan Gielis, on behalf of the scientific committee.
Geert Potters and Frances Schutte, on behalf of the organizing committee

9th World Bamboo Congress : Belgium, 10 - 13 April 2012
Please see full details on the Congress website: [

At the last WBC, held in Bangkok, 2009, many of the WBO members were present
and took part in the event as speakers, session chairs, committee members or
happy attendees. I personally invite each and every one of you to please
consider joining us in Antwerp next April for this very important event.
Each of you has something very useful and something wonderfully interesting
to share with the many participants who will be coming from around the
world. Please consider submitting a paper, volunteering on a committee, or
simply coming to Belgium to learn about the newest in bamboo science and
technologies. Please let me hear from you, and if you can't be with us in
Belgium, send us news of your work in bamboo and we'll share it on our
website.
My best regards and continued thanks,
Susanne
