Papers, posters and computer demonstrations are welcomed within the theme of
the conference. Participants are invited to contribute problems and ideas as
well as potential solutions. Extended abstracts (max. one printed page,
including one figure or illustration) for all invited speakers, voluntary
presentations, posters and demonstrations will be available in printed
proceedings format at the start of the conference.
30 April 2009 Last date for submission of abstracts is 30 April 2009.
Abstracts should be prepared according to the guidelines presented on the
conference web-site.
15 May 2009 Notification of acceptance will be issued by 15 May 2009.
15 June 2009 Final, extended abstracts, including specific results, should
be received no later than 15 June 2009.

The 10th International Conference on Wood & Biofiber Plastic Composites
will be held on May 11-12, 2009 at the Monona Terrace Convention &
Community Center, Madison, Wisconsin, USA. This conference is co-sponsored
by IUFRO Research Group 5.05 Wood and Lignocellulosic Composites of IUFRO
Division 5--Forest Products.
The International Cellulose Nanocomposites Symposium will be held on the

Research Assistantship is available at the School of Forest Resources of the
University of Maine. This interdisciplinary research investigates the
economic, social and environmental impacts of harnessing the forest
resources as a source of bio-fuels, bio-chemicals, bio-plastics, and
bio-materials. This research involves close collaboration with forest
resource based industries, government agencies, and the other departments at

Qualifications:
Applicants can have any academic background (particularly, natural science,
forestry, agriculture or chemical or environmental engineering or economics,
industrial and systems engineering ). The applicant should be interested to
pursue interdisciplinary research/graduate studies at masters or PhD level
in the area of environmental life cycle assessment (LCA) and industrial
ecology of forest bio-products (e.g. bio-fuels, bio-chemicals). A background
in LCA, materials flow analysis (MFA) or industrial ecology is not required,
but applicant should be willing to learn the fundamental concepts/principles
to pursue this challenging research in sustainability science.
Applicant should have or develop good analytical and, database skills,
knowledge of basic statistics and probability and be willing to learn new
software packages (e.g. SIMAPRO). It is also desirable that he/she has taken
or will take a course in systems dynamics, modeling and simulation.
If you are an international student, in addition to Graduate Record
Examination (GRE) results, you should also have TOEFL (Test of English as
Foreign Language) results for admission purposes. Application due date:

IUFRO informs about forthcoming first CPF global assessment report on the
adaptation of forests and forest-dependent people to climate change

On 5 December 2008, during the side event of the Collaborative Partnership
on Forests (CPF), Alexander Buck from IUFRO will report on the progress of
the first CPF global assessment report on the adaptation of forests and
forest-dependent people to climate change.
The peer-reviewed report will be launched at UNFF 8 in April 2009. It has
been prepared by the first CPF Global Forest Expert Panel (GFEP), which is
led and coordinated by IUFRO. The Panel has gathered input from about 100
renowned scientists from a broad range of disciplines.
This will be the most comprehensive assessment to date of existing
scientific knowledge about forest adaptation. It will provide decision
makers with an objective source of science-based information on the
ecological, social and economic impacts of climate change on forests and
people, and present forest management and policy options for adaptation.
