The world today is undergoing rapid socio-economic and technological changes, which have implications for the forest and environment sector, in turn affecting the ecological, economic and social well being of the people. The forestry sector must keep pace and adapt to these changes. The "Commonwealth" refers to the Commonwealth of Nations, an association of 53 sovereign nations that works together to achieve international goals such as Peace, Democracy and Consensus-building, Law, Human Rights and Development, Environmentally Sustainable Economic Development with greater trust and mutual understanding. Environment and forests are global resources and need to be focused upon by the global fraternity due to the pressures they are under as a result of the alarming growth in the human population, pressures that are being exacerbated by climate and environmental change. The year 2017 will be a key occasion for forestry professionals, academicians and all those interested in and associated with forestry sector in the Commonwealth; they will gather and share their experiences with a view to learn and develop a vision for the future that will involve inclusive and sustainable growth and development. The commonwealth forestry conferences have been held since 1920, when the first (Empire) Forestry Conference was held in London. Since then, the conferences have been held regularly to discuss various aspects of management of forests and focus the action on the changing priorities of the forestry sector.
The 19th Commonwealth Forestry Conference is scheduled to be held at Forest Research Institute, Dehradun, India from 3rd to 7th April, 2017. The ICFRE and FRI will be the Focal point of the conference, with support from MOEF & CC, Government of India and Commonwealth Forestry Association. The major theme of the conference will be: "Forests for Prosperity and Posterity"
Abstract submission
Abstract submission will be open until 7 November 2016, at <http://www.cfc2017.in/call-for-papers/> http://www.cfc2017.in/call-for-papers/, containing detailed instructions on how to proceed. The sub-themes are:
1. Biodiversity conservation and management
2. Livelihood and economic security from forests
3. Diversification, multiple use and sustainable harvest
4. Good governance in forestry
5. Forests and climate change
6. Forest and water
The CFC-2017 Secretariat is looking forward to receiving your abstracts!

The 2017 IUFRO All-Division 5 (Forest Products) Conference will be held in Vancouver, Canada from June 12th to 16th, 2017. The Conference is organized jointly by IUFRO Division 5, the Faculty of Forestry at the University of British Columbia, FPInnovations, and the Society of Wood Science and Technology. In recognition of the pressing global need for the forest sector to be a leader in sustainability, diversification, and innovation, the theme of the 2017 IUFRO Division 5 Conference is: Forest Sector Innovations for a Greener Future.
We are organizing a technical session on “ <http://www.iufrodiv5-2017.ca/submissions/technical-special-sessions/#evolut…> Evolution of the Global Wood-based BioEnergy Sector”, and are currently soliciting presenters. If you are interested in submitting a presentation or poster on this topic, the Call for Abstracts is now open (Deadline October 31, 2016)!
The conference brochure is attached and more information about the conference – and submitting abstracts - can be found here : <http://www.iufrodiv5-2017.ca/> www.IUFROdiv5-2017.ca.
About the Session
Title: <http://www.iufrodiv5-2017.ca/submissions/technical-special-sessions/#evolut…> Evolution of the Global Wood-based BioEnergy Sector
Organizer: <mailto:vlosky@lsu.edu> Dr. Richard Vlosky (Louisiana State University Agricultural Center, USA)
Co-organizer: <mailto:chris.gaston@ubc.ca> Dr. Chris Gaston (University of British Columbia, Canada), <mailto:aguilarf@missouri.edu> Dr. Francisco X. Aguilar (University of Missouri, USA)
Over the past 15 years, the global wood-based BioEnergy sector has dramatically evolved into what is now a major part of international forestry. Billions of dollars in investments have been made to research, create and commercialize new energy sources, fuels, chemicals, and value-added co-products. This session will examine the structural, policy, and business infrastructures of this nascent global sector. In addition, business and governmental leaders will share experiences, opportunities, and challenges in this ever-changing arena.

Chora Connection invites you to the Go2WOOD Conclave on 27 October 2016 at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts.
The conclave is a unique all-day event hosted by Chora Connection in collaboration with KADK promoting the sustainable use of wood in Denmark. The purpose of the day is to exhibit quality knowledge for how society, companies and consumers as well, can benefit on multiple parameters from the integration of sustainable wood in the value chain of danish design, production and construction.
This international event is the culmination of a series of workshops held throughout the past year to catalyse actions to raise awareness and help develop methods for a more robust use of one of the most abundant biomaterials: WOOD. The Go2WOOD conclave’s goal is to promote Denmark as a sustainable leader in construction and wood production.
The program is inspired by the FOREST - a place for rich bio-diversity and recreation but also a vital production resource of sustainable timber - the workhorse of carbon fixing.
Immediate Past President Professor Niels Elers Koch will be one of the keynote speakers at this event.
Details are available in the attached programme. For registration, please visit: https://greenticket.dk/conclave16.

Dear all,
I would like to put your attention to Session 31 “Quality Assessments along the wood supply chain for optimal use of the forest resource” which is joinedly organised by colleagues from Division 5 and Division 3. At the moment is the session listed under Div 3 where you can find more information.
Session: “Quality Assessments along the wood supply chain for optimal use of the forest resource”
The present forest resource is limited in some parts of the world and a shortage of wood and woody biomass is identified as an obstacle for the developing bio-economy worldwide. Supply chain optimization is important for the environmental and economical production of wood based forest products. A key requirement for this optimization is that the available and future forest resources must be assigned to their best and most appropriate uses as early as possible in the forestry wood chain. The development of modern methods in remote sensing, stem form assessments and non-destructive testing of the wood can help facilitate such decision making at all stages along the wood-supply chain: pre harvest, in the forest, at road side and at the mill. Integrating the information gathered at all stages along the chain still presents some challenges.
This session seeks to promote discussion around the development and implementation of non-destructive tools and remote sensing for early characterization of the forest resource prior to primary processing. It will include topics such as new technological and modeling approaches to characterize the resource, new concepts for data management and integration throughout the supply chain and decision making based on tree and wood properties throughout the supply chain.
As we feel that the topic is really touching both “Forest products” and “Forest Operations, management and supply-chain” issues we warmly invite you to consider a contribution to the session. The Call for Abstracts is now open and will remain open until November 30th, 2016. Please feel free to forwards this email to colleagues who also might be interested in the topic.
Best wishes, Franka Brüchert
