From the Executive Director
Here we are in a new year! On behalf of the World Bamboo Organization, thank you for your
interest in bamboo and your commitment to our global community. Together we are
stronger—no single culm can stand alone without its rhizomes and grove. We're happy
you are here to read about our initiatives in this first part of 2026.
Ambassador Program Expansion
We're expanding our Ambassador [
https://www.worldbamboo.net/ambassadors]program this
year. Thank you for your nominations! We'll announce our selections on April 1st. The
enthusiasm and competence we see in bamboo projects worldwide continues to inspire
us—interest in bamboo is clearly growing.
Strengthening Our Scientific Foundation
WBO has always relied on rigorous science to demonstrate bamboo's global potential. At
a time when environmental protections are under threat and climate action faces political
headwinds, our work matters more than ever. WBO Ambassador Dr. Johan Gielis
[
https://www.worldbamboo.net/team-2/johan-gielis-] and our Science Committee are
developing an open-access repository of validated, curated bamboo research. Our goal:
position WBO as the definitive authority on evidence-based bamboo science.
Why This Matters Now
In times like these, an inclusive, independent, global network dedicated to the bamboo
community becomes vital. We're proud of our grassroots origins and three decades of
progress. We remain convinced that bamboo offers climate-smart, nature-based solutions to
build community resilience, strengthen economies worldwide, green the planet, and ensure
species survival through robust ecosystems.
Your support is vital to our success
Thank you for being here. We are here for you. We are grateful to our Supporting Partners
and Corporate Sponsors [

volunteer-run non-profit organization!
May you stay forever #bamboostrong!

World Bamboo Certified Training at Orangutan Haven
Bamboo Unboxed Workshop | April 6–11, 2026
The Bamboo Unboxed Workshop, officially recognized now as a World Bamboo Certified
Training, will take place at Orangutan Haven (OUH) [
https://orangutanhaven.com/] in North
Sumatra—an internationally recognized sanctuary for rescued orangutans and a hub for
ecological education.
This six-day intensive program focuses on bamboo as a primary construction material and
structural system, guiding participants through the full lifecycle of bamboo construction,
from material selection and treatment to joinery, geometry, and collaborative assembly.
The workshop integrates material intelligence, structural logic, and hands-on building
within a living ecological context where architecture, landscape, and conservation
intersect.
The program is organized by Giant Grass [
https://www.giantgrass.com/] and Orangutan
Haven [
https://orangutanhaven.com/] with support from Ecolodge Bukit Lawang
[
https://bukitlawang.ecolodges.id/] and is facilitated by an international team of bamboo
master builders, architects, and conservation experts. The workshop is designed for
professionals and students seeking deep technical understanding and regenerative design
practice aligned with global sustainability standards.
Spaces are limited. Early registration is strongly recommended.
