Dear D5 officers,
Here is what we have waiting for - opportunities to propose technical
sessions. There is a need to collaborate across Research units and
Divisions (I know this can be difficult, not knowing what the others are
doing) since IUFRO does not encourage sessions proposed by a single RG or
WP alone. Session proposals must fall under the chosen themes (below). The
rest of the information are self explanatory. Do note the submission
deadline is before 30 April 2013.
Look forward to an Active D5 representation at the IUFRO 2014 World
congress for sure.

Dear IUFRO Officeholder, dear Colleagues,
The Congress Scientific Committee invites
submission of session proposals for the
2014 IUFRO Congress. In keeping with the
spirit of the Congress title – Sustaining
Forests, Sustaining People: The Role of
Research – the Congress Scientific
Committee is developing a program that
will highlight the contributions that
forest science is making to address the
significant environmental, social and
economic challenges facing our world. The
Congress program will reflect the forest
science community's diverse contributions
across the full range of natural and
social science disciplines, with special
emphasis on key issues and research areas
identified in IUFRO's 2010-2014 Strategy.
Session proposals will be accepted that
address one or more of the following
Congress themes:
- Forests for People
- Forest Biodiversity and Ecosystem
Services
- Forests and Climate Change
- Forest and Water Interactions
- Forest Biomass and Bioenergy
- Forests and Forest Products for a
Greener Future
- Forest Health in a Changing World
Who may submit a session proposal?
All who share an interest in the future of
forests and forest science session are
invited to submit session proposals. We
encourage proposals that involve
collaboration between two or more IUFRO
Divisions or Task Forces and/or with
organizations not formally associated with
IUFRO, and from university students at all
levels. We strongly recommend IUFRO
officeholders and others actively involved
in IUFRO Research Groups, Working Parties,
and Task Forces communicate with their
respective Division representatives on the
CSC (or Task Force coordinators) before
submitting proposals – this will greatly
facilitate broader involvement of IUFRO
divisional units and Task Forces in the
scientific program and avoid overlaps
among sessions.
Session proposals from non-IUFRO member
organizations are encouraged although
preference will be given to those that are
prepared jointly with IUFRO Divisional
units and Task Forces (see
http://www.iufro.org/science/ for more
information) – if assistance is needed to
identify appropriate partners within
IUFRO, please contact the CSC Chair or
other members of the CSC.
Preparing and submitting a session
proposal.
Proposals should be submitted between
January and April, 2013, online at
www.iufro2014.com using the Session
Proposal Form. Proposals will not be
accepted after April 30th.
In addition to providing basic information
on session organizer(s), session title,
alignment with Congress themes, and a
short abstract of the session proposal,
those submitting proposals should submit
(online) a more complete proposal (as a
Word document) that describes the session
objectives and content in relation to
Congress theme(s), proposed session format
(i.e., presentation of individual papers
and/or posters, moderated panel
discussion, or other forms of
presentation) and lists proposed speakers
(if known), their organizational
affiliations and tentative titles of their
presentations. Proposed sessions should be
organized to be 2-2½ hours in length. For
sessions involving oral presentations, we
recommend that each speaker be given a
minimum of 15 minutes for his/her
presentation.
Please note that the abstract submission
process will be open to all, so session
organizers may need to include papers or
posters that were not originally proposed
for their sessions. Please be aware of
this possibility and the need for
flexibility in designing your session. In
the event that the number of accepted
abstracts for a particular session exceeds
the number that can be accommodated in a
single session, organizers may be given an
additional session slot in the Congress
program.
Criteria for selection.
Session proposals will be reviewed and
evaluated by members of the Congress
Scientific Committee with primary
consideration given to their scientific
quality and relevance to the Congress
themes. Other factors that will be
considered are: the involvement of two or
more IUFRO units (Divisions, Task Forces,
Research Groups and Working Parties)
and/or non-IUFRO organizations;
[geographic and gender] diversity of
proposed session speakers/presenters; and
the involvement of students and young
scientists. Proposals will be evaluated as
they are received, so we strongly
encourage submissions well in advance of
the April 30th deadline.
Acceptance decisions will be made no later
than June 30th, 2013. An open Call for
Abstracts will be issued in July, with
online abstract submission until October
15th and acceptance decisions until
November 30th (2013).
Responsibilities of session organizers.
Session organizers of accepted proposals
are expected to communicate with
prospective presenters regarding
submission of abstracts (online, from late
July to mid-October 2013), and will be
asked to review abstracts submitted for
their sessions during the abstract review
period (i.e., in late October to late
November 2013). Session organizers may be
asked to assist the CSC in the editing of
accepted abstracts. They will also be
responsible for moderating sessions (or
assigning session moderation
responsibilities) and are encouraged to
pursue publication options for papers
presented in their sessions.
Abstracts of papers and posters presented
during the Congress will be published in a
special volume of The International
Forestry Review, as was done for the 2010
Congress in Seoul, Republic of Korea. As
formal Congress proceedings with full
papers will not be published, session
organizers should explore alternative
publication options (books, special issues
of journals, etc.) for their sessions.

Professor in Forest Products with a special competence in Wood and Adhesive Chemistry

Colleagues,
Linnæus University, School of Technology in the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering is seeking a Professor in Forest Products with a special competence in Wood and Adhesive Chemistry.
The professor shall have a sound knowledge of the chemical structure and properties of wood, and how these can properties be utilised in industrial processes. The professor shall also have a sound knowledge of how wood cooperates with other materials, which can provide a basis for the development of in first hand adhesive systems, but also other system such as paints, wood protection systems and the dimensional stabilisation of wood. A knowledge of the manufacture of board materials and all other cellulose-based fibre products is also included. The pulp and paper industries have a lower merit value than other wood chemical industries.

Dear D5 officers,
Please see the announcement for the 2nd IUFRO conference on Forests for
People. This is a follow up to my recent email on this conference. Noted
the deadline extended to 15 January 2013. The conference organisers are
also offering full access to the parallel conference “2013 National Outdoor
Recreation Conference” which “Forests for People” participants are welcome
to join for free.
Hopefully we could have members of IUFRO D5, at least from North America or
neighbouring regions attending the meeting located in Michigan. Full

The 2nd IUFRO Conference on Forests for People
May 19-23, 2013, Traverse City, Michigan USA
The deadline for research abstract submittal has been extended to January
15, 2013
The aim of this conference by the International Union of Forest Research
Organizations (IUFRO) is to build a systematic body of knowledge about
“forests for people” and its various facets, including possible future
trends and challenges. The conference theme, “A Growing Interdisciplinary
Task,” aims to integrate knowledge from various disciplines inside and
outside of forestry such as recreation, sociology, global dynamics,
environmental management, education, urban planning and many others.
The main sub-themes of FFP are:
· Livelihoods — issues of agro-forestry, food security, fuels, poverty
alleviation, and human dislocation
· Health, Recreation and Tourism — issues of human health, recreation,
and nature-based tourism
· Urban and Rural Landscapes — issues of ecosystem services, economic
benefit and development, spaces and places for living, and urban
forestry
· Culture and Education — issues of perceptions of forests, spiritual
character, education, historical tradition and practice,
communication and governance
We are pleased to offer full access to the parallel conference “2013
National Outdoor Recreation Conference” which “Forests for People”
participants are welcome to join for free.
Presentations
Research presentations are 20 minutes in length (15 minute presentation
with 5 minutes for questions). Management sessions are 1.5 hours in length
with 2-4 presenters. Session organizers may customize the format of the
session to help ensure a quality learning experience. The meeting rooms
will provide a laptop computer, digital projector, screen, lectern, and
audio system (in the larger rooms). Special requests for eraser boards,
dissolve units, video equipment and other specialized equipment will be
evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Please include any special requests in
your proposal. Following the conference, the session presentations and
handouts will be posted on the host websites, unless you request otherwise.
Poster Sessions
Participants are also invited to submit an abstract for a poster
presentation. Posters will be on display during the conference, with
special attention given at the Opening Reception when attendees will have a
chance to visit and ask questions. Tripods will be provided and placed in
the large meeting room where breaks will be taken, helping to ensure
opportunities for interaction.
Abstracts
People may submit several abstracts for either presentations and/or
posters. One submission is required for each proposed presentation and/or
poster session. It is important that each abstract includes all the
required information.
Response to Abstract Submissions
All proposals will be peer reviewed and selected on the basis of relevance
and appropriateness for this conference. Because of the limited number of
program times available, not all proposals are guaranteed a place in the
schedule. All participants submitting an abstract will be notified as to
acceptance or rejection by February 1, 2013.

Conference Information
Conference information will be posted and updated regularly at

Force on "Forests for People", hoping that IUFRO members from the fields

This is the second announcement of the 9th edition of the International Conference “Wood Science and Engineering in the Third Millennium” – ICWSE 2013, which will be organized by the Transilvania University of Brasov - Faculty of Wood Engineering in Brasov, Romania, between 07 – 09 November 2013.
All accepted papers will be published in a special edition of PRO LIGNO - scientific journal in the field of wood engineering, indexed by CABI, EBSCO and DOAJ (http://www.proligno.ro/en).

I've been in need of an assistant here in the office of World Bamboo...someone who can focus on our mission to bring together progressive corporations focused on doing business in bamboo. We have tailored the new position of Director of Corporate Sponsorships, primarily because a very capable and very willing person said they wanted to help! Meet Sonja Sheasley!
Sonja is perfect for this position as she knows first-hand the trials and tribulations of owning and managing a successful business dealing in bamboo products. That is no easy feat during the past few years of financial crisis, and I feel very fortunate to have someone by my side as talented, dedicated and passionate as Sonja.

Clean and green: Saving the earth one baby bum at a time

<It's been a swift ascent for Mashpee-based [Massachusetts USA] natural products company Bum Boosa, which launched in March 2009 and has garnered local and international attention since. President Sonja Sheasley founded the company that produces bamboo-based baby wipes with lavender and sweet orange essential oils, organic aloe vera, vitamin E and calendula extract, which is an alternative to the majority of tree pulp and plastic-based baby wipes with harsh chemical preservatives on the market today.
"I think first and foremost for my particular product, being a consumer was the most important teacher or guide for me, because I wanted to bring a product to market that I didn't see. I'm obviously in a demographic – my age, my gender – so I really relied on my instinct," says Sheasley, 41, who has two school-age children. The name of her company, Bum Boosa, is a play on the Latin name for a common type of bamboo, Bambusa.The baby wipes hit the market in July 2009. Sheasley added a second product – a diaper rash ointment with bamboo powder – by the end of 2009. Then, she brought to market a 100 per- cent bamboo-based toilet paper in 2010.
The company has since received recognition from Canada's 2010 Green Parents' List Award for Best New Baby Skin Care, was nominated for a 2012 Cribsie Award, was one of the three winners of the Positively Different Emerging Business Partnership sponsored by Cooperative Bank of Cape Cod and Cape Cod Young Professionals and was selected to give a business pitch to investors at Expo East in Baltimore last month.
At the heart of Bum Boosa's mission is to create alternative forms of everyday products that are less harsh on the body and the environ- ment. On the horizon are more products such as diapers, paper towels and make-up remover wipes she would like to add to the company's list of products.
How it began
Sheasley was a young mother with two babies, married to the captain of a large research vessel at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. "It definitely wasn't easy," she says. "My husband is out at sea. I have these two babies, young children. Both of them are boys [with] high energy. Both were difficult babies. I needed something for me."
To alleviate stress and to create a more peaceful atmosphere at home, she turned to diffusing essential oils. She studied aromatherapy at the Sandwich Village Herb Shop and learned how to make soap, lotion and essential oils from herbs.
"I just started trying to make everything I could and it became an obsession. I would go into CVS, for example, and try to replicate some products I liked on the shelf in a natural way in my kitchen," she says. She sold some of her homemade soaps and lotions at local farmers markets under her brand name of Aroma Waves and began to strategize about creating a company.
"It was actually important talking directly to customers at farmers markets. I think I learned a lot talking to customers, seeing what people were looking for and interested in. Honestly, many people asked me about baby products [and] baby wipes," she says.
Then she began to research, which is a part of the process she says she's good at and enjoys. As she looked for an eco-friendly, sustainable material that would work as a baby wipe, bamboo textiles for t-shirts to bed sheets were the new rage. The problem was she could not find anyone in the U.S. making a non-woven fiber out of bamboo pulp in 2008. So she began emailing manufacturers in China, where most of the bamboo textiles were being produced. Three manufacturers responded. She began to work with one. At the same time, she contacted an organic chemist in China who worked with her to develop the formula.
"It was not easy to come up with the formula because there are some harsh chemical preservatives in baby wipes for a reason: to have a typical two-year shelf life or longer. So it was sort of going out on the limb to make a formulation that would make it to the two-year shelf life [and one] that I was happy with," she says.
She worked swiftly from March to July 2009, when the product hit the market. As sales began to grow, a few U.S. manufacturers started to call her. She eventually switched to a manufacturer in Long Island, N.Y., for the bamboo baby wipes.
Once she switched to a U.S. manufacturer at the end of last year, sales grew substantially from 3,000 packages to 15,000 packages of baby wipes sold per quarter. Sheasley attributes this to the fact that her customers are conscientious consumers looking for products that are eco- friendly, which includes a low carbon footprint.
Know your customer
Bum Boosa invests some of its resources into obtaining third-party certification, which Sheasley sees as a growing trend. In the age of "green washing," where many products and companies say they are environmentally friendly but are not, she believes the certification adds legitimacy to her company and products.
"For some of the savvy customers who are looking for products that walk the talk, those seals of approval matter," she says. The certi- fication seals are a way to communicate to a customer about the ingredients in a product and a company's values.
Bum Boosa's baby wipes are USDA bio- approved certified. And the company underwent B Corporation certification, which des- ignates businesses that "meet comprehensive and transparent social and environmental performance standards," according to the B Corporation website.
"I do think [third-party certification] is a tool for the consumer to rule out what's legitimate and what's not. The only problem is those certifications come at a high price," Sheasley says. The certifications can cost a company between $500 to a few thousand dollars per year.
A warehouse in Boston stores and ships Bum Boosa's inventory. Its products can be found at Big Y World Markets in Western Massachusetts and Connecticut as well as independent natural food stores and baby boutiques through- out the East Coast. A large portion of sales are conducted through online stores such as Amazon, Drugstore.com, Ecomom.com, Abe's Marketplace and the Bum Boosa website.
Mommy bloggers have played a significant role in spreading the word about Bum Boosa's products online, Sheasley says. The baby wipes even caught Hollywood's eye as they were one of the gift bag items given at the baby shower of actress Tamera Mowry, who stars with her twin sister in the Style Network reality show, Tia & Tamera. Other celebrities in Bum Boosa's high-sale regions of New York and Los Angeles have been loyal customers, Sheasley says. Bum Boosa's baby wipes retail for $5.70 for a pack of 80 wipes on the company's website.
Bum Boosa's next steps include seeking additional capital to buy more inventory and to pursue more third-party certifications. Sheasley would also like to grow her home-based business and eventually travel to China to see the bamboo processing facilities. >

Mashpee startup Bum Boosa brings sustainable approach to baby-care and bathroom products

MASHPEE [Massachusetts USA] – Sonja Sheasley started her business at the bottom, quite literally. And now, she said, things are And now, she said, things are looking up.
Sheasley launched Bum Boosa, a bamboo-derived baby wipe and tissue company, in 2009. Since then, gross sales have totalled $300,000. "That's not a whole heck of a lot but for a small company, I'm still proud of it," she said. But Sheasley said the demand for bamboo-based products should only grow.
"I think bamboo is about to tidal wave," she said, pitching it as an alternative to tissue that uses plastics or pulp from trees. "We can't keep cutting trees down because that is not sustainable. We have a huge problem with plastics."
The company sells baby wipes, diaper rash ointment and 100 percent bamboo bathroom tissue. The baby wipes are made in New York, the ointment in Oregon and the bathroom tissue in China. The company doesn't sell enough bathroom tissue yet to satisfy order amounts required by U.S. suppliers, but Sheasley said the company wants to move production to the U.S. when her company's scope increases.
Sheasley took a class in 2006 on making natural products including insect repellents, lotions and lip balm started and selling them at farmer markets in 2007. She turned her attention to bamboo-based products and founded the company in 2009.
The items, marketed as sustainable and renewable, are sold online at bumboosa.com [http://www.bumboosa.com], Amazon.com and other sites and at small retailers throughout the United States. It has a small distributor in Canada and the Cayman Islands, and its products are also sold at a retail chain in Guatemala, Sheasley said.
Cape locations where the products are sold include Cape Cod Children's Museum in Falmouth, Cotuit Fresh Market and 'g' Green Design Center in Mashpee. Bobby Pellant, vice president of marketing and organizational development, said the company is looking to move soon into a new larger Cape office with warehouse space. It currently has a warehouse in Braintree, but the company, with a staff of three, wants to add more space.
Sheasley said getting contracts with retailers can be challenging. "There is a whole heck of a lot of competition out there anyway,"she said. "Sometimes I feel like it's like winning the lottery or getting a record deal."
But Sheasley said she expects demand for bamboo-based products will grow. "I think it has to catch on,"she said.

Dear member of the IUFRO network,
Dear friend of IUFRO,
The International Union of Forest Research
Organizations (IUFRO) and the Agriculture
Research and Higher Education Center
(CATIE) will jointly organize the Third
IUFRO Latin American Congress, to be held
in San José, Costa Rica from 12 to 15 June
2013. Partners in this event are the
Ibero-American Model Forest Network
(RIABM), FAO and several IUFRO member
organizations in the region.
The overall goal of the Congress is to
demonstrate how forest science is
impacting on livelihoods, environment and
sustainable development in Latin America
and the Caribbean Region. The Congress
will highlight research that puts relevant
information in the hands of decision
makers in the management and policy arenas
at national and regional levels.
The Congress organisers welcome all
interested parties to submit abstracts in
order to share and discuss research
results, new ideas, approaches to forest
and landscape management, experiences,
conceptual models and initiatives of
interest. The first call for submission of
abstracts is attached here. The deadline
for the submission of abstracts is 31
December 2012.
Official languages of the Congress will be
Spanish and English.
