Dear IUFRO Enlarged Board members,
As chair of the Congress Scientific Committee for the 125th anniversary
congress in Freiburg (19-22 September, 2017, http://iufro2017.com ), I'd
like to ask for your help in identifying keynote speakers. With the entire
program limited to three days, we plan to include three keynote
presentations with an hour allocated to each presentation including
questions.
Please let me know if you have any ideas of individuals who would make good
keynote speakers at the congress. We are looking for interesting,
knowledgeable and articulate speakers to address topics focusing on pure
science or science-policy themes. Given that we aim to encourage a
cross-disciplinary dialogue, our choice is not necessarily confined to
forest scientists: we may wish to invite other well-known individuals whom
scientists would be interested to hear. Thus, we are seeking speakers able
to inspire the audience to contemplate future directions in forest related
scientific disciplines relative to benefits for the global, or regional,
human population.
If you have idea(s) for keynote speakers, please send me an email, listing
the proposed speaker, a brief description of who they are and what subject
we might ask them to speak on. Once the CSC has developed a ranked list of
candidate keynote speakers, speakers will be invited by the IUFRO Executive
Director. Fortunately, there are funds allocated to cover the keynote
speakers' travel expenses and honoraria. I would like to receive all ideas
for keynote speakers by November 1. Thanks!
There are a few other things I'd like to mention about the Congress. First,
we anticipate the call for session proposals opening in January so you
might want to pass the word and start thinking about good session topics.
Second, we request that you keep the congress dates of 19-22 September,
2017 in mind when organizing other meetings. Some units will choose to meet
within the Congress and a few may organize satellite meetings just before
or after the Congress. But we request that other meetings not be organized
too close to these dates such that they conflict or compete for attendees.
This information should also be passed along to other officers in your
unit.
Thanks!!!
-Sandy

Helsinki, Finland, 14 - 16 October 2015
Dear Colleague,
The International Workshop on Forest Science Publishing will be the first activity of the new Working Party 9.01.06 of IUFRO. The initiative to establish the Working Party was made in the IUFRO World Congress in Salt Lake City, USA, in October 2014. The aim of the working party is to provide a forum for discussions, training, exchange of ideas, and development of editorial practices of journals dealing with forests, wood science, and related research. The Working Party and its first meeting are expected to be of special interest to the editors, editorial board members, and reviewers of peer-reviewed forest science journals for discussing timely issues on scientific publishing.
Based on feedback from Working Party members, the first workshop will emphasise peer-review and open access/open data issues yet contributions on any issue relevant to forest science publishing are welcome. The workshop will be composed of keynote talks, voluntary oral and poster presentations, and working groups. The working groups will formulate the activities of the Working Party until the next IUFRO World Congress in 2019.
The workshop website is www.metla.fi/fsp2015/index.htm and we invite you to submit abstracts and register through the website. The abstract submission will be open through 15 August 2015. Registration at the lower fee 380 € will be open through 9 September 2015. Thereafter the registration fee will increase to late level 460 €. Abstract submission will redirect you to the Open Journal System of the Finnish Society of Forest Science and the Natural Resources Institute Finland.
We ask you to read the Author Guidelines before submitting an abstract. Selected presentations will be published as full articles in a special issue of Silva Fennica (www.silvafennica.fi <http://www.silvafennica.fi/> ).

Betreff: Information about structural resistance of paulownia wood poles or posts
(...)
Do you have data on vertical and lateral structural resistance of paulownia poles or posts? By poles, I mean the round timber that grows directly on the plant, minus bark and branches.
My company plans to plant a large extension of ground with fast-growing trees to produce poles for applications in fencing, posts for powerlines and road illumination, construction and underground mining support. Most of these applications require non-serrated wood. That is why structural resistance values for the natural, round poles is sought. For some applications, we are considering certain processes to give the poles a longer useful life.
Alternatively, do you know somebody who can help me obtain such data?
Thanks in advance for your kind help.
Cordially yours,
Alberto Lobo-Guerrero S.

SAF is seeking Associate Editors for Forest Science (looking for international professionals – ideally from Latin America, Asia, and Africa). Please distribute the job description below to your applicable colleagues and contacts. Interested individuals can apply by sending a CV to Matt Walls (wallsm(a)safnet.org) There is no technical deadline, but I would encourage those interested to contact Matt as soon as possible.
Forest Science is a peer-reviewed journal publishing fundamental and applied research that explores all aspects of natural and social sciences as they apply to the function and management of the forested ecosystems of the world. Topics include silviculture, forest management, biometrics, economics, entomology & pathology, fire & fuels management, forest ecology, genetics & tree improvement, geospatial technologies, harvesting & utilization, landscape ecology, operations research, forest policy, physiology, recreation, social sciences, soils & hydrology, and wildlife management.
Forest Science currently has an editorial board comprised of 1 editor-in-chief, 3 applied research editors, and over 75 associate editors specializing in 18 areas of forestry and natural resources. Associate editors are responsible for assisting the editor in soliciting and developing articles of interest to forestry and natural resource researchers, academicians, and professionals, land managers, and policy makers; obtaining competent, timely reviews of assigned papers; and ensuring that the topics covered in Forest Science are balanced across discipline and employment categories.
In more specific terms, there are two broad areas of responsibility. The first is the peer-review process, coordinating the review of scientific and technical manuscripts in the associate editor’s field that have been submitted to Forest Science for publication—generally by distributing them to three authorities in the relevant subject areas. To fulfill this task, associate editors must know the different subfields within his or her specialty, and who practices in these subfields, so that papers can be sent to appropriate, knowledgeable reviewers. Associate editors will be notified by the web-based peer review system, Rapid Review, that a manuscript has been sent for review. It is expected that the associate editor acknowledge the assignment and assign reviewers within 4 business days of receipt. Reviewers are asked to accept or decline a review assignment within 2 business days and return completed reviews within 15 business days; associate editors are expected to ensure that assignments are acknowledged and comments are returned in a timely manner. Associate editors are asked to review reviewer comments and ensure that they are delivered in a professional and constructive manner, then synthesize these comments for the Forest Science editor. If the reviewers should disagree markedly, the associate editor should recommend which course to take (accept, ask for revision, or reject), and provide guidance that the authors can follow when preparing their revision.
The second area concerns the broader, less-defined role of consulting with and advising the Forest Science editor-in-chief in determining the content, direction, and focus of Forest Science, particularly in the specialties that he or she is responsible for. This would include being aware of new developments in the field, current controversies, and subjects that have not been adequately covered in Forest Science. Associate editors are encouraged to suggest possible topics and authors for appropriate articles.
