Division 5 and Division 7 have come together to develop technical session T2.6 for the upcoming IUFRO World Congress.
The title of the session is "Ensuring healthy trees for high quality wood products" and the objective of the session is to encourage collaboration between specialists in wood science and forest health.
Session description:
The production of high quality forest products is directly reliant upon desired raw material quality, i.e.
disease-free, clear wood harvested from healthy trees. When stems are infected by forest pathogens,
end products can be compromised by inferior wood, or the production cycle suffers unacceptably high
levels of waste creation. Infection of non-merchantable parts of the tree, such as foliage, result in
decreased overall productivity, leading to increased rotation length and an extended period between
planting and harvest. For these reasons, forest pathologists in Division 7 and wood scientists in
Division 5 have come together in this session to discuss how to optimize wood production for the future
forest products. Topics that will be discussed include canker pathogens of commercial species and
the assessment of defect, non-destructive testing to detect heart rot within commercially important
trees, the effects of foliar pathogens on growth and how to mitigate losses, assessment of degrade,
industrial processes to optimize production from inferior wood, and the planting of resilient forests
that can withstand the anticipated effects of climate change and stress. We have suggested a diverse
group of speakers from both divisions that are able to examine this issue from different perspectives
but are united in their desire to optimize forest productivity.

The IUFRO Division 5 meeting will be held 4-8 June 2023 in Cairns, Australia.

group of forest scientists of the Forests and Societies Research Unit of
Cirad, thought it would be an opportunity to publish an opinion column
to recall the urgent need to conserve and to safeguard the tropical
forests. This opinion column will be published in the French online
newspaper Reporterre which has about 1.5 million readers per month.

5th World Bamboo Workshop in Guatemala 26-29 October 2023
The theme: Building a climate-resilient future with bamboo
The coastal Caribbean community of Punta Brava on the shores of Lake Izabal, Guatemala has been chosen to host the 5th World Bamboo Workshop [https://www.worldbambooworkshop.com]from 26-29 October this year. This village is a living example of how bamboo can help develop and sustain climate-resilient communities.
The World Bamboo Organization, [https://www.worldbamboo.net] a United States NGO, has teamed up with the Guatemalan-based construction firm CASSA, led by Tono Aguilar. [https://cassa.com.gt/en/] CASSA has been working with Punta Brava since 2017, designing and building the village’s first ever high school, as well as beautiful climate-resilient bamboo houses with the help of its residents. Our combined efforts will teach the community how to grow and utilize bamboo to kickstart a local bamboo economy.
This World Bamboo Workshop will position Punta Brava [https://nona.net/features/map/placedetail.1815870/Punta%20Brava/] as a star example of how to create a climate-resilient future for all Central American communities. Inspired by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, a bamboo-based community will not only be of immense social value, but it will also create enormous environmental and financial capital for the region and the planet.

Both have mentored hundreds of students and transferred their passion and knowledge of working with bamboo and other locally sourced biomaterials to create functional yet brilliantly creative constructions.

Rest in peace, dear Professor Liese
Our beloved mentor, teacher, scholar, gentleman, and friend, Dr. Walter Liese [https://worldbamboo.net/about/bamboo-pioneers/walter-liese] has passed away, February 24, 2023.
To many of us, he was like a father or a grandfather, helping and critiquing us as we searched for knowledge in understanding bamboo. Fortunately he lived a very long life to the age of 97, working until the end, to understand all he could about bamboo, too. He was forever curious, and enjoyed learning what everyone around him was doing, writing, and thinking.
In 2009 he was honored by the World Bamboo Organization as one of our first World Bamboo Pioneers [https://worldbamboo.net/about/bamboo-pioneers/walter-liese] He was proud of that, as he was to give the first UEDA lecture at the 8th World Bamboo Congress in Bangkok.
