The IUFRO Division 5 meeting will be held 4-8 June 2023 in Cairns, Australia.
The weather is excellent at that time 18-20 C during the day and a lovely tropical environment. Come for the meeting and stay for a vacation on the Great Barrier Reef, one of nature's great wonders.
We still have places available, so join us to discuss the latest in wood products and non-wood forest products research around the world.
At the same time have input into the direction of Division 5 and the respective Research Groups.

Calling all those involved in forests, energy and livelihoods!
A new multi-agency issue brief highlights the links between these sectors and the leap forward that could come from them working more closely together.
Do you work in forests, energy or livelihoods? Are you searching for ways to boost progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals?
If so, take a moment to look at this new FAO/IUFRO/UNDP/UNFF issue brief, Forests, Energy and Livelihoods<https://www.un.org/esa/forests/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/ISSUE-BRIEF-Fores…>, which neatly sums up the current state of play in these sectors and why they are inextricably linked. It explains why managing forests more sustainably brings huge benefits to all those who depend on wood for fuel or forest products for a livelihood. And calls for more joined up thinking across these sectors to accelerate progress towards SDGs on poverty, hunger and clean energy.
Now is the time to put heads together on this!
Join the global event on April 4 (10.00-13.00 EDT) on UN Web TV<https://media.un.org/en/webtv> and follow the discussion about integrated approaches across these sectors ahead of the 2023 SDG Summit at the UN General Assembly high-level week in September.
Make sure you are part of this. Read the issue brief<https://www.un.org/esa/forests/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/ISSUE-BRIEF-Fores…> and join the event<https://www.un.org/esa/forests/events/unff18-bureau-event-forests-energy-li…>.
See you there!

March 2023 Welcome new Ambassadors, Guatemala workshop & more
5th World Bamboo Workshop in Guatemala 26-29 October 2023
The theme: Building a climate-resilient future with bamboo
The coastal Caribbean community of Punta Brava on the shores of Lake Izabal, Guatemala has been chosen to host the 5th World Bamboo Workshop [https://www.worldbambooworkshop.com]from 26-29 October this year. This village is a living example of how bamboo can help develop and sustain climate-resilient communities.
The World Bamboo Organization, [https://www.worldbamboo.net] a United States NGO, has teamed up with the Guatemalan-based construction firm CASSA, led by Tono Aguilar. [https://cassa.com.gt/en/] CASSA has been working with Punta Brava since 2017, designing and building the village’s first ever high school, as well as beautiful climate-resilient bamboo houses with the help of its residents. Our combined efforts will teach the community how to grow and utilize bamboo to kickstart a local bamboo economy.
This World Bamboo Workshop will position Punta Brava [https://nona.net/features/map/placedetail.1815870/Punta%20Brava/] as a star example of how to create a climate-resilient future for all Central American communities. Inspired by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, a bamboo-based community will not only be of immense social value, but it will also create enormous environmental and financial capital for the region and the planet.
The Workshop will be led by engineer/architect Martin Mortera [https://www.bambooarchitecture.mx/] and bio-architect Peter van Lengen [http://tibarose.com/tiba.php?lang=ing] who have been the leaders of the World Bamboo Workshop [https://www.worldbambooworkshop.com]circuit. Both have mentored hundreds of students and transferred their passion and knowledge of working with bamboo and other locally sourced biomaterials to create functional yet brilliantly creative constructions.
Stay tuned for more details and registration!

Rest in peace, dear Professor Liese
Our beloved mentor, teacher, scholar, gentleman, and friend, Dr. Walter Liese [https://worldbamboo.net/about/bamboo-pioneers/walter-liese] has passed away, February 24, 2023.
To many of us, he was like a father or a grandfather, helping and critiquing us as we searched for knowledge in understanding bamboo. Fortunately he lived a very long life to the age of 97, working until the end, to understand all he could about bamboo, too. He was forever curious, and enjoyed learning what everyone around him was doing, writing, and thinking.
In 2009 he was honored by the World Bamboo Organization as one of our first World Bamboo Pioneers [https://worldbamboo.net/about/bamboo-pioneers/walter-liese] He was proud of that, as he was to give the first UEDA lecture at the 8th World Bamboo Congress in Bangkok. [https://worldbamboo.net/proceedings/wbcviii]
Here is a wonderful eulogy [https://worldbamboo.net/_uploads/pdfs/in-memoriam-prof-dr-walter-liese-by-w…] written by his friend Dr. Wulf Killman, that was published by IUFRO [https://www.iufro.org/] of which WBO is a member, and another in memoriam [https://www.inbar.int/in-memoriam-of-professor-walter-liese/] from INBAR.
Stay tuned for the launch of the 12th WBC website coming soon!
