European forests are of immense importance to people, the environment and the economy. They provide timber, biodiversity, water catchment protection, medicine, areas of natural beauty, protection against avalanche, flooding and landslides and many other benefits.
These forests, however, are under unprecedented threat:
Rapid climate change, which places ecosystems under stress,
An escalation in the numbers of alien pests (with particular attention to the pine wood nematode) and pathogens fuelled by increased global trade, population mobility and tourism,
And how climate change and the pests and pathogens are interacting to increase the threat.
In this webinar Professor Hugh Evans, Deputy Coordinator 7.03.12 – Alien invasive species and international trade, and Professor Steve Woodward will address these factors by discussing their work with two key projects at the forefront of protecting Europe’s trees and plants: REPHRAME and ISEFOR.

The Ohio State Translational Plant Sciences Graduate Program (TPS - http://tpsgp.osu.edu/) is starting its third year with a call for highly qualified graduate students. This is an exciting program. Please let your students know of this opportunity!
* TPS-GP is designed to offer an individually driven pathway for our students to attain their PhDs. This could include an internship in a company, national lab, not for profit, etc. It could also include an international experience, either via an internship or as a student in our Dual-Degree program, which allows students to earn 2 PhDs at the same time, one from OSU and one from the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil.
* The TPS-GP program is focused on a rigorous research experience that could include laboratory rotations and minimal coursework. Our Graduate Studies Committee is dedicated to tailoring every student's path to their PhD based on what each individual desires.

The Department of Botany and Plant Pathology (BPP) (http://bpp.oregonstate.edu/) seeks applicants for a 9-month, full-time (1.0 FTE), tenure-track faculty position in Forest Pathology. This position is a joint position with the Department of Forest Ecosystems & Society (http://fes.forestry.oregonstate.edu/) with a tenure home in BPP.
The successful candidate is expected to establish an innovative and competitive research program that pursues scholarly work in the area of Forest Pathology. Research specialization within Forest Pathology is open, although as part of the research effort, the candidate will be expected to address emerging and/or re-emerging diseases in forest ecosystems of Oregon. Recognition will be given to collaborative efforts with researchers at OSU and at other national or international institutions.
The incumbent will contribute to the teaching of a course in forest disease management and will teach a course supportive of the Plant Pathology curriculum. There is an expectation that the candidate will mentor and serve as research advisor to graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, and will support outreach efforts in forest health.
Required qualifications include a PhD with research experience in plant pathology, mycology or closely related field, and a commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity. Postdoctoral experience is strongly preferred. Other preferred qualifications include research experience in forest pathology, potential for effective teaching and development of an interdisciplinary research program, and a record of/commitment to work with underrepresented/underserved students or other audiences.

The Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management at the University of California, Berkeley seeks an Assistant Cooperative Extension Specialist (Fiscal Year) in Forest Health. The expected start date is July 1, 2015. The Forest Health Specialist will help create a collaborative, multidisciplinary and multifaceted research and outreach program with UC Cooperative Extension Advisors and Specialists; community partners; government/institutional groups; forestland owners and managers, and land management and advisory agencies with forestland responsibilities. The Specialist will investigate the linkages between policy and planning processes, and environmental outcomes on forests at multiple scales.
The completion of all Ph.D. (or equivalent) degree requirements except the dissertation is required at the time of application. The Ph.D. (or equivalent) degree is required by the start date. The successful candidate will have a doctoral degree (or equivalent) in a discipline related to forest health, including, but not limited to, forest science, entomology, disturbance ecology, or integrated pest management. Additional qualifications include demonstrated writing and public speaking skills to communicate to a diverse audience of professional and non- technical clientele, the ability to design and carry out high quality research in a discipline related to forest health, and the capacity to serve as a team member on interdisciplinary projects in forest health and ecosystem sustainability. The candidate should be able to work productively with diverse communities and stakeholders, and to build cross-disciplinary teams to meet the diverse challenges of the interaction of forest pests and diseases with fires, resource management, and public safety. Salary is commensurate with experience.
The Specialist will be expected to develop a nationally competitive research program and to obtain extramural grant funds.
