Dear Forest Entomology Colleagues,
Below is the first announcement of the joint 7.03.05 / 7.03.12 meeting to
be held in Bariloche (Patagonia), Argentina 1-4 Sept., 2015. I believe this
is going to be an excellent meeting of interest to anybody working on bark-
/ wood-boring insects or those interested in the role of globalization on
forest insect and disease invasions. -Sandy Liebhold

Research on the ecology and pest management of bark and wood boring insects
is constantly moving forward. This is partly due to an array of non-native
species, arriving into new areas and increasingly affecting native and
plantation forests worldwide. Several species are thus shared by more than
one country and region attracting cross-border research. Focused on these
shared concerns, IUFRO Sections *7.03.05 "Ecology and Management of Bark
and Wood Boring Insects" and Section 7.03.12 "**Alien Invasive Species and
International Trade"* will meet in Bariloche, Argentina in September 1-4,
2015. This joint meeting will be organized by GEPI (Grupo de Ecologia de
Poblaciones de Insectos - INTA EEA Bariloche). This research group has been
studying the population ecology and behavior of the woodwasp Sirex noctilio
and its natural enemies for the past 10 years.
Bariloche is a small city located in Patagonia, by the Nahuel Huapi lake,
at the foot of the Andes.The city is situated within the Nahuel Huapi
National Park, and lies on an impressive landscape that varies in a range
of a few kilometers from steppe to rain-forest in an East-West direction,
surrounded by the stunning beauty of mountains and lakes.
We plan an exciting venue, expecting the highest academic standards. The
meeting will include a field trip to visit several areas of native and
planted forests in Patagonia.

Multiple assistantships (M.S. and Ph.D.) available to study native and non-native forest insect dynamics at the School of Environmental and Forest Sciences, University of Washington, Seattle, Washington
Anticipated Start Date: Autumn Quarter, 2015
Application Deadline: December 31, 2014 for Priority Consideration
Multiple graduate student assistantships are available in the laboratory of Dr. Patrick Tobin starting in Autumn Quarter, 2015.
Students selected for these assistantships will have the opportunity to participate in one of several research projects broadly aimed at quantifying the roles of abiotic and biotic factors on the rate of non-native insect establishment and spread, and their effects on native ecosystems; and investigating relationships among native insects, plant pathogens, and climate in second-growth Douglas-fir forests in western Washington. Potential projects could include field-based research, laboratory-based research, and modeling, or a combination of all three.
Applications from students with interests in invasion ecology, entomology, and forest ecology are encouraged to apply. Students with a strong quantitative and/or GIS background are particularly encouraged to apply.

Highly qualified potential graduate students are invited to join the
Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Alberta (

based at the University of Alberta, this project will be conducted in
collaboration with Dr. Allan Carroll in the Department of Forest and

*Project:* This project is part of a large multi-institutional,
multi-investigator study: “*The NSERC TRIA Network: Turning risk into
action for the Mountain Pine Beetle (MPB) epidemic*” (
http://www.thetriaproject.ca/) with the main goal to fill key knowledge
gaps of the MPB-pine-fungal associate system that limits our ability to
monitor, assess, and predict MPB risk to Canada's forests. Within this
overall objective, the graduate student will *determine potential for
long-term persistence and eruption by MPB in novel pine forests.*
*Objectives*
*(1) *Quantify the endemic niche of MPB in novel habitats east of the Rocky
Mountains.
*(2) *Determine the endemic-epidemic threshold in these novel habitats.
*(3) *Determine the effect of population density on MPB dispersal capacity.
The student will conduct both field and laboratory experiments to achieve
these objectives.
Applicants must have an Honors degree or higher (e.g. MSc) relevant to
biology, training and experience. We seek students with an interest in
ecology and a background in entomology and field work would be an asset.
Applicants should have a high GPA (3.5+ or minimum A-), be highly competent
in quantitative analyses, and possess excellent written and oral
communication skills in English.
The position provides full funding for MSc (2.3 years) or PhD (5 years) to
qualified applicants.
