Dear Friends and Colleagues,
May I draw your attention to the following position as Professor in Insect Ecology at the Department of Ecology, SLU, Uppsala.
http://www.slu.se/sv/om-slu/fristaende-sidor/aktuellt/lediga-tjanster/las-m…
The professorship should focus on the ecology and dynamics of insect populations. Of particular interest is basic understanding of the population processes affecting distribution and abundance and how these processes interact with changing environmental conditions. Understanding of how population growth can be controlled is also central.
The professor will develop and lead an eminent research group with the ability to attract external financing. This includes taking advantage of opportunities for collaboration within and outside the department. The professor is expected to carry out research and other activities with a clear connection to the applied part of the insect research in the Department of Ecology, e.g. conservation biology, agricultural and forest entomology. The professor in Insect Ecology is also expected to contribute to the strengthening of cooperation between entomologists and ecologists in and outside the department.
Please forward this email to appropriate candidates.
Apologies for any double posting of this message.
Best wishes,
Christer B

Quantitative Ecologist - 2 year Research Position
Montana State University (MSU) and U.S. Forest Service, Rocky Mountain Research Station (RMRS) in Bozeman, Montana seek a motivated quantitative ecologist to join a multi-disciplinary effort examining effects of climate change and mountain pine beetle disturbance on vegetation structure and composition, fire dynamics, and habitat suitability of selected woodpecker species. Synergistic interactions of climate, mountain pine beetle and wildfire are likely to catalyze landscape-scale changes in vegetation distributions, forest structure, and wildlife habitat suitability.
Job description: Primary work will be linking models of an ecosystem process, including a fire model, with a model of mountain pine beetle demography, with a model of wildlife habitat suitability. The linked models will allow for tracking tree and stand-level mortality in response to climate change and mountain pine beetle disturbance, and the associated interactions with fire, land management activities, and wildlife habitat suitability. The job will be located at RMRS on the MSU campus, Bozeman, MT and the successful candidate will be expected to spend work-time among Bozeman, Logan, UT, and Missoula, MT. Duties include acquiring, analyzing, and managing large climate databases; integrating models of mountain pine beetle demographics, fire, and avian demographics; analyzing spatial and tabular modeling results; manuscript preparation and publication; and oral presentations at workshops and scientific meetings.
Qualifications: The applicant should have: (1) a Ph.D. focused on applied mathematical modeling or biostatistics in ecology or natural resources, or sufficient research experience to perform required tasks; (2) excellent quantitative skills; (3) a demonstrated ability to publish in peer-reviewed journals; and (4) strong motivation to work independently and as a team member. The successful applicant is preferred to have strong interest and skills in computer modeling. Ideally, the candidate will have experience in use of C and Matlab programming, and extensive database management skills. Experience with spatial data manipulation (e.g., ArcGis and/or ERDAS) and statistical (R) software, and associated programs (e.g., Python) are also strongly desired. Importantly, the candidate will have a background in ecology or natural resources.
Send CV, statement of interest, reference list, cover letter, and copies of 3 relevant publications to Dr. Victoria Saab at vsaab(a)fs.fed.us. For more information contact Dr. Saab, Dr. Barbara Bentz (bbentz(a)fs.fed.us) or Dr. Rachel Loehman (rloehman(a)fs.fed.us) and see websites http://www.rmrs.nau.edu/wildlife/birdsandburns/; www.usu.edu/beetle; and http://www.firelab.org/cfdg.

A postdoc position in bark beetle phylogenetics is open at the University Museum of Bergen:
http://jobbnor.no/en/available-jobs/job/99273/postdoctoral-fellow-in-biosys…
Postdoctoral fellow in biosystematics - phylogenetic diversity of bark and ambrosia beetles
At the Museum of Natural History, University Museum of Bergen, a position as postdoctoral research fellow is available for 2 years in the NFR funded project <A phylogenomic approach to understand the diversification of bark beetles and associated microbes>. The fellow will be associated with the research group Phylogenetic Systematics and Evolution at the museum (http://www.uib.no/rg/pse)
Bark and ambrosia beetles are a species rich group of wood-boring insects that contain more than 10 % of the total weevil diversity. This group of wood-boring weevils shows extreme variation in ecological and biological adaptations, thus offering great opportunities for testing exciting evolutionary hypotheses. The postdoc will focus mainly on comparative phylogenetic analyses of diversification, particularly in relation to host plant evolution, symbiosis with microbial fungi, and variation in reproductive and genetic systems in these beetles. The research will be based in part on accumulated biological and ecological data, but additional fieldwork in the Afrotropics may be considered. It will also be necessary to participate in the reconstruction of large-scale bark beetle phylogenies. The postdoc will collaborate with team members from Michigan State University (East Lansing), University of Florida (Gainsville), one PhD student (started 2012) and the project leader at the University Museum in Bergen.
Applicants must hold a PhD degree in evolutionary biology with relevance to biosystematics. The thesis must have been submitted by the application deadline. Applicants should have broad experience with phylogenetic research and diversification analyses, or coevolutionary approaches and similar types of phylogeny based analyses. Entomological expertise and knowledge about bark and ambrosia beetles is considered an advantage, but not mandatory. The selected candidate must document ability to work independently and in groups, and have a proven record of publishing scientific papers.
Expected starting date is April 2014, but flexible within first half of 2014. Salary level 57 on the government salary scale (corresponding to NOK 473,100 per year).
Additional information on the position is available from the PI, associate professor Bjarte Jordal, phone +47 55 58 2233, e-mail: bjarte.jordal(a)um.uib.no<mailto:bjarte.jordal@um.uib.no>

June 2014 Conference: http://www.westernforestry.org/Events/conference/2014-five-needle-pine-gene…
Hello and Happy New Year!
We may have an unique opportunity to “support a maximum of 3 scientists (e.g. one each from Africa, Asia and Latin America) to attend the “Five needle pine genetics (2.02.15) & Rust of Forest Trees (7.02.05)” conference in June 2014. Some of you may know outstanding candidates around the world that normally would not have a chance to attend and contribute to this type of meeting.
I would like to ask for your assistance locating candidates (short deadline on this) - those qualifying for sponsorship are from “low income” and “lower middle income” countries that I have indicated in red on the list below (I’ve done this quickly, so subject to verification, the source pdf is attached). Our IUFRO conference organisers/scientific committee selects the candidates for sponsorship (based on abstract submitted). Please note that an approved oral or poster is a considered a pre-condition for sponsorship. There are several steps to go through in this process of sponsorship, so we need to locate suitable candidates as soon as possible.
Some possibilities: There are 5-needle pines (white pine) species in parts of Asia that we know little of; I’m sure there are many rusts of forest trees that we know little of.
Information about the IUFRO Working Groups and the conference can be found at the link below
June 2014 Conference: http://www.westernforestry.org/Events/conference/2014-five-needle-pine-gene…
We have limited funding opportunity here, so if you know good qualified candidates, that will help the committee in its decision.
***Please send names/emails to me at rsniezko(a)fs.fed.us<mailto:rsniezko@fs.fed.us>, or have the candidates send me their information (name, institute, email address, species working on, proposed title(s) of presentation. The call for abstracts will also be out soon (next week).
Best regards,
Richard
