Hello potential NAFIWC moderators, speakers and attendees.
We received many great suggestions for sessions at our upcoming NAFIWC 2016 - May 31-June3 in Washington, DC
Attached is a listing of the sessions accepted for the program so far.
In addition, the program committee identified some key topics that are not, as of yet, covered in our agenda. These are:
1. Insect responses to climate change
2. Non-native species
3. Drought and fire and disturbance
4. Insect ecology - life history, population dynamics
5. Biocontrol
6. Chemical Control of Insects - loss of products
7. Pollinators
8. The "omics", practicality of using molecular approaches.
We are seeking volunteers to moderate sessions (and line up speakers) on these general topics.
In addition, we still have available slots for a few open sessions.
One of these might even be a general open session for submitted papers, we would still need a volunteer to organize and moderate that session.
So, please consider what we have so far, what we still need, and what we might yet need... then, if you feel so moved, volunteer to help us cover that topic.
Please submit your proposals (in the format below) to Kier Klepzig, Program Chair - NO LATER THAN October 30, 2015
Thanks for sharing, networking, suggesting and volunteering!

Caring for the land and serving people
Hello all,
The North Central Forest Pest Workshop is coming up at the Menominee Casino Resort in Keshena, Wisconsin, USA on September 21-24th. The "earlybird" registration rate of $185 is good until August 21st. If you wait until after that, the price goes up to $210. There is a student or retiree rate, and single day rates. See the attached registration form for details. Payment for registration can be made via check or Paypal.
The theme for this year is "Reconnecting Silviculture and Forest Health". We have many interesting speakers and topics lined up, plus an all-day field trip into the beautiful 235,000 acre forest of the Menominee Indian Nation to observe oak wilt management, large diameter hemlock and white pine, emerald ash borer and beech bark disease silviculture modifications, among other things. A draft agenda is attached.
We are currently accepting entrants into the student paper competition. We have a limited number of time slots, so if you are a student who wants to present a paper, get your request in early! See the attached registration form for instructions on signing up a student paper.
We will have a poster session as well, with no limit on the number of people who can register with a poster. We aren't planning to have a competition associated with the posters-just sharing of information. If you're bringing a poster, indicate that on your registration form.
A block of rooms is being held at the Menominee Casino Resort at the great rate of $70 per night, plus we have additional rooms held at hotels in Shawano. Info about that is on the registration form, and on the website.

Dear Forest Ent Colleagues:
July 1 is rapidly approaching and this marks the deadline for registering for the joint meeting of IUFRO working parties, 7.03.05 "Ecology and Management of Bark and Wood Boring Insects" and 7.03.12 "Alien Invasive Species and International Trade" in Bariloche, Argentina.
I encourage all of you to make an effort to attend. This is going to be a fantastic meeting in many ways. These two units have never before jointly met and given the growing importance of invading insects in our field, this will be a key meeting. It is also a great opportunity for those with interests in, or seeking exposure to problems in planted forests.
The word "spectacular" is an under-statement in describing the setting in Argentine, Patagonia. We'll have an opportunity to see some of North America's finest conifer species growing in the setting of crystal blue lakes and snow-capped mountains. And "best" yet, many of these stands are being severely damaged by the destructive and charismatic woodwasp, Sirex noctilio. The combination of trees, mountains and forest insects doesn't get any better!
So if you are undecided about attending the meeting, I'd encourage you to go. But please be sure to submit your abstract before July at:
https://sites.google.com/site/iufrobariloche2015
See you in Patagonia!

We are pleased to provide further details about the upcoming meeting on “Population Dynamics and Integrated Control of Forest Defoliating and Other Insects”.
The meeting is jointly organized by 3 IUFRO Working Parties: 7.03.07 "Population Dynamics of Forest Insects", 7.03.06 "Integrated management of forest defoliating insects", & 7.03.13 "Biological control of forest insects and pathogens".
It will be held in Sopot, Poland from Sept 28 – Oct. 2, 2015.
Further details can be found on the webpage: https://www.ibles.pl/web/iufro/about
Hope to see you there.
Dear Entomologists,
The purpose of this email is to provide an update about the status of
crowdfunding for a project to survey the native forests of South Africa
with citizen science
<https://experiment.com/projects/discovering-plant-destroyers-in-south-afric…>.
My name is Joey Hulbert and I am pleased to say we have reached 84% ($4,185
USD) of our goal. More than 57 people have made pledges, including a few
forest health specialists. We still need to raise ~$800 USD so I am asking
that you help share the project one more time. Please help us reach our
goal by sharing the project via social networking, email, or speaking with
colleagues and stakeholders.
By backing the project, individuals will be able to follow the progress
through regular updates and direct communication. Backers will also have
many opportunities to improve the project by contributing ideas and
feedback for problem solving and the project design.
If you want to listen to a short (~4:00) discussion about the project, this
is a link to an interview I had on NPR:
http://klcc.org/post/osu-microbiologist-heads-south-africa
During the course of the crowdfunding campaign, I have also created several
open access lab-notes (pseudo blog posts) that are complimentary to the
project.
· How do you teach someone about microorganisms without a microscope?
https://experiment.com/u/E9e9aQ
· Surveying for plant destroyers https://experiment.com/u/52APhQ
· "Fight them on the beaches or let the new order begin"
https://experiment.com/u/8KXEFg
· Six reasons to back this research https://experiment.com/u/Lc1E7w
· What is citizen science https://experiment.com/u/WETOKA
· A recent excursion into Sudden Oak Death infected lands
https://experiment.com/u/22omNA
I hope this project provides an example of the opportunities with
crowdfunding. Feel free to contact me if you are considering using
crowdfunding—I would be happy to share what I have learned and provide
recommendations. I can also direct you to several examples of previously
funded projects regarding invasive insects such as the Emerald ash borer.
Thank you to everyone who has helped already. I am excited to start this
project and I am confident we will reach our goal with your help. Please
share the project one more time.
Sincerely,
Joey Hulbert
