Dear Forest Ent Colleagues:
July 1 is rapidly approaching and this marks the deadline for registering for the joint meeting of IUFRO working parties, 7.03.05 "Ecology and Management of Bark and Wood Boring Insects" and 7.03.12 "Alien Invasive Species and International Trade" in Bariloche, Argentina.
I encourage all of you to make an effort to attend. This is going to be a fantastic meeting in many ways. These two units have never before jointly met and given the growing importance of invading insects in our field, this will be a key meeting. It is also a great opportunity for those with interests in, or seeking exposure to problems in planted forests.
The word "spectacular" is an under-statement in describing the setting in Argentine, Patagonia. We'll have an opportunity to see some of North America's finest conifer species growing in the setting of crystal blue lakes and snow-capped mountains. And "best" yet, many of these stands are being severely damaged by the destructive and charismatic woodwasp, Sirex noctilio. The combination of trees, mountains and forest insects doesn't get any better!
So if you are undecided about attending the meeting, I'd encourage you to go. But please be sure to submit your abstract before July at:

It's time to register for the 2015 Southern Forest Insect Work Conference, 21-24 July 2015, The Chancellor Hotel, in Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA!
The SFIWC 2015 registration form is available exclusively online through Eventbrite again this year. Go to https://sfiwc2015.eventbrite.com to register. The registration fee is $250 ($150 for students and retired members), which includes a ticket to the Thursday night banquet for the registrant. Extra banquet tickets for guests are $35. Registration receipts and banquet tickets will be distributed at the registration table.
Pre-registration on the Eventbrite website will be accepted until July 10, 2015. After this date, only on-site registration will be available.
IMPORTANT!!!: If you choose, you can now pay your registration fee online at the Eventbrite website (https://sfiwc2015.eventbrite.com) with a credit card prior to the meeting! Please be aware that the deadline for paying via credit card is July 10, 2015. Credit card payments will NOT be accepted after this date! Credit card payments will NOT be accepted "at the door!"

FACULTY POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: FOREST HEALTH OUTREACH SPECIALIST
POSITION AND RESPONSIBILITIES: This is a 12-month, 75% outreach and 25% research, appointment offered at the rank of Public Service Assistant. This position reports directly to the Dean of the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources (Warnell School). This position is located in the Warnell School but stationed at the University of Georgia Tifton Campus in Tifton, GA working from the Center for Invasive Species and Ecosystem Health (www.bugwood.org) The successful candidate will be expected to develop an active outreach program to deliver relevant, current, refereed literature and science-based forest health information and policy to the state and region. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an active program based on extramural funding to support the outreach and research program. The successful candidate shall establish a regionally / nationally recognized program in forest health. Individuals with experience in field diagnosis and management of forest insects and pathogens (native and introduced) are especially encouraged to apply. Applications from individuals with experience in applied forest health issues relevant to southern ecosystems and experience in developing and implementing education and outreach programming are encouraged. The successful candidate will be expected to help further develop the Warnell School’s academic program, serve on Senior Project/Thesis advisory committees, direct/mentor graduate students, serve on School/University committees, and actively participate in professional /scientific societies.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree, with at least one degree in forestry, natural resources, or a related field. Evidence of successful outreach program and research productivity, and the potential to attract external funding, is required. The successful candidate will provide compelling evidence for, or potential of, outreach productivity and should have experience in: outreach or extension education; conducting and reporting applied research; successfully mentor students; and non-traditional or on-line instruction. The successful candidate will collaborate with other outreach and research faculty and must also demonstrate an ability and willingness to work closely with State and Federal public land management partners, Cooperative Extension Agents, private forest landowners, natural resource managers and other constituent groups.

Here is an update on *IUFRO 07.03.05 - 07.03.12 Joint Meeting "A global
perspective on the ecology and management of bark and wood boring insects"*,
Bariloche 2015.
*Registration and Abstract Submission*
Registration and Abstract Submission are now open, and will close on July
1st, 2015.
In order to attend to this event and/or submit an abstract you will need to
be registered. Please note that for organizational reasons, you must
register within the specified dates. It will not be possible to register on
site.

*Field trip*
We are arranging a day-long field excursion. We will visit Cerro Otto
Mountain to observe the forest-steppe gradient. Then we will go to a
typical steppe "estancia" where we will visit pine plantations with
different degrees of attacks by wood boaring insects, and there, we will
have a traditional Patagonic lamb and empanadas. Finally, we will go to
Nahuel Huapi Lake towards Circuito Chico and the Llao-Llao Nothofagus
forest.
*Fees*
We charge no registration fees for the meeting. However, additional
activities including the field trip will have a cost of US$400 that will be
charged exclusively on-site. For those interested in these activities
please enlist upon registration, as there is a limited number of available
spaces.
Please note that by attending to the field trip you are also contributing
to a better meeting!

crowdfunding for a project to survey the native forests of South Africa
with citizen science

My name is Joey Hulbert and I am pleased to say we have reached 84% ($4,185
USD) of our goal. More than 57 people have made pledges, including a few
forest health specialists. We still need to raise ~$800 USD so I am asking
that you help share the project one more time. Please help us reach our
goal by sharing the project via social networking, email, or speaking with
colleagues and stakeholders.
By backing the project, individuals will be able to follow the progress
through regular updates and direct communication. Backers will also have
many opportunities to improve the project by contributing ideas and
