Dear Future Attendees of the 2016 North American Forest Insect Work Conference,
The dates, location, and venue are set. The program is developing. The website is now online at http://www.cpe.vt.edu/nafiwc16/index.html
Reservations are being taken for the host hotel Washington Marriott Wardman Park http://www.cpe.vt.edu/nafiwc16/location.html. Click on the passkey link dedicated to our conference.
There is a Sponsorship/Exhibitor Committee being thankfully headed up by John Riggins to help find support for the conference (http://www.cpe.vt.edu/nafiwc16/sponsors.html) Registration charges for participation will be influenced by how well we do in this area. Please pass on contact information of any potential sponsors and exhibitors to him.
We hope to have online registration available by the end of the year if not sooner.
Note we are hoping to be able to offer a couple of field trips for the afternoon of Tuesday May 31, prior to the evening's opening reception. Bob Rabaglia will be helping to organize these activities.
Kier Klepzig and the Program Committee have made good progress on developing a program with great input from many of you. This work continues.
Please let us know if you have any questions about the conference and location. We may have immediate answers or may need to defer until we know better.
Look forward to seeing so many colleagues and hopefully new faces this spring in D.C.
Regards,

Dear FORENT members,
I am conducting a survey on the role of emotional support systems and how
they contribute to success in science. In particular, I am interested in
how support systems have contributed to the success of women and men in
Forestry, Entomology, and Forest Entomology. If you have already completed
the survey, I thank you very much for your participation! I apologize for
any cross postings.
I invite men and women at all stages in their careers, as well as those who
are no longer in science, to participate. *Please forward this invitation
to anyone you know who is no longer in science, but completed graduate
school (M.S. or Ph.D.)*. The results of this study will be published in the
primary literature.
*Please follow the link below to complete the brief, 28-question survey by

Photographers of all ages* and skill levels are invited to participate in the 2015 Forest Invasives Photo Contest. The purpose of this contest is to raise awareness about forest invasive species and to encourage Canadians to learn how to identify them. All entries will be posted on our website and may be incorporated into our educational content. A judging panel will review and rate all of the photos and the top three entries will receive a prize. So grab your cameras and start shooting! You will be surprised how many invasive species you can find in your own backyard!

Hello potential NAFIWC moderators, speakers and attendees.
We received many great suggestions for sessions at our upcoming NAFIWC 2016 - May 31-June3 in Washington, DC
Attached is a listing of the sessions accepted for the program so far.
In addition, the program committee identified some key topics that are not, as of yet, covered in our agenda. These are:
1. Insect responses to climate change
2. Non-native species
3. Drought and fire and disturbance
4. Insect ecology - life history, population dynamics
5. Biocontrol
6. Chemical Control of Insects - loss of products
7. Pollinators
8. The "omics", practicality of using molecular approaches.
We are seeking volunteers to moderate sessions (and line up speakers) on these general topics.
In addition, we still have available slots for a few open sessions.
One of these might even be a general open session for submitted papers, we would still need a volunteer to organize and moderate that session.
So, please consider what we have so far, what we still need, and what we might yet need... then, if you feel so moved, volunteer to help us cover that topic.
Please submit your proposals (in the format below) to Kier Klepzig, Program Chair - NO LATER THAN October 30, 2015
Thanks for sharing, networking, suggesting and volunteering!
- Kier

Hello all,
The North Central Forest Pest Workshop is coming up at the Menominee Casino Resort in Keshena, Wisconsin, USA on September 21-24th. The "earlybird" registration rate of $185 is good until August 21st. If you wait until after that, the price goes up to $210. There is a student or retiree rate, and single day rates. See the attached registration form for details. Payment for registration can be made via check or Paypal.
The theme for this year is "Reconnecting Silviculture and Forest Health". We have many interesting speakers and topics lined up, plus an all-day field trip into the beautiful 235,000 acre forest of the Menominee Indian Nation to observe oak wilt management, large diameter hemlock and white pine, emerald ash borer and beech bark disease silviculture modifications, among other things. A draft agenda is attached.
We are currently accepting entrants into the student paper competition. We have a limited number of time slots, so if you are a student who wants to present a paper, get your request in early! See the attached registration form for instructions on signing up a student paper.
We will have a poster session as well, with no limit on the number of people who can register with a poster. We aren't planning to have a competition associated with the posters-just sharing of information. If you're bringing a poster, indicate that on your registration form.
A block of rooms is being held at the Menominee Casino Resort at the great rate of $70 per night, plus we have additional rooms held at hotels in Shawano. Info about that is on the registration form, and on the website.
If you need more information about the upcoming NCFPW, consult the webpage at http://www.forestpathology.org/hosted/ncfpw/ncfpw15/webpage2015.pdf

Caring for the land and serving people
Dear Forest Ent Colleagues:
July 1 is rapidly approaching and this marks the deadline for registering for the joint meeting of IUFRO working parties, 7.03.05 "Ecology and Management of Bark and Wood Boring Insects" and 7.03.12 "Alien Invasive Species and International Trade" in Bariloche, Argentina.
I encourage all of you to make an effort to attend. This is going to be a fantastic meeting in many ways. These two units have never before jointly met and given the growing importance of invading insects in our field, this will be a key meeting. It is also a great opportunity for those with interests in, or seeking exposure to problems in planted forests.
The word "spectacular" is an under-statement in describing the setting in Argentine, Patagonia. We'll have an opportunity to see some of North America's finest conifer species growing in the setting of crystal blue lakes and snow-capped mountains. And "best" yet, many of these stands are being severely damaged by the destructive and charismatic woodwasp, Sirex noctilio. The combination of trees, mountains and forest insects doesn't get any better!
So if you are undecided about attending the meeting, I'd encourage you to go. But please be sure to submit your abstract before July at:
https://sites.google.com/site/iufrobariloche2015
See you in Patagonia!
