The International Forest Biosecurity Conference will provide a unique
opportunity to explore the latest thinking on forest biosecurity: from

• Workshop on managing the biosecurity threats to forests in a changing
global environment.
• Working parties of the International Union of Forestry Research
Organizations (IUFRO) division 1 (silviculture), division 7 (forest health)

Join us in exploring key questions such as:
• How do we model the impacts of weeds, insects and diseases on forest
productivity?
• How do we define pests of the future and model likelihood of their
establishment?
• How do we stop pests moving around the world?
• Can we manage vegetation without herbicides?
• Can we manage quarantine pests without fumigants like methyl bromide?
• Are diverse forests more resistant to pest impacts?
• What are the best techniques for eradicating pest?
Embedded in the conference programme will be a workshop on managing
biosecurity threats to forests in a changing global envrionemnent.
International guest speakers will discuss the challenge of integrating
biosecurity research and science into policy, regulation and operational
management.
There also will be a field trip to visit forestry sites and the picturesque
Port of Tauranga to learn about biosecurity in action. Speakers will
demonstrate how New Zealand deals with the practical challenges of
quarantine treatments, incursion response and pest/weed management in the
real world.

An exciting opportunity has arisen in our Forest Biosecurity and Protection
team for an enthusiastic Scientist with biometrics, statistical analysis or
mathematical modelling expertise. The scientific focus will be on modelling
the spatial and temporal dynamics of newly introduced or established forest
pest species (insects, pathogens, weeds), and quantifying their ecological
effects. Important contributions will also be made to our research on
modelling fire behaviour and in the general forestry area.
This position will allow you to develop your international science

A graduate position (M.Sc.) is available Sept 2008 in the Ecosystem
Science and Management program at the University of Northern British
Columbia (www.unbc.ca) Currently, in the central interior of British
Columbia, a massive outbreak of mountain pine beetle is declining, while
populations of secondary bark beetles are simultaneously increasing.
The project entails studying the impacts of these secondaries on small
diameter trees.
Suitable candidates will have a B.Sc. in biology, entomology, forestry,
or similar degree at a recognized, post-secondary institution. The
ideal candidate will have experience in field research settings and an
interest in community ecology.
The project will be supervised by Dr. Brian Aukema of the Canadian
Forest Service at UNBC (http://web.unbc.ca/~aukema) Collaborators
include Dr. Allan Carroll of the Canadian Forest Service and Dr. Staffan
Lindgren at the University of Northern British Columbia. Support is
available for two years. Interested candidates are invited to direct

UNBC, located in Prince George, British Columbia, Canada, offers a

We still have a few vacancies for concurrent sessions. As of now we have
six session topics (bark beetle control, southern pine beetle, hemlock
woolly adelgid, prescribed fire, systemic insecticides, and possibly gypsy
moth), which are just enough to have 2 concurrent sessions per each of 3
time slots. A number of folks at last years meeting indicated a desire to
see 3 concurrent sessions per timeslot, so I strongly encourage you to
submit more ideas and volunteer to moderate a session.
As for the graduate student session, we currently have five speakers and
would like to at least double that number. Graduate students or
professors, please help us fill up this session by contacting Gina Davis (
gina21(a)vt.edu) or Kelly Felderhoff (klfelder(a)ncsu.edu) and providing them
with names, affiliations, and presentation titles as soon as possible.
Finally, there have been no title submissions to date for the poster
session. Once again, please help us put this program together by sending

Please circulate to potential graduate students.
A funded Ph.D. position is available immediately to work with me, Dan
Herms, and other collaborators on a project that will use metabolomic
and proteomic approaches coupled with field studies. The project
will be a test of a new ecological model that integrates the
phenomenon of pathogen-induced systemic resistance with the
growth/differentiation balance hypothesis (Bonello et al. 2006) in
tripartite systems that include Austrian pine (Pinus nigra), the
blight and canker pathogen Diplodia pinea, and two pestiferous
insects, the pine engraver (Ips pini) and the European pine sawfly
(Neodiprion sertifer).
Prospective candidates should have an excellent undergraduate record
in the biological, ecological, or agricultural sciences. A master
degree in tree pathology, entomology, or chemical ecology is strongly
preferred.
