The conference will include both oral and poster presentations, addressing
key issues relating to:
1) Information platform on pests and diseases occurrence in Central Europe;
2) Non-native organisms - network for sharing information on distribution
and spreading;
3) Risk assessment of actual and introduced pests and diseases;
4) Diagnostic tools and evidence systems for forest pests and diseases;
5) The pest and disease controls in the certificated forests (FSC or PEFC).
Suceava is located in the North-Eastern part of Romania and is the main town

CALL FOR ABSTRACT FOR A TECHNICAL SESSION FOR THE CONGRESS THEME: BIODIVERSITY, ECOSYSTEM SERVICES AND BIOLOGICAL INVASIONS
TITLE OF THE SESSION : D7b - Biodiversity, biotic interactions and threats to forest ecosystem services associated with tree reproductive structure insects and pathogens in a changing world
ORGANISERS
Thomas Boivint1, Marie-Anne Auger-Rozenberg2 and Olle Rosenberg3
1Mediterranean Forest Research Unit, INRA, France. 2Research Unit of Forest Zoology, France. 3Skogforsk, The Forestry Reasearch Institute, Sweden.
DESCRIPTION
Insects and pathogens exploiting tree reproductive structures are considered the most important constraint to the reproductive success of trees during the seed pre-dispersal phase. In a context in which the effects of both climate change and biological invasions are increasingly prevalent to these species, this session will propose experimental and theoretical contributions to biodiversity, biotic interactions and threat assessment and management associated with native and exotic insects and pathogens of tree reproductive structures.
DETAILS
Abstracts will be accepted for both posters and oral presentations. Authors are limited to a maximum of two abstracts as presenting author.
DEADLINES
Abstract submission deadline: December 31, 2018. Registration and payment deadline: May 31, 2018.
INSTRUCTIONS
You must be registered for the event to submit an abstract, but you may pay for registration later, up to May 31. Registration and abstract submission must be completed online at http://www.iufro2019.com/

Dear friends and colleagues,
In case you are not aware of it, the abstract submission deadline for the IUFRO Congress 2019 in Curitiba, Brazil (29 Sept. - 5 Oct. 2019) is the end of December (31 Dec. 2019). For details see http://iufro2019.com/abstracts-submission/
I believe all sessions of Research Group RG7.01 (Air pollution and climate change) are under Theme 2 / B7 (Forests and Climate Change),
and sessions of RGs7.02 (Pathology) and 7.03 (Entomology) are under Theme 4 / D7 (Biodiversity, Ecosystem Services and Biological Invasions).
Also, I'd like to wish you all happy holidays and all the best for the new year. I look forward to seeing you at the IUFRO Congress or one of the upcoming IUFRO Division 7 conferences.
Finally, I have some news to share:
After 21 years in New Zealand (and 20 of those with the New Zealand Forest Research Institute / 'Scion'), I will relocate to Switzerland at the beginning of February 2019 to take up a position with the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL, near Zurich.
I look forward to new collaboration opportunities with colleagues in Europe, but I will also continue working with colleagues in New Zealand and elsewhere.
Best wishes,

Dear Colleagues
We invite you to submit an abstract for the Special Session "*Developing
successful biological control programs in forest plantations*" at the IUFRO
World Congress in Curitiba, Brazil, 29 September to 5 October. See below
information on the session and instructions to submit your abstract.
ORGANIZERS: Leonardo Barbosa, Brett Hurley and Carlos Wilcken
CONGRESS THEME: Biodiversity, Ecosystem Services and Biological Invasions
SCOPE OF THE SESSION: Biological control is one of the priority strategies
traditionally used for exotic forest insect pests. Today many biological
control programs have been implemented throughout the world, including in
forest plantations. In many cases, exotic forest insect pests are shared
between multiple countries and there are thus opportunities to share
knowledge and experience on biological control programmes. This session
examines biocontrol programmes in different countries and on different
insect pests. Presentations include traditional approaches to develop
biocontrol programmes, the use of new technologies, and the involvement of
different stakeholders including forest industry, government and business.
DETAILS OF PRESENTATIONS: Presentation should relate to the scope of the
session. Abstracts for both posters and oral presentations can be
submitted. Authors are limited to a maximum of two abstracts as presenting
author.
DEADLINES: Abstract submission deadline: *December 31, 2018*. Registration
and payment deadline: May 31, 2018.
INSTRUCTIONS: You must be registered for the event to submit an abstract,
but you may pay for registration later, up to May 31. Registration and
abstract submission must be completed online at
http://www.iufro2019.com/ . Please
note that the session is currently listed under Congress Theme C, but it
may be moved to Congress Theme D, thus please confirm on the website before
submitting your abstract.
CONTACT: Please contact Leonardo Barbosa (leonardo.r.barbosa(a)embrapa.br) or
Brett Hurley (brett.hurley(a)fabi.up.ac.za) if you have questions about the
session.
Regards
Brett

Hello forpathers and forenters,
Below are a couple of pictures sent to me by a local arborist, wondering what’s going on on the main limbs of a white oak. I am contacting you because I find that this kind of very localized bark discoloration/staining is quite common in oaks. I’ve always suspected these were very small, localized infections by some species of Phytophthora, like citricola, citrophthora, etc. but I’ve never verified. Whatever it is, it seems to me it never goes anywhere, i.e. the lesions remain very small and do not have any serious impact on the host.
Does anyone else actually know what these are? It would be of great interest to me personally, in addition to providing an answer to the arborist.
Cheers!
Enrico
