Postdoctoral Scholar in Forest Entomology
The Forest Entomology Laboratory at Purdue University seeks a Postdoctoral Scholar to advance ongoing research focusing on the integrated pest management of Thousand Cankers Disease (TCD). This disease complex is caused by the association of a fungus (Geosmithia morbida) and the walnut twig beetle (Pityophthorus juglandis). TCD is responsible for the widespread death of black walnut (Juglans nigra) in the western United States, and was recently discovered in the East, where it threatens the health of this important timber species throughout its native range. This is a full-time, two-year appointment based in West Lafayette, IN.
The specific objectives of this study are to evaluate the efficacy of trap trees, semiochemicals and the conservative use of insecticides to reduce WTB populations, while protecting high-value crop trees and minimizing the chemical footprint of walnut plantations.
Responsibilities:
* Work with Principal Investigators to establish field evaluations and sampling regimes.
* Lead field and associated laboratory efforts related to the research objectives. Some overnight travel will be required.
* Develop and present (written and oral) products suitable for scientific audiences explaining the purpose and results of project.
* Create scientific manuscripts based on research that are suitable for publication.
* Participate in scientific meetings and engage with colleagues and collaborators pursuing related research questions.
* Provide guidance and assistance to technicians, students, and others carrying out related work.
Preferred Qualifications:
* A Ph.D. in Entomology, Forest Protection, Ecology or related fields (Ph.D. required).
* Experience designing, organizing, and managing research projects involving insects, trees, or fungi.
* Expertise and experience in chemical ecology and management of insects in forest systems.
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work with an interdisciplinary team.
Preferred start date is Summer 2018. The salary is set at $48,500 per year plus benefits. Interested applicants should submit a single pdf including a cover letter, CV, and names and contact information for three references to mginzel(a)purdue.edu. Please use the subject header “TCD Postdoctoral Scholar”. The cover letter should include (1) a summary of the applicant’s research and analysis experience (2) the applicant’s earliest possible start date.

Dear Colleagues;
i) the registration and abstract submission to our conference goes in full speed, and for now we have around 50 participants who registered, and some of you already sent abstracts both for talks and posters; each of those registered have received automatically generated confirmation, and those that submitted, a personal e-mail from me confirming the submission;
ii) ... but PLEASE NOTE that the deadline for "early bird" registration expires on 2nd of May , and there are just three days left, just in case you intend to come and would like to save 125 EUR; here is the reference to "Registration" link in Conference homepage:
https://www.slu.se/iufro-rots2018 (please read all of it thoroughly)
therefore, as it is the fact that many more colleagues have preliminary expressed interest for participation, it is in your interest to proceed with the registration in a good time;
iii) please proceed also with accommodation arrangements for Uppsala; as stated in the website, accommodation in Uppsala is to be arranged by yourself; do not delay with hotel reservations, as academic activities in both universities of Uppsala start the same week as our Conference;
iv) onward trip to Gotland by ferry is included into registration fee, and reservations for that have been already made (for now, for 85 participants: "first registered, first served"), while the return from Gotland is up to you; note that a ferry from Visby harbour to the mainland on September 1st departs at 07:15 with subsequent bus connections upon its arrival to Nynäshamn; https://www.destinationgotland.se/en/ferry/
this is relevant, as we are supposed to stay within a walking distance from the harbour (but see below);
v) IMPORTANT! the situation with accommodation in Visby has changed drastically just a day ago; on Friday, i tried to make reservation for myself, first at one, then at another of Best Western hotels recommended on Conference website, just to find out that they are fully booked!
vi) yet after some slight panic, even better option has been found:
https://www.scandichotels.se/hotell/sverige/visby/scandic-visby?cmpid=ppc_B…
for now, 45 standard double rooms (for those, price 1220 SEK/night, for now, approx. 120 EUR, payment at arrival), 20 family rooms and 10 suites are pre-reserved at this hotel for our Conference (note that double accommodation could be an option also in standard rooms);
upon reservation, provide reservation number 46605559-LIFE+; the group reservation for us is secured until 15th of May; after that date, the rooms become "loose", and accommodation arrangements in Visby are fully up to you;
the hotel is situated approx. 100 m from the terminal, and within walking distance from Conference venue:
Wisby Strand Conference Centre in Visby<http://www.wisbystrand.se/>
accommodation so close to the terminal is very relevant both for arrival (just before midnight on August 29th, and hotel knows about it), and for departure on early morning (07:15) on September 1st;
vii) regarding Conference publications, please also consider preparing manuscripts for peer-reviewed scientific journals; those will be considered for publication in good reputation, non-commercial (free-of charge), open access, WoS impact factor journals; ... but should be ready by the end of the Conference, where we also discuss in more detail the process of eventual submission;
looking forward to greeting you in Sweden, and kind regards;
rimvys

Dear colleagues,
We are pleased to announce you that the journal Annals of Forest Science
has launched a special issue entitled "Entomological issues during
forest diebacks". In brief, the aim of this topical issue would be to
illustrate the role of insects as inciting and contributing factors
during forest declines, but also the outcomes of forest declines on
insect communities. Potential topics could include the contribution of
defoliators / bark and ambrosia beetles / longhorns and buprestids… to
declines, the role of insects as vector of pathogens contributing to
declines, the impact of declines on the community of saproxylic beetles…
The deadline for submission of your manuscript will be at the end of
October. When submitting, please select "Insects and tree diebacks" in
the Choose article type menu. The manuscripts will be double-blind
peer-reviewed.
More information can be found on the blog of Annals of Forest Science:

Dear all,
We have now advertised a professorship in Forest Entomology and Forest Protection at Freiburg University. I would greatly appreciate, if you could disseminate this in your networks and if possible also encourage promising candidates to apply. I would be happy to provide people with more background to the position, the faculty etc. Do you have an Email List for the IUFRO Division that could be used to forward the position announcement to the forest entomology community?

Sentinel plantings are a tool for the detection, identification and risk assessment of pests and diseases before arrival in a new country, potentially allowing better prevention and management of alien pest and disease introductions. The most recent methodological and regulatory developments and results from sentinel planting studies will be presented during the conference.
More details are available on a dedicated website: https://www.ibles.pl/en/web/cost/final-action-meeting Please note the following important dates:
Deadline for abstract submission: 15 May 2018.
Deadline for registration: 15 June 2018.

About the Conference session organizer
Institute of Lowland Forestry and Environment (ILFE) was founded in 1958
under the name of the Poplar Research Institute by the Parliament of the
Autonomous Province of Vojvodina. Soon after, the Institute has been renamed
the Institute for Poplars and Non-forest Greenery and finally, in October
2006, the Institute has changed its name to the Institute of Lowland
Forestry and Environment (ILFE). ILFE research and developmentactivities are
directed towards both basic and applied research that meets demands of the
research users, such as public enterprises, private forest landowners, urban
residents and policy-makers. ILFE has realized numerous projects related to
the improvement of major tree species (poplars, willows, black locust,
common oak, european beech, norway spruce, wild cherry, etc.) in Serbia and
other former Yugoslavian Republics, projects of the establishment of
protective greenery, forest management plans, rehabilitation of degraded
lands. Moreover, numerous international projects have successfully been
realized with various partners from both Europe and USA.
