The next International Congress of Entomology will be held in Helsinki,
Finland in 2020 July 19-24 (http://ice2020helsinki.fi/)
We have been asked to organise the "Forest and Urban Landscape Entomology"
section, where a number of symposia can be accommodated. We are inviting
proposals for symposia with topics that would fit in this section.
Symposium presentations will be 15 minutes each (including time for
questions), allowing for the possibility of one
‘double-presentation’/keynote talk of 30 minutes (i.e. 20 minutes for the
talk and 10 minutes for questions/discussion). There will be eight
presentations per symposium (or seven if a keynote talk is included).
Proposals to organize a symposium at ICE2020Helsinki should be submitted by
the on-line submission system (
https://submit.peerageofscience.org/conference/ICE_2020) Proposals should
include a brief background/justification, the names of the organizers, a
preliminary list of potential speakers, and any other relevant issues.

DESCRIPTION
Insects and pathogens exploiting tree reproductive structures are considered the most important constraint to the reproductive success of trees during the seed pre-dispersal phase. In a context in which the effects of both climate change and biological invasions are increasingly prevalent to these species, this session will propose experimental and theoretical contributions to biodiversity, biotic interactions and threat assessment and management associated with native and exotic insects and pathogens of tree reproductive structures.
DETAILS
Abstracts will be accepted for both posters and oral presentations. Authors are limited to a maximum of two abstracts as presenting author.

DESCRIPTION: Citizen science is a term for research that involves
non-scientists. Many citizen science programs exist to monitor invasive
forests pests. These programs raise awareness and empower participants to
make observations and critical decisions. Public engagement has exceptional
value for amplifying the opportunities of early detection, but because
people are the primary drivers of invasions, initiatives and investments
that increase awareness and education are also critical. The objectives of
this session are to showcase the diverse methods of public engagement and
provide evidence for the merit of involving the public in research to
defend forest health.
DETAILS: Presentation content can vary as long as it encompasses some
discussion of non-scientist engagement. Abstracts for both posters and oral

There is a M.S. Assistantship in Silviculture and Applied Forest Ecology available for qualified students at the University of Vermont in Burlington, VT. The project will investigate stand and landscape level factors that contribute to the susceptibility of northeastern pitch pine forests to southern pine beetle. The project is a great opportunity for a student interested in forestry, forest ecology, or forest entomology. Field work will be primarily focused in the Central Pine Barrens of Long Island, New York. Please forward this announcement to anyone you think may be interested in this project. I'd like to second Andrea Battisti's invitation to participate and submit symposium proposals for the next International Congress of Entomology in Helsinki, Finland, from 19-24 July 2020 (http://ice2020helsinki.fi/)
This congress is definitely one of the highlights of the entomology conference calendar, and it takes place only every four years (the last one was in Florida in 2016).
Several entomologists involved with IUFRO are coordinating congress sections. Andrea is part of the team coordinating "Forest Entomology and Urban Landscape" (Section 8).
There is also a section on "Invasive Species and Regulatory Entomology" (Section 12), and various others.
Please consider submitting a symposium proposal. Symposium presentations will be 15 minutes each (including time for questions), with the possibility of one 'double-presentation'/keynote talk of 30 minutes (including 10 minutes for questions and discussion). There will be eight presentations per symposium (or seven if a keynote talk is included).

We pride ourselves on offering scientific tree care and have exceptional resources at the Bartlett Tree Research Laboratory, located in Charlotte, NC.The Bartlett Tree Research Laboratory provides technical support, training, and diagnostic support to the 120+ field offices and 1,500+ field staff that make up the Bartlett Tree Expert Company. The Bartlett Plant Diagnostic Laboratory evaluates approximately 8,000 samples per year collected on client properties by Bartlett arborists. The plant disease and insect diagnostician will be responsible for diagnosing plant diseases, insect pests, and abiotic problems, and providing support to all offices in the US and Canada. In addition, the diagnostician will assist in employee training, technical support, presenting at meetings, event planning and travel, and support of research projects.Principle Responsibilities Include: Evaluate approximately 1,500-1,800 plant samples annually using visual observation, microscopy, culture isolation, ELISA testing, PCR, and other methods. Assist in research projects related to diagnostics as needed.Required Qualifications: Master’s degree in plant pathology, entomology (preferred), or a related discipline.
