Dear colleagues,
The deadline has been extended until 31 December 2018.
The next International Congress of Entomology will be held in Helsinki,
Finland in 2020 July 19-24 (http://ice2020helsinki.fi/)
We have been asked to organise the "Forest and Urban Landscape Entomology"
section, where a number of symposia can be accommodated. We are inviting
proposals for symposia with topics that would fit in this section.
Symposium presentations will be 15 minutes each (including time for
questions), allowing for the possibility of one
‘double-presentation’/keynote talk of 30 minutes (i.e. 20 minutes for the
talk and 10 minutes for questions/discussion). There will be eight
presentations per symposium (or seven if a keynote talk is included).
Proposals to organize a symposium at ICE2020Helsinki should be submitted by
the on-line submission system (
https://submit.peerageofscience.org/conference/ICE_2020) Proposals should
include a brief background/justification, the names of the organizers, a
preliminary list of potential speakers, and any other relevant issues.
Deadline: 31 December 2018
Guidelines for proposing symposia are at our website, link:

CALL FOR ABSTRACT FOR A TECHNICAL SESSION FOR THE CONGRESS THEME: BIODIVERSITY, ECOSYSTEM SERVICES AND BIOLOGICAL INVASIONS
TITLE OF THE SESSION : D7b - Biodiversity, biotic interactions and threats to forest ecosystem services associated with tree reproductive structure insects and pathogens in a changing world
ORGANISERS
Thomas Boivint1, Marie-Anne Auger-Rozenberg2 and Olle Rosenberg3
1Mediterranean Forest Research Unit, INRA, France. 2Research Unit of Forest Zoology, France. 3Skogforsk, The Forestry Reasearch Institute, Sweden.
DESCRIPTION
Insects and pathogens exploiting tree reproductive structures are considered the most important constraint to the reproductive success of trees during the seed pre-dispersal phase. In a context in which the effects of both climate change and biological invasions are increasingly prevalent to these species, this session will propose experimental and theoretical contributions to biodiversity, biotic interactions and threat assessment and management associated with native and exotic insects and pathogens of tree reproductive structures.
DETAILS
Abstracts will be accepted for both posters and oral presentations. Authors are limited to a maximum of two abstracts as presenting author.
DEADLINES
Abstract submission deadline: December 31, 2018. Registration and payment deadline: May 31, 2018.
INSTRUCTIONS
You must be registered for the event to submit an abstract, but you may pay for registration later, up to May 31. Registration and abstract submission must be completed online at http://www.iufro2019.com/

TITLE: *Forest health defenders: empowering citizens to protect forests
through research contributions *(Technical Session D6c)
ORGANISERS: Joey Hulbert1, Michelle Cleary2 and Steve Pawson3
*1*Forestry and Agricultural Biotechnology Institute, University of
Pretoria, South Africa.*2*Southern Swedish Forest Research Centre, Swedish
University of Agricultural Sciences, Sweden. *3*Scion, New Zealand.
CONGRESS THEME: Biodiversity, Ecosystem Services and Biological Invasions
DESCRIPTION: Citizen science is a term for research that involves
non-scientists. Many citizen science programs exist to monitor invasive
forests pests. These programs raise awareness and empower participants to
make observations and critical decisions. Public engagement has exceptional
value for amplifying the opportunities of early detection, but because
people are the primary drivers of invasions, initiatives and investments
that increase awareness and education are also critical. The objectives of
this session are to showcase the diverse methods of public engagement and
provide evidence for the merit of involving the public in research to
defend forest health.
DETAILS: Presentation content can vary as long as it encompasses some
discussion of non-scientist engagement. Abstracts for both posters and oral
presentations will be accepted. Authors are limited to a maximum of two
abstracts as presenting author.
DEADLINES: Abstract submission deadline: *December 31, 2018*. Registration
and payment deadline: May 31, 2018.
INSTRUCTIONS: You must be registered for the event to submit an abstract,
but you may pay for registration later, up to May 31. Registration and
abstract submission must be completed online at http://www.iufro2019.com/
CONTACT: Please contact Joey at joey.hulbert(a)fabi.up.ac.za if you have

Are you interested in conducting PhD research in the context of anthropogenic effects that already have and will continue to affect forest insects, like climate warming, increased trade and changes in land use? Would you like to be involved in research investigating strategies to mitigate the impacts of these anthropogenic effects?
At the department of ecology at SLU, Uppsala Sweden, two projects are available:
1) Establishment and spread of invasive forest insects
2) Ecological consequences of novel plant protection strategies
We could be looking to hire more than two PhD students, please do not hesitate to apply if you interested in the general research area but maybe not directly in the two available projects. Please read the advertisement<https://web103.reachmee.com/ext/I017/1114/job?site=7&lang=UK&validator=87e4…> to find how to apply.

Hello everyone,
There is a M.S. Assistantship in Silviculture and Applied Forest Ecology available for qualified students at the University of Vermont in Burlington, VT. The project will investigate stand and landscape level factors that contribute to the susceptibility of northeastern pitch pine forests to southern pine beetle. The project is a great opportunity for a student interested in forestry, forest ecology, or forest entomology. Field work will be primarily focused in the Central Pine Barrens of Long Island, New York. Please forward this announcement to anyone you think may be interested in this project. The attached flyer contains more information and point of contact (Tony D'Amato, UVM).
Thanks,
Kevin

Dear friends and colleagues,
I'd like to second Andrea Battisti's invitation to participate and submit symposium proposals for the next International Congress of Entomology in Helsinki, Finland, from 19-24 July 2020 (http://ice2020helsinki.fi/)
This congress is definitely one of the highlights of the entomology conference calendar, and it takes place only every four years (the last one was in Florida in 2016).
Several entomologists involved with IUFRO are coordinating congress sections. Andrea is part of the team coordinating "Forest Entomology and Urban Landscape" (Section 8).
There is also a section on "Invasive Species and Regulatory Entomology" (Section 12), and various others.
Please consider submitting a symposium proposal. Symposium presentations will be 15 minutes each (including time for questions), with the possibility of one 'double-presentation'/keynote talk of 30 minutes (including 10 minutes for questions and discussion). There will be eight presentations per symposium (or seven if a keynote talk is included).
See https://ice2020helsinki.fi/call-for-symposia/ for more information.
Submission of symposium proposals is via the on-line system at https://submit.peerageofscience.org/conference/ICE_2020
With your proposal please include a justification (why the chosen symposium topic is of interest, etc., (600 characters)), potential speakers and tentative titles, plans for symposium sponsorships, plans for publications or other outputs, etc., (3000 characters)).
Note, that the deadline for submission of symposium proposals is 30 October 2018, so not too long to go.
