All Governments, relevant institutions and organizations are encouraged to submit nominations. Nominations may be submitted by organizations or institutions, regardless of whether they are admitted to the Plenary of IPBES as an observer. Please help us disseminate this call for nominations of fellows widely to relevant institutions and organizations, such as universities or research institutions. The IPBES Fellowship Programme, which is part of a larger capacity-building portfolio of activities, targets early career experts who wish to gain experience by participating in the work of IPBES. Selected fellows will take part as authors in the chapter of the assessment they are selected for. Fellows will attend author meetings and receive training to gain an in-depth understanding of the IPBES assessment processes. Fellows will also be paired up with a mentor for the assessment period. Nominated fellows should have expertise related to the themes and skills required for the chapters of the assessment as set out in its scoping document (available here<https://ipbes.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=5da0fed71c7e4399fb28ab549&i…>). They should be experts on invasive alien species within one or more of the following disciplines: natural sciences, social sciences or the humanities; be indigenous and local knowledge experts or have expertise in indigenous and local knowledge systems; or be policy experts and practitioners. Governments and organizations are invited to nominate experts from a diversity of disciplinary backgrounds and gender, in order to ensure a balanced team of fellows. Dear friends and colleagues, In case you are not aware of it, the abstract submission deadline for the IUFRO Congress 2019 in Curitiba, Brazil (29 Sept. - 5 Oct. 2019) is the end of December (31 Dec. 2019). Also, I'd like to wish you all happy holidays and all the best for the new year. I look forward to seeing you at the IUFRO Congress or one of the upcoming IUFRO Division 7 conferences. Finally, I have some news to share: After 21 years in New Zealand (and 20 of those with the New Zealand Forest Research Institute / 'Scion'), I will relocate to Switzerland at the beginning of February 2019 to take up a position with the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL, near Zurich. IUFRO 2019 World Congress: Session on biological control in plantations

See below information on the session and instructions to submit your abstract. ORGANIZERS: Leonardo Barbosa, Brett Hurley and Carlos Wilcken CONGRESS THEME: Biodiversity, Ecosystem Services and Biological Invasions SCOPE OF THE SESSION: Biological control is one of the priority strategies traditionally used for exotic forest insect pests. Today many biological control programs have been implemented throughout the world, including in forest plantations. In many cases, exotic forest insect pests are shared between multiple countries and there are thus opportunities to share knowledge and experience on biological control programmes. This session examines biocontrol programmes in different countries and on different insect pests. Presentations include traditional approaches to develop biocontrol programmes, the use of new technologies, and the involvement of different stakeholders including forest industry, government and business. Fwd: Oozing Black Spots on Limbs of White Oak

Hello forpathers and forenters, Below are a couple of pictures sent to me by a local arborist, wondering what’s going on on the main limbs of a white oak. I am contacting you because I find that this kind of very localized bark discoloration/staining is quite common in oaks. I’ve always suspected these were very small, localized infections by some species of Phytophthora, like citricola, citrophthora, etc. but I’ve never verified. Whatever it is, it seems to me it never goes anywhere, i.e. the lesions remain very small and do not have any serious impact on the host. Does anyone else actually know what these are? It would be of great interest to me personally, in addition to providing an answer to the arborist. Cheers! International Congress of Entomology: extension of the deadline for symposium proposals

Dear colleagues, The deadline has been extended until 31 December 2018. The next International Congress of Entomology will be held in Helsinki, Finland in 2020 July 19-24 (http://ice2020helsinki.fi/). We have been asked to organise the "Forest and Urban Landscape Entomology" section, where a number of symposia can be accommodated. We are inviting proposals for symposia with topics that would fit in this section. Symposium presentations will be 15 minutes each (including time for questions), allowing for the possibility of one ‘double-presentation’/keynote talk of 30 minutes (i.e. 20 minutes for the talk and 10 minutes for questions/discussion). There will be eight presentations per symposium (or seven if a keynote talk is included). Proposals to organize a symposium at ICE2020Helsinki should be submitted by the on-line submission system ( https://submit.peerageofscience.org/conference/ICE_2020). Proposals should include a brief background/justification, the names of the organizers, a preliminary list of potential speakers, and any other relevant issues.
