Dear colleagues,
The next International Congress of Entomology will be held in
Helsinki, Finland in 2020 July 19-24 (http://ice2020helsinki.fi/)
We have been asked to organise the "Forest Entomology and Urban
Landscape" section, where a number of symposia can be accommodated. We
are inviting proposals for symposia with topics that would fit in this
section.
We suggest that the IUFRO members in entomology could propose symposia
in this framework so that different aspects of the discipline will be
addressed. So we invite WP leaders and deputies to propose topics,
although proposals are welcome also by other people.
Symposium presentations will be 15 minutes each (including time for
questions), allowing for the possibility of one
‘double-presentation’/keynote talk of 30 minutes (i.e. 20 minutes for
the talk and 10 minutes for questions/discussion). There will be eight
presentations per symposium (or seven if a keynote talk is included).
Proposals to organize a symposium at ICE2020Helsinki should be
submitted by the on-line submission system
(https://submit.peerageofscience.org/conference/ICE_2020) Proposals
should include a brief background/justification, the names of the
organizers, a preliminary list of potential speakers, and any other
relevant issues.
Deadline: 31 October 2018.
Andrea Battisti, Nathan Havill, Dmitry Musolin, Heli Viiri,
the "Forest Entomology and Urban Landscape" section conveners.

Dear Friends and colleagues
(subscribers of mailing lists Div7, RG7.01, RG7.02 and RG7.03)
Attached is the latest newsletter covering happenings over the last 12 months as well as upcoming meetings in the Forest Health Division and the three Research Groups (RG 7.01 - Air Pollution and Climate Change, RG 7.02 - Pathology, and RG 7.03 - Entomology).
Please let us know if we overlooked any events, and please share information for our next newsletter.
Apart from all the upcoming Division 7 conferences and meetings that are listed in the attached report, I'd like to draw your attention to the abstract submission dates for the next IUFRO World Congress in Curitiba, Brazil, 29 September - 5 October, 2019. Congress website: www.iufro2019.com<http://www.iufro2019.com>
Abstract submission was planned to start at 15 September 2018 but this has been postponed because of the large number of session proposals that were received, which required some consolidation.
Abstract submission should be available soon, and the abstract submission deadline is still planned to be 15 December 2018.
I know that many Division 7 contributors submitted session proposals. The interest in the congress and in organising sessions has been amazing. More than twice as many session proposals were received than can be accommodated at the congress. Unfortunately, this necessitated that some proposals that addressed similar topics were merged by the committee, and I think most have now been informed about the outcome. Someone mentioned that "arranged marriages can be good marriages" and I hope that those who are affected will be able to see some positives in this or at least be able to live with the decision. I should mention that I was not responsible for the merging decisions. Anyway, there is still some discussion about certain cases where the merging may not have been ideal. Please let me know if you are not satisfied with the outcome and if you feel strongly about this. My email is eckehard.brockerhoff(a)scionresearch.com<mailto:eckehard.brockerhoff@scionresearch.com>
I look forward to seeing you at an upcoming IUFRO meeting, and my best wishes for your research and other endeavours.
Kind regards,
Ecki Brockerhoff
Coordinator, IUFRO Division 7 - Forest Health

Dear colleagues,
We are advertising a postdoc position in Forest Entomology and a
postdoc position in Forest Pathology at the University of Natural
Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU) in Vienna (Austria).
For the announcement of the Forest Entomology position (in German and
English) see the following links:
https://www.boku.ac.at/fileadmin/data/H01000/mitteilungsblatt/MB_2017_18/MB…https://www.boku.ac.at/fileadmin/data/H01000/mitteilungsblatt/MB_2017_18/MB…
For the announcement of the Forest Pathology position (in German and

The positions are limited to 6 years, plus the potential option of a
tenured position after this period.
It is important to stress that day-to-day work and teaching at BOKU
University is much based on language skills in German. Likewise, the
positions include teaching responsibilities in German. German language
skills are thus a short-term requirement.
I encourage interested candidates to apply. Likewise, please circulate
the announcements to potential applicants. Deadline for applications is
27 September 2018.

Hello forest entomology colleagues,
We are recruiting for a two-year postdoc position at the University of
California Davis (USA). The postdoc will be co-advised by Mike Springborn,
and Andrew Liebhold of the U.S. Forest Service (USFS). The position is part
of a USFS-funded initiative on “Global Socioeconomic Drivers of Insect
Invasions”. The postdoc will work closely with an interdisciplinary working
group of economists, ecologists and entomologists collaborating in the
analysis of historical insect establishments worldwide in relation to
economic and biogeographic factors. The working group is sponsored by the
National Socio-Environmental Synthesis Center (SESYNC) located in
Annapolis, MD. The central goal of this project is to explore the
socioeconomic drivers of historical insect invasions around the world to
better understand the pathways by which species have been transported and
the forces responsible for these invasions.
A full description of the position and how to apply can be found at
http://bit.do/springborn_post_doc. Review of applicants will begin
September 21, 2018 and continue until the position is filled. The
preferred start date is fall of 2018 or as soon as possible; the exact
start date is flexible.
Please share with all who might have interest.
Sincerely,
Mike Springborn Sandy Liebhold

Dear Colleagues,
Preparations for the PREPSYS conference in Vienna (1-4 October, 2018) are proceeding well and we have filled the oral presentation programme for the meeting (copy of draft programme is attached).
There is still room at the BFW venue and would urge potential participants to register soon in order to be sure of attending. We are also very keen to have poster presentations which will be available for the whole conference and featured in a mixer session to enable the presenters to describe their work and discuss the findings. Details for registration and submission of posters are in the attached circular; essentially, please provide a title and short abstract along with your registration details by 14 September.
We look forward to a stimulating conference and to welcoming you to the beautiful city of Vienna.
Hugh Evans, Mariella Marzano and Gernot Hoch

Deepa Pureswaran is the local organiser and she put together a nice
programme attached to this message.
A website will be launched with the second circular.
For a better organization it would be good to know in advance those
who are interested to attend. Please contact the local organisers and
