CALL for information by the International Forest Quarantine Research Group from NPPOs and Forest Research Organisations
The International Forest Quarantine Research Group (IFQRG) has requested the IPPC Secretariat to circulate this e-mail to help them launch a call for information on forest quarantine issues and requests National and Regional Plant Protection Organizations (NPPO and RPPOs) as well as Forest Research Organisations to respond. Survey closes 31 August 2018.
The IFQRG has provided advice to the Commission on Phytosanitary Measures (CPM) and works closely with the Technical Panel for Forest Quarantine (TPFQ) providing research data to support some standards. In addition, it has provided information used for the development of IPPC Guides and training material.
Established in 2004, IFQRG provides a mechanism where critical forestry quarantine issues can be addressed through discussion and collaborative research. It serves to bring together scientists and phytosanitary officials to foster multi-disciplinary approaches to forest quarantine-related problems of global significance.
The group has three main function:
1. Advisory body: providing scientific analysis and review of global forestry related phytosanitary issues and new information
2. Discussion forum: providing a forum for the discussion and clarification of key forestry issues related to the phytosanitary implications of global trade
3. Research coordination: Identifying and undertaking collaborative scientific research aimed at high priority forestry quarantine questions
IFQRG is undertaking a global review of key forest quarantine issues as part of a strategy setting process to inform the future IFQRG research priorities.
We request that National and Regional Plant Protection Organizations (NPPOs and RPPOs) respond to this CALL for information and circulate this call to appropriate national research institutions that have a focus on forest quarantine issues and request that these institutions to also contribute their own independent assessments.
An online survey will be used to collect the data. If individual questions are not of relevance to you, please skip the questions as appropriate. The survey will close on the 31 August 2018.
The survey was designed by scientists representing Oceania (Stephen PAWSON), Europe (Rene ESCHEN), South America (Juan CORLEY), North America (Ron MACK and Adnan UZUNOVIC), South Asia (Kavita GUPTA), and Africa (John Richard MBWAMBO). A synthesis of the survey will be presented for discussion at the 15th meeting of IFQRG to be held in Rome, 1 to 5 October 2018 ( http://www.ippc.int/en/events/event/670/ ).

Sadly, John Bain, a long standing New Zealand forest entomologist, passed away earlier this week. John started back in the late 1960s and over the years worked on a number of insect groups, covering wasps to wood borers. It was John's broad and deep knowledge that distinguished his long career. John shared that knowledge willingly and took great pride in training others, especially young researchers, in insect identification, pest risk analysis, forest insect ecology and taxonomy.
John will be remembered nationally and overseas for his skills in cerambycid identification, particularly of larvae which is considerably tricky. He was also well known overseas for his work on other wood- and bark-borers and gypsy moth. He made a significant contribution to the successful eradication of white spotted tussock moth and painted apple moth and the very nearly successful Dutch elm disease eradication campaign.
Amongst those that had the privilege to work with John they will remember- a brilliant sense of humour and quick wit, an aggressive bowler who played business house cricket, a give it everything prop on the rugby field, and a person with a keen interest in social interaction who people gravitated to. John will be missed by many.

The IUFRO World Congress will be held in Curitiba, Brazil 29 Sept. - 5
Oct., 2019. This will be a large Congress encompassing all aspects of
forest research. Proposals for organized scientific session can be
submitted at the Congress website http://www.iufro2019.com . The IUFRO
Congress is a great opportunity for organizing interdisciplinary sessions
and it is a unique venue for holding sessions on forest insects. We

The Garnas lab (http://mypages.unh.edu/garnaslab) seeks a highly motivated graduate student (MSc or PhD; PhD preferred) for a USDA-APHIS funded project to advance understanding of how chemical and morphological traits vary across tree size and species, and how such variation may influence Emerald ash borer (EAB) oviposition behavior, larval performance and survival, and parasitism by native and introduced natural enemies. Key aspects of the project include the systematic characterization of defensive compounds across ash species and tree sizes using pyrolysis-GCMS and the design and implementation of experiments to examine how chemical and morphological trait variation influences EAB and its key biological control agents. Successful candidates must have a keen interest in plant defensive chemistry and associated consequences for plant-insect interactions. Some basic chemistry background (e.g., coursework or lab experience) is preferred but not required. Opportunities for related ecological modeling and/or genetic analyses also exist, particularly in the case of PhD applicants. The position will be housed in the Department of Natural Resources and the Environment (NREN; https://colsa.unh.edu/nren) or in the Natural Resources and Earth Systems Science program (NRESS; https://www.unh.edu/nressphd) for MSc v. PhD students respectively. Position ideally begins in Fall 2018.

Postdoctoral Scholar in Forest Entomology
The Forest Entomology Laboratory at Purdue University seeks a Postdoctoral Scholar to advance ongoing research focusing on the integrated pest management of Thousand Cankers Disease (TCD). This disease complex is caused by the association of a fungus (Geosmithia morbida) and the walnut twig beetle (Pityophthorus juglandis). TCD is responsible for the widespread death of black walnut (Juglans nigra) in the western United States, and was recently discovered in the East, where it threatens the health of this important timber species throughout its native range. This is a full-time, two-year appointment based in West Lafayette, IN.
The specific objectives of this study are to evaluate the efficacy of trap trees, semiochemicals and the conservative use of insecticides to reduce WTB populations, while protecting high-value crop trees and minimizing the chemical footprint of walnut plantations.
Responsibilities:
* Work with Principal Investigators to establish field evaluations and sampling regimes.
* Lead field and associated laboratory efforts related to the research objectives. Some overnight travel will be required.
* Develop and present (written and oral) products suitable for scientific audiences explaining the purpose and results of project.
* Create scientific manuscripts based on research that are suitable for publication.
* Participate in scientific meetings and engage with colleagues and collaborators pursuing related research questions.
* Provide guidance and assistance to technicians, students, and others carrying out related work.
Preferred Qualifications:
* A Ph.D. in Entomology, Forest Protection, Ecology or related fields (Ph.D. required).
* Experience designing, organizing, and managing research projects involving insects, trees, or fungi.
* Expertise and experience in chemical ecology and management of insects in forest systems.
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work with an interdisciplinary team.
Preferred start date is Summer 2018. The salary is set at $48,500 per year plus benefits.
