JUDGING CRITERIA [
https://www.worldbambooworkshop.com/copy-of-competition]
The evaluation process for entries to the 4th WBW International Bamboo Pavilion Design
Competition is based on criteria adapted to creative, technical, social, economic, and
ecological requirements. These criteria are not comprehensive and not all criteria are
applicable to each design. They simply provide an orientation framework and basis for
judging, which is complemented by each individual juror’s expertise and professional
background.
Each member of the Jury is passionately committed to providing a fair and unbiased
evaluation of all entries. The Judging Committee is a selected panel of industry experts
from around the world, qualified in recognizing excellence in architecture, eco-design,
and sustainability. Their talents and contributions to their respective fields are
genuinely aspirational and all jurors are in leading or founder positions within their
organizations.
The judging criteria include the following:
[
https://www.worldbambooworkshop.com/copy-of-competition]
· Innovation — does the design stand out, provide something new and unique, or
supplement/improve upon a previous concept?
· Aesthetics — artistic value of the form, shape, color, texture, finishing,
engineering, material used, etc.
· Functionality — ease of use, safety and maintenance.
· Durability — the quality and longevity of the design.
· Impact — the benefits delivered to the user and/or society by the design.
· Utility — does the design meet the intended purpose and needs of the user?
· Ecological compatibility — potential environmental and/or ecological impact
· Emotional quotient (EQ) — in addition to fulfilling its practical purpose, will the
design create a sense of enjoyment and satisfaction?
· Feasibility of production — how realistic is it, technically and economically, to
bring this design to production and use? Consider these issues regarding the design:
1) Clarity of structural concepts (primary structure is sound and stable, static concepts
are distinguished and thought-through)
2) The bamboo poles are well-dimensioned, and the support distance is reasonably
integrated in the design (whatever species and size of poles has yet to be documented)
3) Simplicity and elegance reign over complexity and costly designs (strong curves must be
heat bent and are expensive, or culms are cut and later reinforced with resins and glass
fibers)
4) Protection by design principles like big boots and big hat (or membranes) reign over
sculptural design under weather exposure and protective paints.
5) “Simple” joinery like dowels, bolts or fish-mouth and rope reigns over technically
complex joint-systems (conus joints, steel-plates and laser-cut fittings)
Scoring
The Judging Committee will use a scoring scale between 1-10 points. Jury members are
assigned categories based on their specific backgrounds and design expertise. All projects
are viewed and judged randomly and anonymously to ensure unbiased and fair judging.
