Canada Impact+ Research Chairs in Climate-related Disasters and Community Resilience

The Natural Resources Institute in the Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of Environment, Earth and Resources at the University of Manitoba invites applications for a Canada Impact+ Research Chairs in Community-Based Resource Management and the work of the former Disaster Research Institute. A Canada Impact+ Research Chair is one of the most prestigious international awards globally, providing Chairholders and their research teams with an award of up to $8 million over eight years ($1 million per year). In addition, there is potential for a four-year extension at 50% of the initial award value per year. This extension will be determined by an external review of the award in Year 7.
Successful nominees will be expected to start their position at the University of Manitoba within 12 months of accepting the award. The successful candidate will be appointed to a full-time tenured position at the rank of Full Professor, or at the rank of Associate Professor with an opportunity to apply for promotion to Full Professor within two years of starting their appointment. Salary will be based on the candidate’s qualifications and experience, in accordance with the University of Manitoba Faculty Association (UMFA) collective agreement. The position will be provided with a start-up package and opportunities to compete for additional equipment funding through the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI).
The focus of this position is climate-related disasters and risks, and their management, governance, and/or community resilience. The research should result in transformational and translational impacts on Canada and beyond.
While this is a research-intensive position, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to teach and mentor undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate students in the Institute, Faculty, and the University.
Only candidates who are internationally based (both working and residing outside of Canada) at the time of the intake’s application deadline are eligible to apply.
Expected start date of appointment: Within 12 months of the award date (September 2026).

We are pleased to announce some updates regarding the third 'From Forests to Heritage' conference. This will take place alongside the '2026 World Wood Day Symposium' and the '8th IUFRO Forest Products Culture Colloquium' from 19 to 22 May 2026 in Klagenfurt.
The deadline for submissions is approaching – 31 January. This deadline will not be postponed. Please be on time!
We will contact all those who submitted a proposal as soon as possible.
At the same time, we will begin the registration process and create a new page on the 'From Forests to Heritage' website (https://fromforeststoheritage.dendro.at/)
You can now start booking your accommodation at https://fromforeststoheritage.dendro.at/. 'Visit Klagenfurt' has made some reservations, which you can take advantage of. These must be made by 16 March 2026.
You are also welcome to browse the available excursions.
We are currently setting up some enjoyable evening events, and more information will be available on the website soon.
The conference venue has a capacity of 120 people. If we receive more abstract proposals or registrations than there are places available, entry will be allocated on a 'first come, first served' basis.

IUFRO Division 5 Conference 2027 - Save the Date

Dear colleagues:
IUFRO Division 5 "Forst Products" would like to announce the next All-Division 5 conference "Future Forest Use: Advancing Wood Science and Forest Products for a Circular Bioeconomy" which will be jointly organised in cooperation with the International Society of Wood Science and Technology (SWST) and the Estonian University of Life Science.
The conference will be held
in: Tartu, Estonia at the Estonian National Museum
from: 30 May - 3 June 2027
This IUFRO Division 5 Forest Products Conference will bring together experts to discuss the future of sustainable forestry, wood science, forest products and the circular bioeconomy.
The conference will address several key topics, including:
* Future Wood: Climate smart forest management and silviculture for forest tree growth, wood yield and quality.
* Wood Science: From wood anatomy to the analytics of mechanical, physical and chemical properties.
* Wood Valorization: Innovative approaches of wood engineering and wood technologies to convert biomass into energy, chemicals, fibers, and high-performance composites.
* Non-Wood Products: Exploring the value of medicinal and edible components of forest crops.
It goes beyond wood, emphasizing the efficient, science-based use of forest resources for the good of mankind.
In addition to scientific sessions, the program will include post-conference tours.

Our event
The 24th International Nondestructive Testing and Evaluation of Wood Symposium serves as a global forum for those involved in the nondestructive testing and evaluation of wood, wood-based materials, wood products, and trees. This event will bring together the international research community, users of various nondestructive testing technologies, equipment developers and manufacturers, representatives from government agencies, and other groups to share research findings and showcase new products and technologies.
As part of the symposium program, participants will enjoy a visit to the Vicksburg National Military Park (https://www.nps.gov/vick/index.htm) a beautiful and historic site that houses the USS Cairo-one of seven shallow-draft City Class river ironclads.

Dear colleagues,
The final abstract submission deadline for the ISCHP 2026 conference of 20 January 2026 is approaching, and the Organizing Committee would like to share some important information about the conference.
The list of keynote speakers is already available on our website. We are pleased to announce five distinguished researchers from different backgrounds, carefully selected to provide attendees with engaging talks on diverse topics (see https://ischp26.co.za/keynote-speakers/)
Following the conference, all accepted and presented papers will be published in a book of proceedings. In the past, a special issue in the European Journal of Wood and Wood Products was dedicated to the conference, and we are in discussion with the editor to see if that will be possible again. More details on this will be provided soon.
In less than a month, the Scientific Committee will begin the abstract evaluation process and will inform authors once feedback from the reviewers is available.

This is a call for abstracts for the 9th edition of ISCHP – the International Scientific Conference on Hardwood Products. This will be a joint conference with the Wood Quality Modelling Working Party (IUFRO 5.01.04) where there will also be parallel sessions related to wood quality modelling.
The conference will be hosted by Stellenbosch University, South Africa, between 8-11 September 2026 with a pre-conference tour from 5-7 September, and a welcome reception on the 7th of September. The main objective of this conference is to bring together the scientific and research communities working on hardwood products as well as wood quality modelling. International experts, scientists, government and industry representatives, suppliers and customers are invited to discuss recent progress and innovative work in these valuable research areas.
ISCHP 2026 will address the following main topics:
• Hardwood species, properties and quality;
• Hardwood processing and products;
• Structural and non-structural applications (connections, heritage structures, architecture, markets);
• Wood quality modelling.
The abstract should not exceed 300 words. Abstracts should be submitted electronically through the following link until the 26th of November 2025: https://ischp26.co.za/submissions/ .

The EGU General Assembly 2026, held in Vienna, Austria & online from 3-8 May 2026, brings together geoscientists from all over the world to one meeting covering all disciplines of the Earth, planetary, and space sciences. The EGU aims to provide a forum where scientists, especially early career researchers, can present their work and discuss their ideas with experts in all fields of geoscience.
