Project description
Climate change has already altered the phenology of plants and organisms at
higher trophic levels. Among plants, this has resulted in a temporal shift
towards earlier bud burst and/or flowering, and among plant-feeding insects
in earlier emergences. But more radical changes can happen than shifts in
phenology: with increasing temperature, species may increase the number of
generations per year (voltinism). Such changes may be extremely important
from an ecological and evolutionary perspective, as an additional generation
may accelerate both population growth and rate of adaptation, and may also
lead to temporal mismatches between interacting species. However, we lack
insight in how climate affects the voltinism of species within natural
multitrophic communities, and how this in turn may shape food web structure
and dynamics.
The overarching aim of the PhD project is to understand how spatial and
temporal variation in climate affects the voltinism of a diverse community
of herbivores and parasitoids on oak, and the consequences for food web
structure and dynamics. The project will combine several approaches: i)
fields surveys describing the spatial and temporal patterns in voltinism of
a community of herbivores and parasitoids on oak, ii) heating experiments to
disentangle how climatic variation (spring, summer and autumn heating)
drives the voltinism of, and synchrony between, herbivores and parasitoids,
and iii) detailed climate-chamber and laboratory experiments on five
selected species to probe the impact of voltinism on herbivore and
parasitoid preference and performance.

Read an interview with Division 7 Coordinator Eckehard Brockerhoff of Scion
(New Zealand Forest Research Institute) about the work in IUFRO Division 7
and the All-Division Meeting at the IUFRO 125th Anniversary Congress.
Division 7 deals with topics that are all concerned with forest and tree
health, and the causes of interactions between air pollution and climate
change, tree pathogens, and tree-feeding insects.
Dr Brockerhoff pointed out that biological invasions and invasive species
have been occupying much of this Division's time. The impacts of invasions
are so pervasive and fundamental, and there are no simple solutions. They
are an unwanted consequence of international trade and the movement of
people from country to country.
"At this Congress we've learned, among other things, about the progress in
our understanding of what makes these invasive species so aggressive and how
we can better predict the types of species that behave in this way," Dr
Brockerhoff said.

Dear colleague,
As many of you will know, the number of emerging pests and diseases of woody plants (i.e. species that have never previously been recorded outside their native continent) is continuously increasing. Early warning of these potential invaders before they arrive can be based on surveys of sentinel plantings and nurseries, and of arboreta. However, such surveys will necessarily face the presence of organisms and symptoms that have never been observed before by the surveyors.
To facilitate the identification of the most likely causal agents of damage to woody plants in situations where the exact identity of such agents is unknown, a field guide for the identification of damage on woody sentinel plants has now been published. The book is now available as a free open-access e-book under the following link. No hard copies of the book will be sold. http://www.cabi.org/cabebooks/ebook/20173265430
This guide is intended as an aid for managers of sentinel plantings, botanical gardens or arboreta, as well as phytosanitary inspectors, who may have knowledge of common pests and diseases of woody plants, but may not know the likely cause of damage that they have not encountered before. It aims to provide a tentative identification of relatively broad groups of organisms and not definitive identification of the causal agents.
There are chapters that explain how to use the guide, followed by keys (for different organs of conifer and broadleaf species) to guide the user to the relevant sections of the book, based on the questions entomologists and pathologists ask themselves when looking at a damaged or diseased tree in a fashion similar to how a doctor interrogates a patient to arrive at a diagnosis. The largest part of the book is devoted to the description and illustration of damage types and typical causes of the observed damage.
The book is an output of COST Action FP1401 - A global network of nurseries as early warning system against alien tree pests - "Global Warning" (www.ibles.pl/cost<http://www.ibles.pl/cost>).

René.

Dear friends and colleagues,
(Div. 7 list servers and presenters in Div. 7 (Forest Health) sessions at the upcoming IUFRO 125th Anniversary Congress)
Social evening on 18 Sept.
Thanks very much to all those who already replied previously. We can confirm that this will go ahead on Monday, 18 Sept. 2017, starting from about 7:30 or 8:00 pm / 19:30 or 20:00 hrs.
There will be a change to a nicer venue. This is in a suburb of Freiburg that can be reached easily by tram (a 10-minute tram ride, with a tram leaving every 10 minutes; more details to come in the next few days).
This promises to be a very nice opportunity to socialise in the beer garden outdoors or in the hall inside (depending on the weather). There will be local beers and other drinks available, including non-alcoholic drinks, as well as dinner, including several affordable options. Dr Horst Delb, a local forest entomologist, is kindly helping organise this. Please note, this is not restricted to presenters; anyone interested in the Forest Health Division and their partners and friends can come along.
Important: We need to confirm the approximate number of participants. If you would like to join us, or if you have any questions about this, please email me (eckehard.brockerhoff(a)scionresearch.com)
Div. 7, Forest Health, business meeting of on 19 Sept.
This meeting will be of interest to anyone who would like to know a little more about IUFRO, the Forest Health groups and their activities, upcoming conferences, opportunities to discuss relevant topics, become involved, etc. Attendance of this is not limited to office holders and, in fact, everyone is welcome to come along.
This is scheduled for Tuesday, 19 Sept. 2017, from 8 pm / 20:00 hrs in Room KG I - 1199 at the University of Freiburg. It is listed in the congress programme. Please mark this in your diaries.
Please send me an email if you have any questions or suggestions (which we welcome).
We look forward to seeing you soon at the congress!
Kind regards,
Ecki Brockerhoff
