Our colleague and friend Cathie Reeves from Scion, Rotorua, New Zealand communicated to me that a job position is opened since a few weeks for a Research Leader in Plant Propagation and Automation, in particular the responsibility for the Tissue Culture Lab and the Scion Nursery (see attached job description).

The NFT Working Party has been publishing the NFT News which provides a platform for members to share their recent research findings and as a source of information on scientific meetings and recent literature published on nitrogen fixing trees and shrubs. So far 12 issues have been published since 1998.
It is proposed to bring out the combined 13th and 14th issues of NFT News during July 2017. The newsletter will be hosted in the website of IUFRO. We are inviting contributions for the forthcoming issue of the NFT News on or before 31st May 2017. Contributions may focus on activities that highlight research, promotion and development of nitrogen fixing trees and shrubs. The newsletter will also carry announcements on new information sources, useful websites and upcoming relevant events.
Contributions to the newsletter may be written in a simple and reader-friendly language to interest a diverse audience. They should contain new information and not a concise version of an article published already. Please limit your contributions to 1500 words in a Word file. Inclusion of good-quality photographs (at least 300 dpi) is encouraged. Photographs, graphs and other illustrations may please be sent as separate files.

The Society of American Foresters is excited to begin accepting applications for the 2017 Gregory Award. The Gregory Award seeks to mark the achievements of Bob and Ann Gregory and further their interest in international relations by providing economic assistance to outstanding students or professionals from outside of the US and Canada to attend the SAF Convention and have meaningful engagement with foresters on the North American continent.
Thanks to the continued generosity of the Gregory family and SAF members, this award has been expanded to bring two promising individuals to the SAF Convention each year. This year’s convention will take place in Albuquerque, New Mexico on November 15-19. The award includes complimentary registration and $2,000 (US dollars) that may be utilized for travel, lodging, and tickets to SAF convention events or technical field tours. SAF will work with successful applicants to allocate the funds in the most useful manner.

Marcus Wallenberg Prize 2017
Better quality and higher productivity are the incentives for molecular genetics of forest trees. Ronald R. Sederoff is awarded the 2017 Marcus Wallenberg Prize for his breakthroughs in developing methods for gene discovery in conifer species and exploiting new breeding technologies for improved properties.
Professor Ronald R. Sederoff, North Carolina State University, USA, was one of the first scientists in the field of molecular genetics of forest trees. From the early 1990s he was involved in almost all the early studies on genetic modification of conifer trees, quantitative genetic studies and later also tree genomics.
Innovations for the forest industry
Ronald R. Sederoff has explained that the purpose of his work is to better understand the biology of forest trees and to use this information to accelerate breeding.
He established in 1988 the Forest Biotechnology Group at North Carolina State University to concentrate on the genetic basis of quantitative traits in trees.
Until then tree breeding had focused on understanding the inheritance of different traits, without directly caring about the actual genes that determined these traits. Ronald R. Sederoff was one of the first tree geneticists trying to link biological properties with genetic information in trees, so called genetic mapping, using the newest markers available to identify important properties like rust resistance, tree growth and wood quality. His group has been actively working on sequencing pine and American chestnut genomes.
His group has also specialized on the molecular basis of the structure of wood to investigate the biochemical and genetic basis of cell wall formation. Their focus is on the pathway for lignin biosynthesis and cell wall structural proteins.
Ronald R. Sederoff has provided the forestry sector with new methods and applications for tree breeding and valuable information to be used in the restoration of for example the American chestnut, which is today on the verge of extinction due to a devastating fungal disease.

Dear colleagues,
If you are aware of legislation in your country on the production of plants of forest species by micropropagation (both by organogenesis and somatic embryogenesis) and commercialization of this type of clonal plant material, we would appreciate very much receiving such information.
Particularly we are interested in knowing if there are norms regulating the maximum number of multiplication cycles that are allowed in the schemes of production.
