To recognize the contribution women make to forest health research, we invite you to three online sessions highlighting the work of 21 women. The speakers will present their research on topics related to forest pests and pathogens, forest ecology, invasion biology and climate change. Four of our speakers from Benin, Nepal, New Zealand and the USA will also share their perspectives on gender-related challenges in forestry, research and higher education. passing of Mike McManus

With sadness, I pass along news of the death of Dr. Michael McManus yesterday. Mike was a research scientist with the US Forest Service in Hamden, Connecticut for his entire career, beginning in 1966 and including his status as an active emeritus scientist up to the present. During his career with the US Forest Service, most of Mike’s research focused on Lymantria dispar, its dispersal behavior, ecology, host-pathogen interactions, and management. He played a crucial role both as a research manager and in conceiving several large integrated management programs that targeted this insect. During the last 35 years he was the main organizer of the USDA Interagency Forum on Invasive Species which is held every year in Annapolis, Maryland. Right up until the time of his death, Mike was actively involved in planning the program for the upcoming meeting in January 2024. Mike was also very active in IUFRO and other international activities. He founded working party 7.03.06 “Integrated Management of Forest Defoliating Insects” and led this group for over 10 years. During that period, he was a crucial player in the organization of several conferences in North America and Europe. In 2010 Mike was presented the George Varley Award for Achievement in Forest Entomology recognizing him for his many career achievements. I know that many of you were acquaintances or friends with Mike. As in my case, Mike was very helpful in the careers of many individuals and building connections among scientists, especially those in different countries. Division 7-themed Post Congress Tour for IUFRO 2024

Dear FORPATH and FORENT colleagues, If you have been looking at the IUFRO 2024 World Congress website since June you may have noticed that we have put together an attractive Division 7-themed tour that many of you may be interested to join in the days after the Congress. It will be a 6 day, 5 night excursion going from Stockholm south, ending up in Malmö where people can easily and conveniently depart from Copenhagen International airport. The tour is geared more to forest scientists and will showcase many pest/pathogen/extreme climate and other management issues relevant to Scandinavian forests. There will of course be some touristic elements included and we promise excellent scenery enroute. Highlights of the tour are presented in the attached PDF. New Paper: Attracting and retaining women in forest entomology and forest pathology.

Automatisch generierte Beschreibung]Inclusion of women in the forest entomology and forest pathology workforce has been a difficult journey. While policies and resources exist for organizations and departments to increase diversity and retain women, there still exist large gaps in gender parity at forest research institutions globally. It is imperative that we better understand the barriers that exist for women in forest entomology and pathology so that more inclusive environments can be created that are welcoming towards women and other underrepresented groups. To assess these barriers and subsequent opportunities for improvement, we surveyed forest entomology and pathology professionals globally to ask about their experiences in the workforce. We also provide examples of trends in gender representation at relevant institutions. Barriers to success for women and men were very different; women experienced more barriers related to family caretaking while men experienced more barriers related to funding opportunities. These differences show where opportunities lie to better attract, support, and retain women in forest entomology and forest pathology.
