Dear colleague,
We wish to remind you that the deadline of 31 July for early registration for the IUFRO meeting, “Biological Invasions in Forests: Trade, Ecology and Management” is rapidly approaching.
The conference will be held 20-24 September, 2021 on the campus of the Czech University of Life Sciences and COVID-19 sanitary measures will be followed throughout the conference. This will be a "hybrid" meeting - Sessions will be live-streamed and there will be a limited number of online presentations. Topic areas of the conference are:
• Invasions of non-native insects, tree pathogens, plants and other organisms in forest ecosystems
• The role of trade and travel as pathways for invasions
• Ecology and impact of non-native species in forests
• Management of invasions / biosecurity
All are invited to attend the meeting.
This link will take you to the conference web page and registration: https://iufro.czu.cz/en Please contact Andrew Liebhold (aliebhold(a)gmail.com<mailto:aliebhold@gmail.com>) if you experience problems with the online registration system.

Dear friends and colleagues,
As I mentioned in our recent newsletter / annual report, we will proceed with planning our next All-Division 7 Forest Pathology and Entomology Conference, to be held from 6-9 September 2022 in Lisbon, Portugal.
Manuela Branco and José Carlos Franco will be the local organisers.
Attached is a first announcement.
At this time, we are asking for early indications of likely participation, preferably by 25 June 2021 or before.
We have chosen this date because we need to enter into an agreement with the conference venue and that requires a partial payment of the venue hire fee. So we need to know if there is enough interest from potential participants.
Therefore, we would like to ask you to ...
submit session proposals
(on any forest pathology or entomology topic); please send these to iufrolisbon2022(a)isa.ulisboa.pt by 25 June 2021 or preferably even earlier (see the attached announcement for further information); and/orlet us know if you plan to attend the conference
by sending an email to iufrolisbon2022(a)isa.ulisboa.pt preferably also by 25 June 2021. That way we will add your name to our list for occasional email updates and subsequent announcements.
We are hoping that many participants of forest health working parties will attend and support the conference.
Please share this announcement with your forest pathology and entomology colleagues (including participants of past IUFRO meetings).
Our apologies if you receive this message more than once as we will cross-post this announcement via other channels.
Best wishes
Ecki Brockerhoff, Manuela Branco and José Carlos Franco
and the entire conference organising team Tod Ramsfield, Maartje Klapwijk, Beccy Ganley, Julio Diez, Barbara Bentz, Hervé Jactel and Joséphine Queffelec

Dear colleagues,
On behalf of the Conference Organizing Committee, I want to share with you
our plans for the IUFRO meeting "Biological Invasions in Forests: Trade,
Ecology and Management". Having postponed the meeting twice, we are
determined not to do so again and we are set to proceed with the dates of
20-24 September, 2021 in Prague, Czech Republic (Czech University of Life
Sciences).
This is a joint meeting of IUFRO units 7.03.12 - Alien Invasive Species and
International Trade, 7.03.07 - Population Dynamics of Forest Insects and
8.02.04 - Ecology of Alien Invasives. Topics addressed during the
conference include:
- Invasions of non-native plants, insects, tree pathogens, and other
organisms in forest ecosystems
- The role of trade and travel as pathways for invasions
- Ecology and impacts of non-native species in forests
- Management of invasions / biosecurity
There will be two keynote presentations, one by Dr. Jiří Hulcr and another
by Dr. Petr Pyšek
Currently we are planning the conference using a "mixed" format, meaning
there will be both in-person and remote participation. Like other
IUFRO conferences, we anticipate that most in-person attendees will be able
to present if they wish. We will live-stream the conference and will
include a limited number of remote presentations, however we cannot
guarantee that we will be able to accommodate all requests to present
remotely due to time constraints.
The COVID situation is changing quickly and despite encouraging
developments, it unfortunately will not be possible for individuals from
some regions and institutions to attend in-person but in those cases, we
encourage remote participation. We are optimistic that many people will be
able to attend.
Further information about the conference and registration for in-person
participation can be made at https://iufro.czu.cz/en

Dear colleagues:
I hope you are safe and healthy. I am in search of a taxonomist who could give our team a hand on the identification of some specimens of Acari (Tetranychidae) collected on Eucalyptus in nurseries in Uruguay. I would greatly appreciate your collaboration. Should you know someone who could be interested in collaborating, do note hesitate to contact me.

Sandy is very well known to the IUFRO Community having (for example) served Division 7 (Tree Health) Co-ordinator and Chair of the Scientific Committee for our 125th Anniversary Congress in Freiburg in 2017. If you are interested in tree health, biological invasions or forests and forestry in general - this will be a seminar for you to enjoy.
To attend, it is necessary to register -please do so at https://www.fabinet.up.ac.za/index.php/event/FABISerminarSeries/
Background information on Sandy’s talk can be found below and details of the FABI International Seminar Series is on the web site above.

Title: Macroecology of Insect Invasions
Date: 29 April 2021 Time: 16:00 (GMT+2)
Abstract: Biological invasions are largely an unintended consequence of globalization. With increasing mobility, humans have accidentally transported organisms around the world, breaking the geographical boundaries that separated species ranges that persisted for millions of years of evolution. Among animals, the insecta is the most species-rich class, with thousands of insect species having been established outside of their native ranges and many of these species causing immense impacts on agriculture, human health and conservation of native ecosystems. Here, I report on a macroecological analysis of historical insect invasions spanning 300 years and 10 world regions. These data are used to compare frequencies of invasions among different insect orders and among different insect families. Species-area relationships for native insect assemblages are generally stronger than for non-native insect assemblages. Certain groups, such as the Hemiptera, Formicidae and the Staphylinidae are generally over-represented in non-native insect assemblages, while other taxa are under-represented. These patterns generally reflect characteristics of these insects that cause them to enter important invasion pathways and biological characteristics that facilitate invasions. These results ultimately allow us to better understand the socio-economic drivers of insect invasions and can be of use when conducting invasive pest risk analysis.
Biography: Andrew “Sandy” Liebhold has been a research entomologist with the US Forest Service Northern Research Station, Morgantown, WV USA since 1988. His research focuses on the ecology and management of biological invasions and the spatial dynamics of insect outbreaks. Liebhold received his PhD in Entomology from the University of California, Berkeley in 1984 and worked as a postdoctoral at the University of Massachusetts before joining the Forest Service. He is a fellow of the AAAS and serves on the editorial board of the journals Population Ecology and Biological Invasions. He also currently serves as a scientific coordinator with the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Science, Czech University of Life Sciences Prague and a visiting scholar with Scion Research in New Zealand.
