Dear all,
My name is Rufayda Adam, a graduate student in the Zoology Program at
Southern Illinois University Carbondale, working with advisors Dr. John D.
Reeve, and Dr. Kamal M. Ibrahim. My research focuses on the study of
Dendroctonus bark beetles, it's a whole genome study.
I would like to obtain Dendroctonus samples in good condition either
freshly collected andor preserved in ethanol, so we can do some sequencing
of their genomes. We already have samples of D. frontalis and D. terebrans.
I would really appreciate your help and look forward to hearing from you.
Cheers,
Rufayda Adam

Dear FORENT and FORPATH,
My lab (Forest Health/Garnas lab at the Univ. of New Hampshire, USA; http://mypages.unh.edu/garnaslab) seeks a postdoctoral scholar to examine how host tree and climate drives establishment success of the parasitoid wasp, Tetrastichus planipennisi, introduced to control populations of the invasive Emerald ash borer. The successful candidate will help plan and oversee fieldwork across a climate gradient ranging from Missouri to Minnesota and will be responsible for data management, analysis and interpretation, and publication of results. The position is located in Durham, NH with occasional travel to field sites. Remote work is possible in the case of an exceptional fit.
Applicants should have:
* PhD degree (in Ecology, Evolution, Forestry, Natural Resources, Biostatistics, or related field) in hand by the start date, preferably January 3rd, 2023 or soon thereafter
* Strong statistical, analytical, and data wrangling skills
* Demonstrated programming ability (i.e., R, python, etc.) or facility with other statistical software
* Evidence of a growing publication record consistent with the candidate's career stage
This project is a collaborative effort between the Garnas lab at the University of New Hampshire and Dr. Juli Gould at the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS). Funding for this project is currently available for one year, with a high probability for renewal for an additional one or more years, assuming satisfactory performance.
For more information and to apply, please see: https://jobs.usnh.edu/postings/50435. For more information, please send queries to Garnas Lab Recruiting garnaslab.recruiting(a)unh.edu<mailto:garnaslab.recruiting@unh.edu>

The University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna, BOKU (Department of Forest and Soil Sciences; Institute of Forest Entomology, Forest Pathology and Forest Protection) in Austria is offering a 2- to 3-year PhD or post-doc position to study aspects of ash dieback, a serious disease of common ash (Fraxinus excelsior) and other Fraxinus spp caused by the invasive alien ascomycete fungus Hymenoscyphus fraxineus.
The project aims at improving knowledge on the effect of admixed tree species on the intensity of ash dieback on common ash. The research will be conduced in three field experiments established in 2021 and 2022 where ash trees (reproductive material with putative higher disease
resistance) have been planted in blocks (6 x 6 plants), purely and in equal mixture with various other tree species (24 in total). Another aim is to evaluate the susceptibility of various ash species and genotypes of common ash to ash dieback in existing field experiments.
Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
Please find further information in the attached announcement.

MSc or PhD Position available – Bark beetle pheromone ecology
This position is open until filled.
The successful candidate will work on a research project evaluating regional variation in pheromone production and response in bark beetle populations (e.g. spruce beetle, western pine beetle, southern pine beetle) across North America. The student will be co-supervised by Dr. Dezene Huber of UNBC and Dr. Deepa Pureswaran of the Canadian Forest Service (Adjunct Professor at the University of New Brunswick).
The student will conduct field and laboratory experiments in both western and eastern Canada in collaboration with Canadian and US partners including provincial entomologists, USDA Forest Service scientists and industry to better understand the ecology and evolution of inter-population pheromone variation in tree-killing bark beetles. The project will involve chemical ecology techniques, analytical chemistry and could involve molecular techniques. The work aims to identify lure formulations for pest management that reflect regional variation in pheromone profiles.
Interested candidates should have experience in data collection and analysis, be willing to travel and do fieldwork in forests.

Healthy and resilient forests are crucial for safeguarding biodiversity and maintaining ecosystem services. Genetic diversity and integrated pest management are nature-based solutions for continued adaptation of forests to climate change. Moreover, genetic diversity provides both resilience and resistance to stress factors and forest disturbances, such as outbreaks of pests and diseases.
This session will present recent advances in understanding the genetic basis of adaptive traits and resistance to pests and diseases, and integrated management of outbreaks of pests and diseases.
We are looking forward to welcome you in our events either in person or online.
