Camcore is a university-industry cooperative program with a 42-year history, with 26 member companies in Latin America (16), Africa (7), and Indonesia (3). Camcore membership is very diverse, ranging in size from 10,000 ha to more than 500,000 ha, across tropical, sub-tropical, and cool-temperate climates, with objectives including production of pulp & paper, plywood and MDF, and sawtimber from multiple eucalypt and pine species, as well as teak and gmelina, representing both brand new “greenfield” projects and long-established companies with strong internal research and breeding programs. The primary objectives of the program are species testing, tree breeding, conservation of genetic resources, and forest genetics research and technology development, all done in collaboration with the industry members. Essential Job Duties The Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources at North Carolina State University invites applications for a 12-month, tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor in Forest Genetics and Tree Improvement who will also serve as the Director of Camcore, the International Tree Breeding and Gene Conservation Cooperative. Leadership of the Cooperative as Director will comprise 30% of the total primary responsibility of this position, and will provide a supplement to the 12-month base salary. We are seeking a dedicated, energetic, and innovative scientist to provide leadership for this exciting program. Duties include directing and maintaining Camcore (30%); developing a strong externally funded research program in forest genetics and tree breeding (35%); advising and mentoring graduate and undergraduate students and teaching graduate and undergraduate courses (25%); and service to the department, university, and profession (10%). The Director has responsibility for the overall strategic direction of the Cooperative, including budget and personnel planning and oversight to maintain the core tree breeding program. The Director has administrative responsibility for and supervises research and extension activities of the Camcore staff (6 full-time team members). The Director must work closely with the Advisory Board of Camcore, composed of representatives from industry members, to establish, review, and update governance structure and allocation of responsibilities. Collaboration with other scientists working in forest genetics and other disciplines is expected. Outreach and extension to Camcore constituencies (regular technical visits to members, workshops, guidance concerning tree improvement) is a critical function of this position. Qualifications Minimum Education and Experience - PhD degree in forest genetics, tree improvement, or related field and rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. Other Required Qualifications - Experience in multiple areas related to tree breeding and forest genetics, such as breeding strategy development, quantitative genetics, molecular genetics, genomic selection, high-throughput phenotyping, controlled crossing, genetic test establishment, wood properties, or nurseries. - Evidence of being a self-starter who is capable of independent planning and implementation of teaching, research, extension, and management of a tree breeding program, including data analysis, laboratory, greenhouse, and field activities. - Demonstrated excellent communication skills for working with a wide range of individuals and organizations including forest industry, forest industry cooperatives, students, faculty, and public agencies. - Demonstrated ability in outreach, technical assistance, and collaboration with forest industry. - Evidence of ability to work effectively across cultures. - Evidence of ability to collaborate and lead consensus-based decision-making. - Demonstrated ability to produce scientific publications and generate external funding from competitive and non-competitive sources on topics relevant to tree breeding and forest genetics. - Demonstrated ability and interest in teaching, mentoring, and involving students in research and operations. - Fluency in English and proficiency in either Spanish or Portuguese is required. Preferred Qualifications - Experience in personnel supervision and professional development of team members. - Experience in management of organizational budgets. - Demonstrated ability and interest in developing and supporting international experiences for students.
