Subject: Climate change survey for forest managers / Une enquête sur le
changement climatique pour les gestionnaires forestiers / Una encuesta sobre
cambio climático para las autoridades forestales
Importance: High
FAO, in collaboration with forest management, climate change experts and
relevant stakeholders, is developing guidelines to assist forest managers to
effectively respond to climate change challenges and opportunities. These
guidelines will include actions related to both climate change adaptation
and mitigation and will be relevant to all types of forests, all management
objectives and all types of managers. More information on this effort may be
found here FAO Forests and
<http://www.fao.org/forestry/climatechange/65120/en/> Climate Change
Programme or requested at Climate-Change-Forest-Managers(a)fao.org.
To facilitate the development of the guidelines, we are conducting a survey
for forest managers (The survey in English
<https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/9L22T2Q> ). We are inviting you to provide
your views and perceptions on factors that limit the ability of forest
managers to prepare for and respond to climate change.
Kindly forward the survey to your members and your mailing list(s). The
content of individual responses will not be published and will remain
anonymous.
Kindly allocate 15 minutes to complete this survey.
Thank you in advance for your time and effort in responding to the survey.
Best regards,
The Forests and Climate Change Team

Dear IUFRO Division 2 Colleague,
I was just informed of the death of Victor Steenackers of Belgium, a most
beloved colleague who championed poplar around the world. Victor's
daughter Marijke has provided us with his obituary as well as his picture.
Victor was an accomplished scientist, the consummate gentleman, and a good
friend. We will all miss him dearly.

Dear colleagues
We remind you of our web survey about the effects of forest
certification on biodiversity conservation in tropical forests. If you
did not have the time yet, we invite you to please visit
https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/V6CJBK6 and complete this survey. It
takes only ten minutes. We intend to close the survey by 15 June.
Please also share with colleagues. It is open to everyone. We are
especially keen to have more input from forest managers!
Through this anonymous survey, we try to obtain opinions and
perspectives from forest management and conservation researchers,
practitioners and other experts on the following broad topics:
*The effectiveness of certification for biodiversity conservation
*The objectives of biodiversity management in tropical forests
*Current management and certification practices
These are important topics and we want to hear your views. The more
input we get the more valuable the survey will be.
Background: The European Tropical Forest Research Network (ETFRN) plans
to issue an ETFRN News about experiences and best practices regarding
forest management certification and the conservation of forest
biodiversity. The editors of the ETFRN News (Douglas Sheil, Jack Putz
and undersigned) are conducting a brief survey to accompany the papers
contributed by authors for this news issue.
Thank you very much for your collaboration, and again we request you to
please forward to colleagues.
Best regards and many thanks for all the input!

Dear colleagues,
I am pleased to call your attention to the first announcement of the upcoming IUFRO Tree Biotechnology Conference 2011 to be held in Porto Seguro, Bahia Brazil, from June 26 to July 1, 2011.
For more information please download the first announcement flier at:
http://www.iufro.org/download/file/5018/1149/treebiotech-portoseguro11-1st-…
Conference theme: From genomes to integration and delivery
Forest trees have unquestionably entered the genomic era. The updated Poplar genome, the upcoming Eucalyptus genome and the concerted efforts towards a conifer genome sequence are increasingly fueling a multitude of studies and applications both in sustainable forest production and conservation. Besides wood development, disease resistance, abiotic stress and reproductive biology, tree biotechnology research is now addressing the challenges of bioenergy production and carbon sequestration, while generating fundamental information on the impact of trees on ecosystems and the associated biodiversity. Time calls for integration rather than reduction with an increased sense of urgency for delivery of effective biotechnologies.
Brazil welcomes you to IUFRO Tree Biotech 2011
The 2011 edition of the Tree Biotech Conference will be in Brazil, a country with an outstanding forestry aptitude. We are very pleased to invite you to come down to experience the dazzling coast of southern Bahia in Porto Seguro, a key historical site where Brazil was first "discovered" by the Portuguese navigators and next door to some of the most productive plantation forest sites on earth. You can check the beautiful conference venue at www.arraialresort.com.br.
Tree Biotech 2011: science, social and field
The conference will provide an exceptional mix of science, social activities and field exploration. We are inviting some of the top international scientists to share their latest results and vision on biotechnology and related fields. We will strongly encourage both oral and poster presentations from a breadth of the international tree research community. In a full day of field visits, delegates will have a chance to visit Veracel's Eucalyptus clonal forests and micro-cutting nursery, its modern 1.2 M tons/yr pulp mill and its outstanding Atlantic Forest Biodiversity Station, all of them in a 50 km range from the conference venue. Last, but by no means least, besides the wonderful beaches, we plan for an appealing social program built upon the amazing musical and dancing traditions of Bahia to provide a very relaxed and informal environment to help foster very productive scientific interactions.
More information coming soon
A website for the Conference will be up very soon with the first call for papers and more detailed information on paper submission and publication, registration, accommodation, social program, travel and visa information. English is the official language. The organizing committee is working to secure governmental and industrial sponsorships to facilitate the broadest participation possible.
So mark the conference on your 2011 calendar, June 26 - July 1. We look forward to welcoming you in person!
Sincerely,
Dario Grattapaglia
Conference Chair
