Bottleneck breakthrough for tree somatic embryogenesis and other vegetative propagation in the era of omics and nanotechnology

There are several bottlenecks such genotype effect, explant effect and development effect which severely hinder the progress of tree somatic embryogenesis, i.e., just a few genotypes of the new variates. A few types of explants and special development stage of organs and callus can generate somatic embryos.
Based on whole genome sequencing results combined with metabolomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics, and the application of new technologies like nanotechnology as well, these bottlenecks may be broken, great progress may be obtained in this era.

<p>In our new <i>Season 3 of Branching out: the forest podcast</i>, we explore how scientists collaborate across disciplines to tackle emerging topics. This work happens through IUFRO Task Forces. We kick off the Season with the topic of <strong>bioeconomy</strong> and the <i>Task Force on Building an Integrated Vision of the Forest-Based Sector within a Bioeconomy</i>.<br /><br />Host <strong>Gerda Wolfrum</strong> and co-host <strong>Fernanda Gonzalez</strong> from IUFRO HQ spoke with <strong>Ivana Živojinović</strong>, a senior scientist at BOKU University in Vienna (Institute of Forest, Environmental and Natural Resource Policy and the Center for Bioeconomy), and <strong>Ricardo Vargas Carpintero</strong>, who recently completed his PhD at the University of Hohenheim, Germany and is now based in Colombia. They shared their insights on how the forest-based sector can contribute to a bioeconomy.<br /><br />The concept of bioeconomy is not new, but it has broadened into a more holistic framing that connects the ways how we produce, how we use and value biological resources within larger sustainability goals. The aim is to provide sustainable solutions across different economic sectors, by shifting from fossil-based inputs and linear economical models towards circular and regenerative systems. <br /><br />Ivana explained, "<i>This includes aspects of reuse, recycling, using resource efficiency, and ensuring that value creation does not come at the expense of biodiversity, of water or even people's rights and livelihoods</i>." Bioeconomy is not a single model; countries and regions emphasize different pathways.<br /><br />In this context, Ricardo talked about the situation in Latin America where biodiversity plays a key role. He said, <i>"Incorporating biodiversity in the bioeconomy to create economic value and contribute to the environment, for example, by restoring degraded lands or providing ecosystem services such as carbon sequestration, is one of these visions that is quite important in the Latin American context."</i> <br /><br />The forest-based sector is integral to a bioeconomy, but its scope is still quite narrow and mainly focused on timber, fiber and carbon. To make the scope of the forest sector within a bioeconomy broader and multifunctional, further innovation - not only technical or technological innovation, also institutional, organizational and social innovation – is required. In addition, cooperation between policymakers, public sector, primary producers, industry, and society must be enhanced. As Ivana pointed out, "<i>Bioeconomy transition as such will be successful only if it's coherent and inclusive and really grounded in diversity. Canada Impact+ Research Chairs in Climate-related Disasters and Community Resilience

The Natural Resources Institute in the Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of Environment, Earth and Resources at the University of Manitoba invites applications for a Canada Impact+ Research Chairs in Community-Based Resource Management and the work of the former Disaster Research Institute. A Canada Impact+ Research Chair is one of the most prestigious international awards globally, providing Chairholders and their research teams with an award of up to $8 million over eight years ($1 million per year). In addition, there is potential for a four-year extension at 50% of the initial award value per year. This extension will be determined by an external review of the award in Year 7.
Successful nominees will be expected to start their position at the University of Manitoba within 12 months of accepting the award. The successful candidate will be appointed to a full-time tenured position at the rank of Full Professor, or at the rank of Associate Professor with an opportunity to apply for promotion to Full Professor within two years of starting their appointment. Salary will be based on the candidate’s qualifications and experience, in accordance with the University of Manitoba Faculty Association (UMFA) collective agreement. The position will be provided with a start-up package and opportunities to compete for additional equipment funding through the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI).
The focus of this position is climate-related disasters and risks, and their management, governance, and/or community resilience. The research should result in transformational and translational impacts on Canada and beyond.
While this is a research-intensive position, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to teach and mentor undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate students in the Institute, Faculty, and the University.
Only candidates who are internationally based (both working and residing outside of Canada) at the time of the intake’s application deadline are eligible to apply.
Expected start date of appointment: Within 12 months of the award date (September 2026).
End Date: 2026-02-22. Posting may remain open beyond the date of 2026-02-22, until filled.

Assistant/Associate Professor – Forest Genetics, Genomics, & Tree Breeding
POSITION AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources at the University of Georgia in Athens, GA invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Forest Genetics, Genomics and/or Tree Breeding at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, with research, instruction, and university and professional service expectations as part of a 9-month appointment. Potential areas of research may include: Forest genetics, genomics, tree breeding, genomic selection, and gene editing technologies to address the molecular genetic basis of perennial traits relevant to forest productivity, health, adaptation, wood quality, and value-added biomaterials. We are particularly interested in candidates who can build a collaborative research program with faculty in the Warnell School, across campus, and with research partners at regional, national, and international levels, employing these tools for forest health applications, conserving and restoring threatened forest tree species, and improving forest productivity.
Research responsibilities include development of an externally funded program that is recognized nationally and internationally. Teaching duties could include developing new undergraduate and graduate courses in Forest Genetics/Tree Improvement and Forest Biotechnology. Professional service includes serving on School/University committees and actively participating in professional/scientific societies.
QUALIFICATIONS: Required qualifications include a Ph.D. degree prior to the starting date in Forestry, Horticulture, Plant Genetics, Crop and Soil Science, or a closely related field. Preferred qualifications include prior graduate or postdoctoral research training or industrial experience in some area of plant genetics, genomics, biotechnology and/or breeding, and the ability to effectively communicate research findings to the forestry and plant biotechnology research communities, as evidenced by a strong publication record and engagement with stakeholders.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Appointment to Associate Professor requires a record consistent with promotion to Associate Professor at the Warnell School, such as strong evidence of emerging stature as a national authority, acquiring and administering external funding, ability to produce and communicate research products, and excellence in teaching and mentoring students. Service at the Associate Professor level for 1-2 years is preferred for this rank.

<p>The final episode of <i>Season 2 of Branching Out: The Forest Podcast</i>, hosted by <strong>Jose Bolaños</strong> from IUFRO HQ, focused on IUFRO Scientific Division 9 - <strong>Forest Policy and Economics</strong>. The episode features <strong>Janette Bulkan</strong> from the University of British Columbia in Canada and <strong>Lukas Giessen</strong> from the Technical University Dresden in Germany, along with co-host <strong>Gerda Wolfrum</strong> from IUFRO HQ. Janette and Lukas coordinate Working Parties on <i>Indigenous peoples and forest landscapes</i> and <i>A.I. methods in forest social sciences</i>, respectively. <br /><br />Besides highlighting the broad range of topics covered by Division 9 spanning from forest resources research to information and communication, from forest history to legal aspects, and from forest governance to forest sector analysis, Janette and Lukas explained why the role of social sciences in forest research has become so important. <br /><br />In this context, Lukas referred to a quote by famous forester Jack Westoby who said that "<i>forestry is not about trees, it's about people</i>." <br /><br />Janette focused mainly on the relationship between Indigenous Peoples and forests highlighting her work in the Guyana Shield. Globally, she said, Indigenous Peoples, who have the longest association with specific places, including in forests, which are their traditional ancestral territories, often have the weakest legal rights to those areas. <br /><br />Lukas, on the other hand, delved deeper into the concept of forest governance. He also talked about the big potential that he sees in AI helping social science to increase rigor and to reflect on human biases. It remains to be seen how successful AI will be in analyzing qualitative, not quantitative social science data, but this is what makes it so exciting. <br /><br />Based on these two approaches, the episode investigates how both the traditional and the high-tech knowledge contribute to forest and forest management today and in the future.<br /><br />Finally, looking ahead to the 2029 IUFRO World Congress in Nairobi, the first of its kind on the African continent, both shared their expectations of the event.
