Betreff: coming IUFRO & EU LIFE meeting in Sweden, August 2018
Dear Colleagues;
1) first of all, sorry for eventual cross-posting as this message will
apparently go to several mailing lists;
2) with this message we (Jan Stenlid & myself) would like to announce that
preparations have already been initiated to organize IUFRO Working Party
7.02.01 Root & Stem Rots Conference, in conjunction with the 4th
International Elm Conference, as well as the Conference entitled Recent
Advances in Research on Ash Dieback & Dutch Elm Disease (EC LIFE+ Nature);
3) the EVENT is planned to cover not only above-mentioned topics, but also
aspects of tree breeding for resistance & propagation, entomology,
biodiversity and related social sciences;
4) provisional schedule:
- Sunday, August 26th, arrival, accommodation in Uppsala hotels, and
reception at our campus (Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences,
Uppsala, Ultuna); as the campus is located about 15-20 min bus travel from
the central Uppsala, one option for accommodation could be
http://www.sunnerstaherrgard.se/ which is within the 10-15 min walking
distance to the conference venue (along a river with beautiful scenery);
and there you will get value for money; please note that it is not a big
hotel, so number of places is limited, and there are numerous international
events at our campus;
- August 26 27th, scientific sessions at Campus Ultuna;
- August 28th, half-day field excursion & travel by bus to Nynäshamn
harbour, and then taking ferry to Visby, Gotland Island
(http://www.destinationgotland.se/en/ferry/ ; upon arrival, individual
accommodation and eventual sightseeing in one of the most beautiful towns in
the world is up to you; please note that buses, ferry, and (most of) lunches
and coffee breaks will be organized centrally from the budget of the EVENT;
- August 29th, scientific sessions at the conference centre in Visby;
- August 30th, half-day scientific sessions and then field excursion across
the Island of Gotland;
- Saturday, September 1st, departure, either from Visby airport (many
flights to Stockholm Arlanda airport with excellent international
connections, duration approx. 50 min.), or by the ferry back to the mainland
Nynäshamn harbour with good bus/train connections to Stockholm Arlanda
airport;
http://www.destinationgotland.se/en/ferry/timetable-and-prices/timetable/bus
-and-train-connections/ );
5) IN CASE YOU WOULD BE INTERESTED TO PARTICIPATE; PLEASE BOOK THOSE DATES
IN YOUR CALENDER; AND SEND ME A SHORT NOTE INDICATING THE INTEREST (not
binding) BEFORE CHRISTMAS 2017; we need this for planning reasons, as the
logistics of this EVENT appears to be rather complex;
6) in such case you will be included into the mailing list for future
related communications to come in early 2018;
7) funding for reimbursement for several invited keynote speakers has been
already secured, as well as the partial financial support for conference
logistic/venues; yet, we are continuously working for obtaining more support
in order to keep registration fee possibly low;
8) as recently discussed with Alfas Pliura, Editor in Chief of international
scientific journal Baltic Forestry (WoS Impact Factor above 0.6 and
constantly growing, free open access), submissions from this Conference to
BF will be welcome and subjected for peer review process, as full research
articles, reviews, short communications, and selected abstracts (upon
publication, also indexed in WoS); please note that the material must
contain original data, must be unpublished, and that the deadline for
submission is 2nd of September 2018; so in case of interest, please do
setting up and plan writing of the material in good order;
9) i will be in touch with more details in January 2018;
kind regards, and looking forwards to meet you in Sweden;
Rimvys Vasaitis & Jan Stenlid
Dear colleague,
As many of you will know, the number of emerging pests and diseases of woody plants (i.e. species that have never previously been recorded outside their native continent) is continuously increasing. Early warning of these potential invaders before they arrive can be based on surveys of sentinel plantings and nurseries, and of arboreta. However, such surveys will necessarily face the presence of organisms and symptoms that have never been observed before by the surveyors.
To facilitate the identification of the most likely causal agents of damage to woody plants in situations where the exact identity of such agents is unknown, a field guide for the identification of damage on woody sentinel plants has now been published. The book is now available as a free open-access e-book under the following link. No hard copies of the book will be sold. http://www.cabi.org/cabebooks/ebook/20173265430
This guide is intended as an aid for managers of sentinel plantings, botanical gardens or arboreta, as well as phytosanitary inspectors, who may have knowledge of common pests and diseases of woody plants, but may not know the likely cause of damage that they have not encountered before. It aims to provide a tentative identification of relatively broad groups of organisms and not definitive identification of the causal agents.
There are chapters that explain how to use the guide, followed by keys (for different organs of conifer and broadleaf species) to guide the user to the relevant sections of the book, based on the questions entomologists and pathologists ask themselves when looking at a damaged or diseased tree in a fashion similar to how a doctor interrogates a patient to arrive at a diagnosis. The largest part of the book is devoted to the description and illustration of damage types and typical causes of the observed damage.
The book is an output of COST Action FP1401 - A global network of nurseries as early warning system against alien tree pests - "Global Warning" (www.ibles.pl/cost<http://www.ibles.pl/cost>).
Regards,
René.

In just a few days many of you will be at the 125th Anniversary IUFRO Congress and participate in sessions of Division 7 (Forest Health). There will be numerous sessions sponsored by Division 7 Working Parties and Research Groups (all starting with "D7"), and we will have two sessions with sub-plenary speakers (Barbara Bentz, Treena Burgess, Andrea Battisti and Bill Manning).
Two of the sub-plenary presentations will be given in the 'Division 7 Opening Session' at 8:00 am on Monday morning (18 Sept.) in the main room of the concert hall (Rolf Böhme Saal (Konzerthaus Freiburg).
The other two sub-plenary presentations will be given in the session 'Forest health - critical global issues in the 21st century' on Thursday (21 Sept.), 13:30 - 15:00 in room KG II - Auditorium Maximum of the University of Freiburg.
We will also have a business meeting where you will have the opportunity to meet and discuss with Div. 7 coordinators and deputies, learn about upcoming meetings, and propose meetings and conferences that you would like to organise. The business meetings will take place on Tuesday (19 Sept.) from 20:00 h (8 pm) in room KG I - 1199 (Uni Freiburg). This will be followed by a business meeting of RG 7.03 (Entomology) from 21:00 (9 pm) in KG I - 1139 (Uni Freiburg).
There has been much interest in the social event on Monday evening (18 Sept.). We have just reached maximum capacity (140 people) at the venue, and those who registered for it (by email to me) will shortly receive instructions on how to find it. There is a possibility that some will not come, so if you are still interested in joining us for this, please get in touch with me (eckehard.brockerhoff(a)scionresearch.com<mailto:eckehard.brockerhoff@scionresearch.com>).
Also, attached to this email is a report on recent and planned activities and meetings, and changes in coordinators in Div. 7. It includes a special thanks to Jolanda Roux who recently resigned from her position as coordinator of Research Group 7.02 (Pathology). Former deputy Tod Ramsfield has been appointed as the new coordinator, and Beccy Ganley and Julio Diez Casero are the new deputies.

Dear friends and colleagues,
(Div. 7 list servers and presenters in Div. 7 (Forest Health) sessions at the upcoming IUFRO 125th Anniversary Congress)
Social evening on 18 Sept.
Thanks very much to all those who already replied previously. We can confirm that this will go ahead on Monday, 18 Sept. 2017, starting from about 7:30 or 8:00 pm / 19:30 or 20:00 hrs.
There will be a change to a nicer venue. This is in a suburb of Freiburg that can be reached easily by tram (a 10-minute tram ride, with a tram leaving every 10 minutes; more details to come in the next few days).
This promises to be a very nice opportunity to socialise in the beer garden outdoors or in the hall inside (depending on the weather). There will be local beers and other drinks available, including non-alcoholic drinks, as well as dinner, including several affordable options. Dr Horst Delb, a local forest entomologist, is kindly helping organise this. Please note, this is not restricted to presenters; anyone interested in the Forest Health Division and their partners and friends can come along.
Important: We need to confirm the approximate number of participants. If you would like to join us, or if you have any questions about this, please email me (eckehard.brockerhoff(a)scionresearch.com)

Dear members of FORENT and FORPATH,
The IUFRO Working Party 7.03.11 has recently changed its title and scope from "Resistance to Insects" to "Resistance to Insects and Pathogens".
Tree resistance to insects and pathogens relies on multiple host defense mechanisms, and while these mechanisms are often specific toward either insects or pathogens, there are mechanisms that affect cross resistance and susceptibility. Moreover, the interconnection between resistance to insects and pathogens is particularly important when trees interact with both agents simultaneously, such as when insects vector pathogens or facilitate infection.
The rationale for this change was to create a more inclusive Working Party which could be of interest to many additional researchers, and to enhance the already strong connection between the Entomology and Pathology units of the Forest Health Division.
Given the broadening of the focus, we are building a new lists of scientists who are interested in the Working Party.
If you would like to be included on the new Working Party 7.03.11 scientist list, please send your contact information to the Working Party Coordinator Caterina Villari (cvillari(a)uga.edu<mailto:cvillari@uga.edu>). Email addresses will not be posted on the IUFRO website.
The next upcoming event jointly sponsored by the Working Parties 2.02.15 and 7.03.11 will be the 6th International Conference on the Genetics of Tree-Parasite Interactions: Tree Resistance to Insects and Diseases - Putting Promise into Practice, which will be held August 5-10, 2018 in Mt. Sterling, Ohio, USA. More information can be found on the conference website: https://treeresistance2018.ca.uky.edu/.

Workshop on Tree Resistance to Insects & Diseases: Putting Promise into Practice (Aug 5-10, Ohio, USA)
1st Announcement
Hello,
We have now picked the date and location for the 6th International Workshop of the Genetics of Host-Parasite Interactions in Forestry, Tree Resistance to Insects & Diseases: Putting Promise into Practice. This workshop will be a continuation of the recent workshops held in Orleans, France (2015) and Eugene, Oregon, USA (2015). The past workshops were highly successful, and we anticipate the same in 2018 for this important topic. Please have a look at the information below and on the website, and please pass the notice along to colleagues who work on aspects of Insect or Disease Resistance in Trees.
[cid:image005.png@01D30B89.B367DD70]
For more information: https://treeresistance2018.ca.uky.edu/
We are very excited to announce this upcoming workshop, but due to several factors, the workshop will be limited to 110 participants, which is similar in size to the 2011 and 2015 workshops. For organizational planning (including contracts we need to make for lodging), it would be VERY helpful if you would respond to the survey below (no 'commitment' but will provide us some guidance for planning purposes):
__ I am planning on attending the workshop
___ I may attend the workshop
___ I cannot attend the workshop but am interested in the Resistance (in trees) topic - please keep me on the mailing list
Also, we are updating our mailing list for people interested in this topic and workshop, so having a note back from you helps us to focus the future emails.

Dear friends and colleagues,
This is a follow-up message about the all-Division 7, Forest Health, segment of the IUFRO 125th Anniversary Congress with important information about the following:
(1) a social evening for participants contributing to, or interested in, Div. 7, Forest Health, on Monday, 18 Sept. 2017,
(2) a post-congress field trip organised by Div. 7 (an update),
(3) the business meeting of Div. 7, Forest Health, where everyone is welcome to learn about planned activities and opportunities to discuss and contribute.
(1) Social evening for all interested in Div. 7, Forest Health, on 18 Sept.
We are planning a social evening in a beer garden near the centre of Freiburg on Monday, 18 Sept. 2017, from about 8 pm / 20:00 hrs. This is mainly for all those who are interested in Forest Health, or contributing to Div. 7. sessions, or participating with working parties, etc.
Dr Horst Delb, a local forest entomologist, has kindly agreed to help organise this. This promises to be a very nice opportunity to socialise in the beer garden outdoors or in the hall inside (in case the weather is not so kind). There will be local beers and other drinks available, including non-alcoholic options, as well as dinner, for an affordable amount (about 10-15 Euros).
To secure the venue, we need to know that there will be enough participants. If you would like to join us, or if you have any questions about this, please email me (eckehard.brockerhoff(a)scionresearch.com<mailto:eckehard.brockerhoff@scionresearch.com>).
(2) Post-congress field trips organised by Div. 7 (update)
As mentioned previously, we are planning a Forest Health post-congress tour over two days in the Black Forest and the Vosges Mountains in France to see various forest health concerns (mainly insects and pathogens). We have about 20 participants so far but we can take a few more. For more information about this 'excursion 38', please visit http://iufro2017.com/two-day-excursions/#toggle-id-6
A detailed description of the full programme of Excursion 38 is attached. Briefly, excursion 38 (the 2-day post-congress tour) is entitled 'Ecology and management of emerging and invasive forest pests and diseases'. It includes an overnight stay in a hotel in France, two lunches and a dinner, wine tasting, etc., and the fee is 270 Euros.
If you would like to join excursion 38, please email Marc Dittes ( Marc.Dittes(a)intercongress.de<mailto:Marc.Dittes@intercongress.de> )
(3) The business meeting of Div. 7, Forest Health, on 19 Sept.
Although the name 'business meeting' may not be so enticing, these meetings are always very interesting to anyone who would like to know a little more about IUFRO, the Forest Health groups and their activities, upcoming conferences, opportunities to discuss relevant topics, become involved, etc. Attendance of this is not limited to office holders and, in fact, everyone is welcome to come along.
This is currently scheduled for Tuesday, 19 Sept. 2017, from 8 pm / 20:00 hrs. Please mark this in your diaries.
Please send me an email if you have any questions or suggestions (which we welcome).
Kind regards,
