CONFERENCE: Preparing Europe for invasion by the beetles emerald ash borer and bronze birch borer, two major tree-killing pests
As part of our Euphresco project on emerald ash borer and bronze birch borer (PREPSYS - www.forestry.gov.uk/fr/prepsys<http://www.forestry.gov.uk/fr/prepsys>,) we have organised a conference on how Europe can prepare for potential invasion by the beetles. The conference will be held at BFW, Vienna from 1-4 October 2018. Details are in the attached announcement.
The conference is sponsored by OECD Cooperative Research Programme and by the UK Government Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra).
Apart from an outstanding list of invited keynote speakers, there are a limited number of oral presentation slots, as well as a poster paper session.
The Proceedings will be published in a special issue of the journal Forestry.
We hope that you can make the meeting and we look forward to seeing you in Vienna in October. Please email if you are interested and we will keep you informed of progress. Registration for the meeting will open in the near future, along with details of travel, hotels and the venue.

We would like to draw you attention to an International Conference on Sentinel Plantings that will take place on 9-12 October 2018 in Sursee, Switzerland. Sentinel plantings are a tool for the detection, identification and risk assessment of pests and diseases before arrival, potentially allowing better prevention and management of new alien pest and disease introductions.
More details and preliminary programme will be made available on a dedicated website soon. The programme will include :
· Keynote lectures by international experts
· Presentations of the outputs of COST Action Global Warning
· Scientific sessions - posters and oral presentations

Read an interview with Division 7 Coordinator Eckehard Brockerhoff of Scion
(New Zealand Forest Research Institute) about the work in IUFRO Division 7
and the All-Division Meeting at the IUFRO 125th Anniversary Congress.
Division 7 deals with topics that are all concerned with forest and tree
health, and the causes of interactions between air pollution and climate
change, tree pathogens, and tree-feeding insects.
Dr Brockerhoff pointed out that biological invasions and invasive species
have been occupying much of this Division's time. The impacts of invasions
are so pervasive and fundamental, and there are no simple solutions. They
are an unwanted consequence of international trade and the movement of
people from country to country.
"At this Congress we've learned, among other things, about the progress in
our understanding of what makes these invasive species so aggressive and how
we can better predict the types of species that behave in this way," Dr
Brockerhoff said.
