Dear IUFRO colleagues, forest and plant pathologists and Phytophthora enthusiasts,
We have extended the deadline to sign up for an "intent to participate" in the next IUFRO Phytophthora meeting in June 2022, until the end of August 2021 . I think that as of last week, we were shy of about ten, so I strongly encourage you to share your intent to participate with us if you are interested in attending and realistically think you will be able to travel to the USA. If you have already signed up, you do not need to do this again. See message below.
It is with excitement and optimism that I am writing to you to announce that the 10th Meeting of the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) Working Party S07-02-09 "Phytophthora in Forests and Natural Ecosystems " is currently scheduled to take place in June 2022 in California. The Meeting will start in San Francisco on Sunday morning June 19th 2022 at 830 am, and will end at noon, Saturday June 25th 2022, in Sacramento. As of yesterday, thanks to a massive vaccination program, California is extremely close to reaching herd immunity, and the State is going back to being fully open. Given the current epidemic data, there is no better and safer place than California to host an International Meeting.
While the California news is promising, the world situation remains fluid, and absolute certainties remain elusive: much will depend on the surge of new variants and on the efficacy of the vaccines. However, several IUFRO meetings are scheduled for next year, and so we have decided to go ahead and plan for it. Keep in mind that without a one year advance planning, it would be impossible to organize the meeting. The current plan is to host the meeting in California from June 19th to June 25th 2022: whether the meeting will actually happen will depend on several factors including but not limited to: a) The worldwide pandemic situation, b) The California and USA situation and travel restriction to and from the USA, and, c) The number of attendants.
While we have no control of points a) and b), above, we can work towards ensuring we have sufficient interest to have an in-person meeting. Our last meeting in Italy had 95 or so participants. Accordingly, we have set the minimum attendance to 50 people, meaning that if we have 50 or more people pre-registering, then the in-person meeting will go on, otherwise we will have three 5-hour Zoom sessions (8 am to 1 pm) , one in the am (Pacific Standard Time) of Tuesday June 21st 2022, one in the am of Wednesday June 22nd 2022, and one in the am of Thursday June 24th 2022.
We do hope the in-person meeting will happen. In order for us to be able to go on with the meeting organization it is essential that all of you let us know if you are going to attend in person. The sooner we know, the more likely it will be that the meeting will actually happen. Because of Covid-19, organizing larger gatherings has become more difficult, more pricey , and registration deadlines will be sooner rather than later.
Below, find some key deadlines:
1- Now until end of July: please fill in the form below to let us know if you intend to participate in the 10th IUFRO " Phytophthora in forests and natural ecosystems" meeting ,June 19th-25th 2022, in California. We need to have more than 50 positive responses to move forward!

2-In October 2022, we will reach out again to you and provide you with approximate registration costs. Each participant will have until December 31st to preregister at the cost of USD $ 100 per person. That down payment will count towards the meeting registration costs. If the in-person meeting has to be canceled, that $ 100 fee will be the full registration cost to attend the meeting via Zoom on June 21st-24th, 2022
3- A final decision on the meeting (in person vs. zoom) will be made by February 28th, 2022 ( sooner if the pandemy allows) and promptly communicated to all pre-registered participants
4- Participants will have until April 30th, 2022 to complete their registration. If the meeting will be on zoom, registration cost will be $100 per person. The exact registration cost for the in-person meeting will be communicated by February 28th. Full payment will be required by April 30th 2022.
Please be informed that due to current University of California regulations, participants must show proof of vaccination to participate, or produce evidence for an exemption (only exemptions for medical reasons are currently valid). This requirement may change, but it is currently strongly enforced.
The meeting will be in some of the most beautiful locations in California and the world. While, due to the current situation, we have decided not to have an additional pre-meeting field trip, the meeting will have two field trips and will start in downtown San Francisco, offering attendees endless opportunities to organize their own activities. Whether driving along the famed Highway 1 on the majestic Big Sur coast line, touring the Monterey peninsula, visiting the awe-inspiring redwood groves on the coast, or tasting wine in the famous Sonoma and Napa Counties you are sure to have a blast. Or you may decide to stay in San Francisco, consistently ranked as one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The meeting will end in Sacramento and we encourage participants to book their return flight from Sacramento International Airport, easily reachable from the meeting venue. However, participants may decide to spend a few days touring the nearby Gold Country and especially the rugged Sierra Nevada and Lake Tahoe. Lake Tahoe is less than 2 hours away from Sacramento: in that case you may opt to book your return flight from Reno International Airport.
I hope this email finds you well: I know the epidemic has hit some of us harder than others, and I wish all of you a speedy recovery and a return to normality.
I wanted to conclude by reiterating that the meeting will happen (or not) depending on the response we get from you. The conference will be held 20-24 September, 2021 on the campus of the Czech University of Life Sciences and COVID-19 sanitary measures will be followed throughout the conference. This will be a "hybrid" meeting - Sessions will be live-streamed and there will be a limited number of online presentations. Topic areas of the conference are:
• Invasions of non-native insects, tree pathogens, plants and other organisms in forest ecosystems
• The role of trade and travel as pathways for invasions
• Ecology and impact of non-native species in forests
• Management of invasions / biosecurity

Manuela Branco and José Carlos Franco will be the local organisers.

At this time, we are asking for early indications of likely participation, preferably by 25 June 2021 or before.
We have chosen this date because we need to enter into an agreement with the conference venue and that requires a partial payment of the venue hire fee. So we need to know if there is enough interest from potential participants.

Unfortunately, I have to inform you that the 16th IUFRO conference on root and stem rots in Mexico, Xalapa planned for October 2021 will be postponed and most likely converted into a digital format. This unfortunate situation is of course due to the pandemic. We are very sorry for this and that the information is coming so late. We will keep you informed on the development as soon as we have some more details. It has though been suggested to move the conference to March 2022, as digital or possibly a hybrid. Title: Macroecology of Insect Invasions
Date: 29 April 2021 Time: 16:00 (GMT+2)
Abstract: Biological invasions are largely an unintended consequence of globalization. With increasing mobility, humans have accidentally transported organisms around the world, breaking the geographical boundaries that separated species ranges that persisted for millions of years of evolution. Among animals, the insecta is the most species-rich class, with thousands of insect species having been established outside of their native ranges and many of these species causing immense impacts on agriculture, human health and conservation of native ecosystems. Here, I report on a macroecological analysis of historical insect invasions spanning 300 years and 10 world regions. These data are used to compare frequencies of invasions among different insect orders and among different insect families. Species-area relationships for native insect assemblages are generally stronger than for non-native insect assemblages. Certain groups, such as the Hemiptera, Formicidae and the Staphylinidae are generally over-represented in non-native insect assemblages, while other taxa are under-represented. These patterns generally reflect characteristics of these insects that cause them to enter important invasion pathways and biological characteristics that facilitate invasions. These results ultimately allow us to better understand the socio-economic drivers of insect invasions and can be of use when conducting invasive pest risk analysis.
Biography: Andrew “Sandy” Liebhold has been a research entomologist with the US Forest Service Northern Research Station, Morgantown, WV USA since 1988. His research focuses on the ecology and management of biological invasions and the spatial dynamics of insect outbreaks. Liebhold received his PhD in Entomology from the University of California, Berkeley in 1984 and worked as a postdoctoral at the University of Massachusetts before joining the Forest Service. He is a fellow of the AAAS and serves on the editorial board of the journals Population Ecology and Biological Invasions. He also currently serves as a scientific coordinator with the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Science, Czech University of Life Sciences Prague and a visiting scholar with Scion Research in New Zealand.

Making use of our Frontiers in Forests and Global Change connection, I am pleased to be writing with the good news that Bangor University has recently approved four new lectureships all of which are open to candidates across a broad range of fields in forest sciences (forest entomology would be an area of particular interest to us). Opportunities open for new staff appointments in forest sciences and social sciences at Bangor University
Forestry is a major focus of the current investment by Bangor University to recruit four new lecturers to the School of Natural Sciences<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/jobs.bangor.ac.uk/details.php.en?id=QLYF…>. We seek to appoint applicants who work in forest environments across a range of disciplines within Environmental biology (such as forest ecology, genetics, entomology, pests, pathogens, wildlife or conservation biology in a forest context). In addition, within the theme of Sustainable natural resources development, we see great potential to appoint in disciplines that are key to forest management and policy, including forest economics and a range of other analytical and modelling approaches including life cycle assessment, as well as qualitative research with forest stakeholders. The role of forests in mitigating and adapting to climate change, as well as the delivery of the full range of other ecosystem services remains a key research focus. We place an emphasis on ‘whole-systems’ assessment, not just at the ecosystem level but also up to the scale of the landscape, socio-ecological systems and the value chain, including the processing and utilization of land-use products as a key component of the bioeconomy.
Bangor’s research and teaching in forestry has a global perspective and we welcome applicants whose expertise relates to any forest types across the range from tropical to temperate and boreal, from moist to dry, and from natural forests to plantations, urban forests or agroforestry. We have a passion to advance and teach understanding of the world’s forest resources to underpin their sustainable management and related policy.
The Bangor forestry group and its research
Bangor University is a leading UK and international academic centre in the field of forestry, with a strongly upward trajectory.
The forestry group comprises 12 academic staff, with other Bangor staff working in fields, such as conservation, microbiology, environmental geography, hydrology, human geography and wood science, closely associated with the group. More than 20 PhD students are researching forest projects and form the core of our frequent forest research seminars.
The group is carrying out high-profile research across a range of subjects, with an important inter-disciplinary component, including:
* tropical and temperate forest ecology, biogeochemistry and soil function; forest restoration and resilience
* biophysical and socio-economic aspects of agroforestry systems and non-timber forest products
* forest conservation including the impact of forest operations and effectiveness of conservation interventions (from both biodiversity and social equity considerations)
* broad applications of remote sensing, in particular lidar, to inventory and monitoring of forest structure, biomass, dynamics and management
* tree pathogen microbiology and mitigation of disease impacts
* impacts of forest management, agroforestry and land use change on water resources
* landscape-scale modelling of deforestation and forest degradation impacts on biodiversity and ecosystem function
* economic and systems modelling of ecosystem service delivery
* social science of forest governance, management (including participatory forest management) and wildlife (including rewilding).
A key link that we are restrengthening, to enable full system assessment of the forest production value chain, is to the University’s Biocomposites Centre, which specialises in biorenewable products, with a strong tradition in wood science.
Key cross-cutting themes are:
* climate change mitigation through forest carbon sequestration and production
* elevated CO2, climate change and disturbance impacts on forest ecosystems.
We have very strong national and international networks that play a key role in facilitating Bangor’s forestry research and education. Bangor University is a partner in the Natural Environment Research Council Doctoral Training Partnership ‘Envision’<https://urldefense.com/v3/__http:/www.envision-dtp.org/__;!!KGKeukY!n2vXtZf…>, with Lancaster and Nottingham Universities and three other research organisations, that is funding multiple PhDs in tropical and temperate forest sciences, many based in Bangor. Of rapidly growing importance is our partnership with the Central South University of Forestry and Technology in Hunan, China (where Bangor University has its China campus), which is fostering a rapidly expanding set of collaborative research projects (including access to their large research forest). We are members of the International Union of Forest Research Organisations (IUFRO), the UK’s forest industry confederation (CONFOR) and are currently applying for membership of the European Forest Institute (EFI).
Forestry students and teaching at Bangor
Bangor University is both the first and largest educator of students in the forestry subject area in the UK, spanning a big group of PhD students, full-time and part-time distance-learning MSc degrees, and BSc degrees. These are characterised by highly motivated cohorts of students, many with considerable existing experience, and highly innovative teaching, with many new opportunities. Bangor’s excellence in education in forestry is recognised by its overall ranking of 3rd in the UK for Agriculture and Forestry and 1st for teaching quality and student experience (Times/Sunday Times Good University Guide 2021<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/www.thetimes.co.uk/article/good-universi…>).
At the MSc level, our part-time distance-learning degrees in Forestry, Tropical forestry, and Agroforestry and food security have experienced an increase in recruitment of more than 100% over the past ten years up to a current level of 70 students per year. The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission has recently renewed its award of prestigious studentships for the highest quality applicants to the MSc in Tropical Forestry and recognises the international leading status of this innovative degree programme. Delivery of these innovative degrees is blended with our full-time MSc degrees, including the long-established course in Environmental Forestry. A notable feature is the composition of the student body on our MSc degrees, which is highly international (from more than 20 countries across 5 continents), including many professionals from government forest departments, NGOs and research organisations, creating excellent opportunities for collaboration.
At the BSc level our degrees in Forestry, and Conservation with forestry have a more UK focus, yet attract a student intake with a notably global perspective on the subject. Bangor alumni are becoming increasingly prominent in leading positions across the whole range of UK forestry/woodland organisations. Student recruitment averages 25 per year, though application numbers for entry in 2021 have more than doubled over the level in recent years. We are also in the process of introducing a new BSc degree in Woodland Management and Conservation. At Bangor College China we teach a very successful and expanding BSc degree in Forestry and environmental management.
We have a very active student-led society (the Bangor Forestry Students Association) and an outstanding network of forestry alumni who work in key roles across a wide range of forestry organisations worldwide. Bangor as a location for forestry research and education
Bangor is a major institutional location for environmental sciences and natural resources management. One of the four units of the NERC UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology is located on the university campus, forming the joint Environment Centre Wales<https://urldefense.com/v3/__http:/www.ecw.ac.uk/aboutus.html__;!!KGKeukY!n2…> with the School of Natural Sciences, which also hosts the Head Office of the Forest Research agency in Wales. The Welsh Government’s Natural Resources Wales agency (responsible for conservation, environmental regulation and management of the public forest estate) has one of its largest offices and scientific centres in the City. We have a growing portfolio of collaborative research with all these partners.
