Hello all,
I am really thrilled to share the attached position description for the forest entomologist search now underway here at Ohio State University. For those of you who know him, this is the descendant of the position previously covered by Dan Herms.
Concurrently, our School of Environment and Natural Resources is searching for a junior faculty in Ecological Forestry and Restoration. I would expect potential synergies in this area as it may pertain to restoration after alien pest incursions.
Please spread the word to your local networks. We are trying to reach the widest possible audience of outstanding forest entomologists.
Any questions about the position can be addressed as described in the job ad. Anyone interested in potentially collaborating with me, please feel free to ask questions!
All the best,
Enrico

Dear fellow forest pathologists and Phytophthora enthusiasts,
I am happy to announce that the 10th IUFRO meeting of the "Phytophthora in Forests and Natural Ecosystems" (WP S07-02-09) is scheduled for June 19th (8am) -June 25th (8 am) 2022 in San Francisco and Berkeley, California! The meeting will be in some of the most beautiful locations in California and the world. While, due to the current situation, we have decided not to have an additional pre-meeting field trip, the meeting will have two full-day field trips and will start in downtown San Francisco, offering attendees endless opportunities to organize their own activities before or after the meeting. Whether driving along the famed Highway 1 on the majestic Big Sur coastline, touring the Monterey peninsula, hiking around Lake Tahoe, visiting the awe-inspiring redwood groves on the coast, or tasting wine in the famous Sonoma and Napa Counties you are sure to have a memorable time. Or you may decide to stay in San Francisco, consistently ranked as one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
The meeting will feature quite a few longer talks than usual (30 to 20 minutes), as well as many 12 minute talks and 5-minute 4-slides "poster talks" for a total of 139 presentations. Each attendant will be given the chance to present one study, and some may have the chance to present two. While, by necessity, smaller or incomplete ongoing studies will be assigned shorter times, the idea of having longer talks was born out of the necessity to avoid as much as possible rushed presentations and to allow more time for thinking. We will also have two Round Tables to facilitate dialogue amongst us. When you submit your suggested talks, you will be asked to rank them in order of preference to help the Scientific Committee with the selection process and the time slot assignment.
I am sure I do not need to tell you how challenging the organization of this meeting has been, but as of now we are all set to go. Pre-registration is mandatory and in order for the meeting to happen in-person we will need to have at least 50 people fully pre-registered by March 15th. The same is true for hotel bookings in San Francisco. The group hotel rate we obtained is incredibly competitive, but we need to meet a certain quota of room reservations by March 15th for the rate to apply. You will need to make the hotel reservation on your own following the instructions on the conference web page. You can book the hotel room for 1 to 3 nights before the Conference, depending on your arrival date, but I recommend you book earlier rather than later, especially if you are planning to stay 3 or 2 nights. Hotel rooms are fully refundable until March 15th, and refundable for Force Majeure reasons, including Covid, after that date. Single occupancy is on a first come first served basis both in the hotel and at the conference center. All double rooms in the hotel and conference center will need to be used as doubles, so please do not book a double for single use. You can choose your own roommate or we will help you get one both for the hotel and for the conference center.
In order to pre-register you will need to: a) Pay a $100 pre-registration fee online; b) Email the receipt of "payment made" that the system will email you, and c) Fill in the online pre-registration form. In that form, we also ask for titles and abstracts (final or draft) of your talk(s). If you need an invitation letter for Visa purposes let me know via email. If you need a waiver for the registration fee or a reduced rate, please ask me directly: we are planning to have a few available, thanks to the help of some sponsors and to the generous donations by participants with means. If you donate, your receipt can include the donation amount, so you may be fully reimbursed. The entire registration fee is tax deductible in the USA and Canada.
I should add that there may be very limited registration opportunities after March 15th, so you should think of that date as a critical deadline. All the information on the venues, schedule, rates, preregistration and necessary forms for the Conference are available on the Conference website:
IUFROBerkeley2022<https://can01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fnature.be…>
or
https://nature.berkeley.edu/matteolab/?page_id=6539<https://can01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fnature.be…>
Please note that due to current University of California regulations, to participate in the conference, (and to enter the USA for that matter) participants must show proof of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination or produce evidence for a valid medical exemption to vaccination. This requirement may change, but it is currently strictly enforced.
Doug and myself are looking forward to welcoming you and we will do everything we can to make sure you will have a memorable experience. The location of the field trips and the conference settings are certainly beautiful: the only thing missing is YOU.
See you soon !

Greetings,
We would like to announce that the joint meeting of the IUFRO "Foliage, shoot, and stem diseases" (7.02.02) and "Rusts of Forest Trees" (7.02.05) working parties will take place during the last week of June 2022 in Durham, New Hampshire

The importance of forest diseases increases as global environments are affected by pandemics, invasive species and climate change. Interested scientists are encouraged to submit abstracts on research involving foliar, shoot, stem and rust diseases of trees as we deal with this dynamic environment. The workshop scientific program will be organized in oral and poster presentations. We invite all interested participants to submit abstracts for scientific presentations. Although we will try to accommodate as many presentations as possible, the Scientific Committee, will reserve the right to change your application from an oral presentation to a poster presentation where necessary if time constraints become a problem. A selection of papers submitted to the meeting will be published in a special issue of the journal Frontiers in Forests and Global Change. To present a paper or a poster, you must submit your completed abstract by February 2022 as an attachment to isabel.munck(a)usda.gov<mailto:isabel.munck@usda.gov>.
We look forward to hearing from you, Isabel Munck and Salvatore Moricca

An appointment as Professor in Forest Pathology is vacant in the Department of Forest Mycology and Plant Pathology at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Uppsala. Our department provides a dynamic and international research environment that comprises experts who conduct fundamental and applied research on interactions between microorganisms and plants, mycology, microbial ecology and evolution, and biodiversity. Central themes are forest and plant pathology and nutrient and carbon cycling in agricultural and forest ecosystems. About half of the research in the department is in the area of pathology of crops and forest trees. The position is placed in the subject area of forest pathology. Current research focus on infection biology of forest pathogenic fungi and resistance biology of trees, and includes systematics and identification of fungi, fungal genomics and population genetics of fungi. Other research areas are biodiversity and invasive species in forest ecosystems, as well as applied research in forest management and resistance breeding. The department is responsible for and participate in teaching in forest and plant pathology in several programs and courses.
Subject Area
The subject area for the position is forest pathology. The subject includes disease on trees and forest ecosystems, primarily those caused by pathogenic fungi. The research can include, but is not limited to, interactions between trees and pathogenic fungi, fundamental biology (genomics, evolution, ecology) of forest pathogenic fungi, disease resistance, and research on invasive species. The research can address both fundamental and applied research questions of relevance for the subject area, forest ecosystems and forest health.
Application deadline: 2021-11-22
