Job Description
Rainbow Treecare Scientific Advancements is currently seeking an
Entomology Specialist to join our Research and Education Division.
Title: Research Entomologist
Job Classification: Regular, full time, salaried position
Description: The research entomologist is responsible
for conducting research aimed at creating insect management protocols
and developing products for the treecare market. In addition this
person will be responsible for providing insect related technical
training and education to RTSA staff and clients. This person will
coordinate with RTSA's Director of Research and Education and will
assist with the responsibilities of the Product Development Director.
The person in this position must possess a fundamental commitment to the
advancement of the science of arboriculture.
RTSA Research Division is involved in numerous research projects across
the United States in an effort to develop innovative solutions that
advance the science of tree care. RTSA research projects focus on
identifying practical approaches for managing insects, diseases and
other problems that affect tree health. RTSA strives to provide the
necessary knowledge and tools, which serve arborists in their pursuit of
excellence in caring for the health and preservation of trees.
Duties:
* Conduct and coordinate all RTSA insect research in the
United States
* Direct and conduct multiple internal research projects
simultaneously
* Coordinate multiple contract research trials with university
and industry scientists
* Evaluate insect management data on products to help guide
RTSA product development decisions
* Publish pertinent research findings in trade and peer
reviewed journals
* Provide training to RTSA staff and clients
* Assist in creating pesticide product labels
* Assist with bringing innovative products to market
* Develop insect management protocols and fact sheets
* Provide technical support to RTSA clients
* Foster relationships with scientists and key market
influencers
Reports To: Director of Research and Education
Qualifications:
Person Must Possess:
* Must possess at least an MS in entomology or related field,
however, PhD is preferred
* Knowledge of tree insect pests
* Experience and knowledge in planning, designing and
implementing applied research experiments
* An ability to analyze and interpret statistical data
* The ability to be adaptable to changing roles
* Creativity and an ability to be innovative
* Strong written and verbal communication skills
* An ability to communicate technical and scientific
information to scientists, practitioners, and lay people
* Must be able to travel at least 15% of the year
* A valid United States driver's license

* Practical work experience in the field of arboriculture
* Background in tree physiology
* Knowledge and experience in developing and bringing products

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR (forskarassistent) in
Forest entomology with the focus on insect pests
The Department of Ecology conducts research and
education in applied ecology: effects of human
activity and environmental change on pest
species, wildlife management and biodiversity.
Duties: The person appointed to this position
will conduct research of high relevance for the
protection of forest trees against insect damage
of economic importance. This research will, for
instance, deal with population dynamics of pest
insects, interactions between tree herbivore
predators, pest management systems, analysis of
damage risks or consequences of damage for tree growth and economic value.
The primary duty of the Assistant Professor is to
develop the science within the subject area. The
Assistant Professor should also strive to get a
broader knowledge of forest entomology, and
contribute to the education of students and to the extension service.
Eligibility: Applicants should have a PhD degree
or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a
doctorate. Priority will be given to applicants
who have been awarded their PhD degree at most
five years before the last date for applications.
Assessment criteria: Particular emphasis will be
placed on scientific qualifications within the subject area.
The position is full-time and will be granted for
a period of four years, starting as soon as possible.

application should be written in English. The
following documents should be included with each
application: CV including a publication list, PhD
diploma, copies of no more than five
publications, a description of previous research
and other activities of relevance for the
position (maximum two pages), and a description
of planned research that the applicant intends to
carry out within this position (one to two

persons able to provide references for the candidate should also be provided.

The 51st annual Southern Forest Insect Work Conference will be 4-7 August
2008 in Chattanooga, Tennessee USA.
We are currently working with the hotel (Chattanooga Marriott at the
Convention Center in downtown Chattanooga) to determine the group rate for
reservations. I'll send out specific information as soon as it becomes
available.
Please submit your ideas for plenary and concurrent session topics to the
Program Chairman, Chris Asaro at chris.asaro(a)dof.virginia.gov or
434-220-9060. Keep in mind that there was no AD Hopkins award winner last
year so we will have an extra hour on Tuesday morning for the Plenary
Session.
