The following may interest you concerning the development of forest entomology in western North America that literally began just 120 years ago:
· The summer 2010 issue of the American Entomologist will contain the following Heritage feature:
Furniss, M.M. 2010. Beginnings of American forest entomology: The role of Andrew Delmar Hopkins (1857-1948). American Entomologist 56: 78-87.
· Aided by webmaster Kathy Sheehan, I began posting a selection of historical photos and accompanying narratives in October 2007. http://www.fsl.orst.edu/wfiwc/admin/history/photos.htm They are grouped under 10 categories, beginning with the most recent postings. As of March, 153 photos were included; their accompanying narratives total 23,941 words. Now, I am turning my time to other pursuits, although a few stragglers may come along. I have enjoyed digging into the stories behind these photos and sharing my own experiences.
Also, at the request of the Forest History Society, I edited the rough transcripts of oral interviews of R. L. Furniss and J. C Evenden, which are now available on the FHS website:

Dear colleagues:
A position for a post-doctoral researcher is available in the Department of Entomology, LSU AgCenter in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The focus of the project is the foraging behavior of the solitary ground nesting wasp, Cerceris fumipennis which provisions its nest almost exclusively with buprestid beetles. The successful candidate will explore the potential application of the wasp in surveying the buprestid beetle community of the southeastern US and as a biosurveillance tool for non-native buprestid beetles. The full announcement is attached. I would appreciate it if you could bring this opportunity to the attention of potential candidates. Cheers,
Jeremy Allison

1 PhD student in the research education subject: Biology
Pine weevil feeding behavior in relation to conifer seedling properties
Swedish forests are generally managed by clearcutting followed by planting of conifer seedlings. A constant problem is that the seedlings are frequently killed by adult pine weevils feeding on the stem bark. This damage causes large economic losses for Swedish forestry. Therefore, considerable research efforts are made to find ways to counteract the damage (see: http://www2.ekol.slu.se/snytbagge) In a new project we will investigate the interplay between the pine weevil (Hylobius abietis) and its conifer hosts, and how properties of the host plant might be manipulated and utilized to reduce feeding damage. The PhD student will study natural feeding patterns of the pine weevil in relation to its conifer host plants. A focus will be on the feeding behavior of individual weevils and how chemical and physical properties of the seedlings influence the initiation and termination of feeding. Seedlings with different properties will be tested in laboratory bioassays, and the performance of less preferred seedlings will be further evaluated in field tests. This PhD study of feeding behavior will be done in cooperation with two other sub-projects on conifer seedlings, one focusing on enhancing the defense of the seedlings and one on the chemicals emitted from the seedlings. The PhD study is part of the project Parasite Resistant Trees funded by the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research. The PhD student will be offered to participate in the graduate school: Ecology – its basics and applications.

Dear colleagues!
We are pleased to remind about the up-coming 10th workshop of the IUFRO
working group 7.03.10 "Methodology of Forest Insect and Disease Survey in
Central Europe", which will be held in Freiburg im Breisgau/Germany,
September 20-23, 2010. It will be organized by the Forest Research Institute
of Baden-Württemberg. The workshop topics focus to the following themes:
Biotic Risks and Climate Change in Forests, with respect of three subtopics
in context to Climate Change: 1) Risk assessment of actual and introduced
pests and diseases; 2) Survey of actual and introduced pests and diseases
and 3) Information platform on pests and diseases occurrence. Our working
group is mainly engaged in biotic influences to the forest health condition
in Central Europe, but although researchers from elsewhere are welcome to
attend. You can access the meeting web page with more details and
registration form at: <http://www.biotic-risks-2010.de/>
http://www.biotic-risks-2010.de. It is also accessible from official IUFRO
web pages.
This meeting is an ideal platform to exchange information on methods and
techniques in forest protection, conducting of forest pest and disease
survey and advisory service, which have a long tradition within European
forest research institutes and faculties. It is a unique platform for both,
forest entomologists and forest pathologists to meet together in one place
to discuss and share experiences, practices and scientific results.
Within the regular program of oral and poster presentations there will be
organized a guided tour through the historical part of the city of Freiburg
and the whole day field excursion will present us local forest protection
highlights as well as the beauty of the famous Black Forest and
culture-historical sights.
Freiburg has retained its small-town charm, a remarkable place with very
rich history, with one of the oldest German universities, Cathedral,
Historic Merchant's Hall, and many others. We will have the chance to taste
local wines and beers and it is your lifetime occasion to buy your favorite
cuckoo clock.
Please, excuse for possible cross posting and feel free to distribute this
message to your colleagues.
See you in Freiburg!
Sincerely yours
Milos Knizek

Dear FORENT followers:
As you may know, registration for the IUFRO World Congress in South Korea,
23-28, August is now open at http://www.iufro2010.com
What you may not know is that presenting authors of all accepted Oral and
Poster presentations must register for the Congress on-line before April
30th. Failure to meet this deadline will automatically mean that your
presentation will be deleted from the program (and the book of abstracts).
We have what I think is a really incredible assortment of symposia
related to forest insects organized for the IUFRO Congress - perhaps the
best scientific program of any IUFRO Congress to date. However, it is
critically important that all speakers need to complete their registration
by April 30 - otherwise your slot will become empty and this will hurt the
program greatly.
Secondly, at the same web site, you can register for the post-congress
forest health tour. I would urge all of you that are planning to attend
the IUFRO Congress to participate in this post-Congress event. My
experience from similar venues has been that these types of tours are a
great opportunity to meet new colleagues from other countries, as well as
to enjoy incredible memories with old friends. For visitors to Korea, such
as myself, this tour will be a great chance to become familiar with some
of the serious forest insect and disease problems in east Asia. The
number of slots available for the tour are limited so I'd urge you to sign
up soon while there is still space...
-Sandy
