The IUFRO Work Unit on Invasive Species in International Trade will meet Oct 23-Nov 1 in Qingdao, China. Our meeting will overlap with the 2nd International Congress on Biological Invasions and the International Forestry Quarantine Research Group (IFQRG). The dates above include all three meetings. This overlap will allow for extended opportunities for networking, topnotch presentations, and for participating in IFQRG, which has the opportunity to influence the policies of the International Plant Protection Convention. It's a golden opportunity!

Please don't forget to send your abstract for the scientific workshop on "Vulnerability and Risk Management in Planted Forests" to be held from 16-18 May 2013 in Bordeaux, France. The deadline for abstract submission is 31 January.
The workshop will cover a range of topics including vulnerability of exotic tree plantations to various disturbance issues, susceptibility of tree monocultures, exposure of planted forests to invasive pests, development of integrated risk analyses and management systems adapted to plantation forests.

UC Farm Advisor Dan Marcum and I are looking for information on the use of Safari (dinotefuran) pesticide to control black pineleaf scale on ornamental pines. We conducted a small test this past year applying the pesticide as a soil drench to control the scale on Scotch pine, but the scale population collapsed naturally before the end of the test. We were wondering if anyone has successfully used the pesticide against the scale and under what conditions - host species and size, mode and timing of application, etc.
Any information and advice would be appreciated.

Ph.D. graduate fellowship at Dartmouth College to study invasion ecology across continents
We have a Ph.D. graduate fellowship available to begin as soon as summer 2013 in the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Program of the Department of Biological Sciences at Dartmouth College. The successful candidate will be a co-investigator in "Intercontinental comparisons of the ecology and impacts of an invasive forest insect: the case of the European woodwasp, Sirex noctilio." Other team members are: Sandy Liebhold (US Forest Service), Juan Corley (Ecología de Insectos, INTA Bariloche, Argentina), Maria Lombardero (Departamento de Producción Vegetal, Universidad de Santiago, Spain), and Mike Wingfield, Brett Hurley, Bernard Slippers, and Jeff Garnas (Forestry and Agricultural Biotechnology Institute, South Africa). Requirements include ability to conceive and conduct original research within the umbrella of a larger project, as well as enthusiasm for international travel, field biology, and collaboration. Background
Globally, planted forests represent about 7 percent of the world's total forest area, with an increasing area in all continents (FAO, 2011). It is forecasted that by 2050 the majority of the wood and fibre supply will originate from planted forests. Planted forests are commonly composed of pure, even-aged stands of fast-growing tree species. They are among the most productive forest ecosystems and planted forests are expected to play an important role in bio-based economies as well as contributing to climate change mitigation by way of carbon sequestration or bioenergy production. However, because planted forests are commonly managed as monocultures, often of exotic tree species, they may be prone to pest damage. Evidence is accumulating that suggests a positive relationship between tree species diversity and forest resistance to pests and pathogens, and alien tree species may be more exposed to pest species due to a lack of coevolution. It remains also uncertain whether the management of forests as pure and even-aged stands might increase the risk of wind and fire damage. There is therefore an urgent need to better evaluate the biotic and abiotic risks in planted forests and to decipher the underlying mechanisms of their specific susceptibility. This information will help foresters to adapt the design and management of planted forests in the face of global change uncertainties.
