UNCLASSIFIED - NON CLASSIFIÉ Dear All, The Global Plant Health Assessment (GPHA) has been conducted under the aegis of the International Society for Plant Pathology (ICPP). The first phase of the GPHA was completed by approximately 100 scientists that contributed on a voluntary basis to understand the current state of plant health (annual crops, perennial crops, home gardens, peri-urban agriculture, urban trees, and forest trees) relative to the provision of ecosystem services (provisioning, regulating, and cultural services). The GPHA website provides access to the documents that arose from the first phase: https://sites.google.com/view/global-plant-health-assessment/home The ICPP is now supporting phase 2 of the GPHA. The second phase will expand the assessments of phase 1 to address the future of plant health through networked projects. The GPHA does not offer or provide sources of funding. It provides an opportunity to exchange research ideas and methods to support research and education to address the present and future of plant health. A workshop has been planned for November 2024, in Toulouse, France. The workshop is open to any scientist that would like to contribute to the second phase of the GPHA. The goal of the workshop is to develop an overall strategy involving a collective of individual scientists and a collective of specific projects to address the state, and future, of plant health. Several scientists from Division 7 participated in the first phase of the GPHA and all are welcome to participate in this new initiative. Attached is the programme for the upcoming workshop. (OK, this is self-serving, as I am the Specialty Chief Editor, but what the heck… 😊) I would like to invite you all to consider submission of research topics or individual research papers. We are specifically interested in regionally focused research topics or articles. For example, topics and papers around pests and pathogens in Southeast Asia, or pests and pathogens in Central Africa, etcetera. Other topics of interest revolve around the issue of invasions by non-native pests and pathogens, specifically the issues of prediction of invaders and target countries/continents, and analyses of introduction pathways, including means of introduction (live plants for planting, dunnage, etc.) and predominant global trade routes. Other topics around aspects of biotech and machine learning to exploit biological and genetic data are also of high interest. I hope you will consider submitting to the journal. Cheers! Dear colleagues and friends, please see attached the first announcement for the 8th International Workshop on Resistance Mechanisms and Breeding in Forest Trees "Putting promise to practice in the face of global challenges". The workshop is sponsored by the IUFRO working parties 7.03.11 “Tree Resistance to Insects and Pathogens” and 2.02.15 “Breeding and Genetic Resources of Five-Needle Pines" and will take place on June 2 to 6, 2025, in Vernon, British Columbia. SCOPE OF THE WORKSHOP: The Tree Resistance Workshops series provides an international forum to discuss the status and future plans for both tree resistance breeding programs and scientific research efforts in the field of tree resistance mechanisms against pathogens and insects. The topics of discussion will include, among others, conventional tree breeding initiatives, ecology and genetics of resistance and tree-antagonistic relationships in natural and managed tree populations, mechanisms of recognition and signaling of biotic damage and plant defensive strategies, comparative genomics, GWAS, genomic selection and other genomic initiatives looking for resistance, interactive effects of climate change and abiotic stressors with biotic resistance, the role of microbiome in resistance, and new methods, technology, and tools for resistance screening. The primary audience is those involved with operational breeding programs as well as academic researchers and extension professionals. The 63rd annual Southern Forest Health Work Conference (SFHWC) [formerly Southern Forest Insect Work Conference] will be held 16-18 July 2024 (Tuesday - Thursday) in Greenville, South Carolina USA!
