Attached is the second announcement for the next joint meeting of the
IUFRO working parties 2.02.15 (Breeding and genetic resources of
five-needle pines) and 7.02.05 (Rusts of forest trees), which will take
place in Invermere, British Columbia, Canada, on July 22-26, 2019, with
an extended field trip on July 26-19, 2019. This beautiful site is in
the heart of the Columbia Basin, flanked to the west by the Purcell
Mountains and to the East by the Canadian Rocky Mountains. The attached
announcement provides some details for those interested in either or
both of these working groups.
Registration and call for abstract will be open in a few days.
The Proceedings of the previous joint meeting of these two IUFRO working
parties, that was held in June 2014 in Fort Collins, Colorado, are

The Garnas lab (http://mypages.unh.edu/garnaslab) seeks two highly motivated graduate students (MSc or PhD) to address basic and applied questions concerning the ecology, evolution, and functional role of insects and fungi in eastern North American forests. Both projects will be funded by teaching and/or research assistantships, or some combination therein. Details of each of the projects will be developed in accordance with project needs and student interests, but generally, one student with strong interests and experience in molecular ecology and another in forest/field ecology will be selected.
To apply for the PhD position you must have Masters degree or equivalent experience, or strong motivation.
The University of New Hampshire and the Department of Natural Resources and the Environment are home to a vibrant community of productive researchers with a strong commitment to student success. Located in the town of Durham, UNH is a beautiful campus surrounded by forest and natural landscapes. Only 30 minutes from the sea and less than 2 hours from the White Mountains, outdoor and other recreational activities abound, including right on campus.

I apologize in advance for the somewhat extended nature of this message and for duplicate message some of you will get.
A group of us, U.S. academics and representatives of non-governmental organizations involved in forest invasives, have established an advocacy group called Tree Resistance Advocacy Group. It is composed of myself, plus Faith Campbell, President, Center for Invasive Species Prevention; Don Cipollini, Professor, Wright State University; Anna Conrad, Postdoctoral Associate, The Ohio State University; Coralie Farinas, Graduate Student, The Ohio State University; Kamal Gandhi, Professor, University of Georgia; Fred Hain, Professor Emeritus, North Carolina State University and Director, Forest Restoration Alliance; Dylan Parry, Associate Professor, State University of New York, Syracuse; David Showalter, Postdoctoral Associate, University of Minnesota; and Caterina Villari, Assistant Professor, University of Georgia.
As part of our activities, we have produced two, one page documents (attached), meant to be used in science advocacy efforts on behalf of all of us who think that host resistance development and deployment should be at the forefront of our battle against invasive forest pathogens and insects. The two documents can be used in different contexts, depending on the specific user’s goals and they are meant to be complementary.
The two documents differ only in the policy solutions we propose (last paragraph). In 'TRAG one-pager 1.0' we argue for the establishment of a U.S. national task force to determine the best way forward.
In 'TRAG one-pager 2.0’ we are more prescriptive and propose the establishment of Centers for Forest Pest Control and Prevention (CFPCP) within the U.S. Department of Agriculture, akin to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. These are meant to be part of an infrastructure where scientists and managers can work proactively to handle invasives rather than reactively as it is done today, with very little to show for it.
I am asking you to let me know if you would like your name added to the list of signatories on one, the other, or both documents and, if you are members/leaders of an organization, if you would be willing to have your organization endorse the one pagers.
We realize that many of you are institutionally forbidden from engaging in advocacy efforts (e.g. U.S. federal employees). We also realize that these are U.S.-centric documents and ideas. However, we would be thrilled to have any signatories from around the world supporting us in our efforts!

We are pleased to announce the next meeting of the IUFRO Working Party
7.03.10 Methodology of forest insect and disease survey in Central Europe,
titled "Recent Changes in Forest Insects and Pathogens Significance". This
event will take place during 16-20 September 2019, at the Forestry Faculty
of the University "Stefan cel Mare" of Suceava, Romania.
The conference will include both oral and poster presentations, addressing
key issues relating to:
1) Information platform on pests and diseases occurrence in Central Europe;
2) Non-native organisms - network for sharing information on distribution
and spreading;
3) Risk assessment of actual and introduced pests and diseases;
4) Diagnostic tools and evidence systems for forest pests and diseases;
5) The pest and disease controls in the certificated forests (FSC or PEFC).
Suceava is located in the North-Eastern part of Romania and is the main town
of the historical province Bucovina, famous for the medieval painted
monasteries, included on the list of the world patrimony UNESCO, as for its
beautiful nature.
The organizing committee is looking forward to meeting you (the interested
