Attached is the Second announcement and a call for abstracts for the All-Division 7 Forest Health (pathology and entomology) conference in Lisbon, 6-9 September 2022.
We have decided to change the format to a hybrid conference which will allow participation in person or via Zoom. However, we hope that we will have a large number of participants coming to Lisbon to enable more personal interactions and to allow participation with the field trips and other side events. With most countries starting to relax their COVID measures and restrictions and with summer coming up, we are optimistic that in-person participation will be possible.
We encourage you to make use of the reduced early registration fee by registering before 30 April 2022. Please note, online participation will incur a registration fee because we need to recover the costs of the conference venue and online facilities and their operation. Changing registrations from in person to online participation and vice versa will be possible (in case you change your mind).

This is a gentle reminder that the March 15th 2022 pre-registration deadline for the 10th IUFRO Phytophthora Conference is approaching. Due to a mountain of logistical issues, we need everybody to be pre-registered by March 15th at midnight ,Greenwich time. Hotel booking at the Handlery Hotel in San Francisco needs to be completed by March 15th as well, and I guarantee you will not find a better rate anywhere else. Remember that buses will pick us up at that Hotel on Day 1 of the Conference. The hotel is a two short blocks walk from the BART underground train station that connects San Francisco directly with the airport.
Again, do not book doubles for single use: if you need a roommate, we can match you with another participant. If we do not book enough rooms, we will lose the preferential unbeatable rate we were able to get. The pre-registration form allows you to ask for the assignment of a room mate.
There will be almost no chance to register if you are not pre-registered by March 15th, so keep that in mind. Things are looking up, and we should be able to have a fun and productive meeting in beautiful locations. Other international meetings are happening in California sooner than this meeting, so the outlook is good. Do not hesitate and pre-register now, following the instructions in the original message pasted below. If we do not reach the 50 participant threshold by the deadline of March 15th 2022, we will cancel the in-person meeting in June and may have to reschedule or switch to a remote meeting.

I am happy to announce that the 10th IUFRO meeting of the "Phytophthora in Forests and Natural Ecosystems" (WP S07-02-09) is scheduled for June 19th (8am) -June 25th (8 am) 2022 in San Francisco and Berkeley, California! The meeting will be in some of the most beautiful locations in California and the world. While, due to the current situation, we have decided not to have an additional pre-meeting field trip, the meeting will have two full-day field trips and will start in downtown San Francisco, offering attendees endless opportunities to organize their own activities before or after the meeting. Whether driving along the famed Highway 1 on the majestic Big Sur coastline, touring the Monterey peninsula, hiking around Lake Tahoe, visiting the awe-inspiring redwood groves on the coast, or tasting wine in the famous Sonoma and Napa Counties you are sure to have a memorable time. Or you may decide to stay in San Francisco, consistently ranked as one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
The meeting will feature quite a few longer talks than usual (30 to 20 minutes), as well as many 12 minute talks and 5-minute 4-slides "poster talks" for a total of 139 presentations. Each attendant will be given the chance to present one study, and some may have the chance to present two. While, by necessity, smaller or incomplete ongoing studies will be assigned shorter times, the idea of having longer talks was born out of the necessity to avoid as much as possible rushed presentations and to allow more time for thinking. We will also have two Round Tables to facilitate dialogue amongst us. When you submit your suggested talks, you will be asked to rank them in order of preference to help the Scientific Committee with the selection process and the time slot assignment.
I am sure I do not need to tell you how challenging the organization of this meeting has been, but as of now we are all set to go. Pre-registration is mandatory and in order for the meeting to happen in-person we will need to have at least 50 people fully pre-registered by March 15th. The same is true for hotel bookings in San Francisco. The group hotel rate we obtained is incredibly competitive, but we need to meet a certain quota of room reservations by March 15th for the rate to apply. You will need to make the hotel reservation on your own following the instructions on the conference web page. You can book the hotel room for 1 to 3 nights before the Conference, depending on your arrival date, but I recommend you book earlier rather than later, especially if you are planning to stay 3 or 2 nights. Hotel rooms are fully refundable until March 15th, and refundable for Force Majeure reasons, including Covid, after that date. Single occupancy is on a first come first served basis both in the hotel and at the conference center. All double rooms in the hotel and conference center will need to be used as doubles, so please do not book a double for single use. You can choose your own roommate or we will help you get one both for the hotel and for the conference center.
In order to pre-register you will need to: a) Pay a $100 pre-registration fee online; b) Email the receipt of "payment made" that the system will email you, and c) Fill in the online pre-registration form. We are extending the abstract deadline for the joint IUFRO working parties "Foliage, shoot, and stem diseases" (7.02.02) and "Rusts of Forest Trees" (7.02.05). Abstracts are now due on March 21st 2022. Hopefully, by then, it will be easier to make decisions about travel. The meeting will take place in Durham, New Hampshire, USA. Durham is home to the University of New Hampshire<https://gcc02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Funh.edu%2F…>, offers the best of both worlds--breathtaking scenery and the slower pace of New England country and small-town life. With the seacoast city of Portsmouth, New Hampshire only 12 km to the east there are many good restaurants (excellent seafood) and hotels. It is easy to travel to Durham because close to Boston, MA 1 hour to the south. The Acadian forests are a temperate broadleaf and conifer mix ecoregion and there is no shortage of complex pathology issues including beech bark disease, beech leaf disease, shoot blights, foliar diseases, Armillaria and other root rots, Diplodia & butternut canker and many others. We have organized field trips close to the meeting location to avoid traveling long distances by bus. Fortunately, the university is surrounded by beautiful forests in close proximity to the Atlantic Ocean! The University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna, BOKU (Department of Forest and Soil Sciences; Institute of Forest Entomology, Forest Pathology and Forest Protection) is offering three 3-year PhD positions to study:
* Bark beetle diapause and life-cycle regulation
* Bark beetle-fungus symbiosis
* Bark beetle life-cycle regulation
BOKU is looking for candidates who have a strong interest in hands-on experimental work with insects, in statistical analysis of data, and are passionate about writing. A MSc degree in Biology, Ecology, Zoology, Entomology, Forestry or related fields is desired. Furthermore, interest in molecular work, knowledge in statistics (e.g. using R) and excellent writing and communication skills would be an advantage.
The 3-year projects will be conducted in Vienna, one of the most-livable cities worldwide. BOKU Vienna has about 12,000 students with focus on life sciences. The institute deals with various entomological and mycological topics in forest ecosystems, with numerous PhDs, Postdocs and research staff.

The importance of forest diseases increases as global environments are affected by pandemics, invasive species and climate change. Interested scientists are encouraged to submit abstracts on research involving foliar, shoot, stem and rust diseases of trees as we deal with this dynamic environment. The workshop scientific program will be organized in oral and poster presentations. We invite all interested participants to submit abstracts for scientific presentations. Although we will try to accommodate as many presentations as possible, the Scientific Committee, will reserve the right to change your application from an oral presentation to a poster presentation where necessary if time constraints become a problem. A selection of papers submitted to the meeting will be published in a special issue of the journal Frontiers in Forests and Global Change.
