Betreff: [IUFRO RG 7.03 FORENT] North American Forest Insect Work Conference 2021 Announcement
Dear NAFIWC attendees and all forest health enthusiasts,
It is with great excitement that I announce the first ever North American Forest Insect Work Conference in the Great Lakes region. That's right, the next NAFIWC will be held May 25-28, 2021 on the beautiful north shore of Lake Superior in Duluth, Minnesota!
Duluth has been voted the Best Outdoor City in America for its 7,000 acres of parkland, 225 miles of trails, and 7 miles of sandy beaches (don't worry, there are plenty of golf courses, too). There are also myriad opportunities to explore our amazing northern forests and their forest health issues.
Finally, there's plenty to do indoors, with nine breweries, Fond-du-Luth Casino, the Duluth Playhouse and much more all within a short distance of the venue.
For more information check out <http://www.visitduluth.com/> www.visitduluth.com.
Keep an eye out for future announcements including calls for symposia and other opportunities to be involved!
Best wishes,
Jess Hartshorn

Colleagues,
The members of the Task Force "Forest Adaptation and Restoration under
Global Change" of the International Union of Forest Research Organizations
(IUFRO) are conducting a survey to gain data and insights for developing
best practice approaches for forest adaptation and restoration under global
change. This survey relies on the knowledge of experts/professionals from
forestry and related fields and their information about actual examples of
Adaptive Measures in Forestry and Forest Restoration.
The collected data will contribute valuable information to a study of the
local and regional experiences with Adaptive Forest Management (AFM) and
Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) under climate- and societal change with
the aim to increase the adaptive capacity of forests and forest landscapes
with regards to those changes.
If you are working or have experience in this field, please participate in
this survey. You can choose among 13 languages. It will take approximately
15-20 minutes to fill in the survey. For any remarks to the survey (content
and technical aspects), please contact directly Markus Hoehl (

markus.hoehl(at)thuenen.de).
Please support the Task Force - Forest Adaptation and Restoration under
Global Change (Coordinator: Andreas Bolte, Markus Höhl, Survey admin; both
Thuenen Institute) in expanding our common knowledge base on these very
current and important topics!

We would like to thank you in advance for your time and consideration!

For the upcoming IUFRO World Congress 2019 in Curitiba, Brazil, there will
again be an opportunity to honor special scientific performances and
achievements with selected IUFRO Awards. There are still good chances for
your candidates to be among the award winners, and to receive a ticket to
travel to Curitiba and be given the opportunity to present the award winning
work to the Congress participants.
Therefore, choose among the Scientific Achievement Award (SAA), Outstanding
Doctoral Research Award (ODRA) and the IUFRO Student Award (ISA) and make
your nominations soon. Note that you should only nominate candidates from
IUFRO Member Organizations! No self-nominations are accepted! The deadline
for submission is 31 August 2018. (See awards below.)
Find more information and the nomination forms on our website
https://www.iufro.org/discover/awards/.
Send your nominations to the Chair of the IUFRO Honors & Awards Committee
(Professor John Innes, john.innes(a)ubc.ca) with copy to the IUFRO Executive
Director (office(a)iufro.org)
Scientific Achievement Award (SAA)
Up to 10 awards to recognize distinguished individual scientific
achievements within the fields of research covered by IUFRO. Criteria for
judgment are: dissemination of results, implementation of knowledge, methods
or techniques in practical forestry and skilled research management (success
in publications, meetings, funding, etc. in a larger group than the
individual) and involvement in IUFRO activities.
Outstanding Doctoral Research Award (ODRA)
One award per IUFRO Division to recognize outstanding individual scientific
achievements among young Doctoral researchers and to encourage further work
within the fields of research covered by the Union.
IUFRO Student Award for Excellence in Forest Science (ISA)
Up to three awards to recognize outstanding individual achievements
related to the main theme and sub-themes of the IUFRO World Congress made by
Master's degree students (or equivalent), and to encourage their further
work within the fields of research covered by the Union. Nominations can be
made through IUFRO Members and through the International Forestry Students'
Association (IFSA) via the IFSA Secretariat/Liaison Officer.
Furthermore, the Congress will also offer
Best Poster Award (BPA)
To encourage public dissemination of high quality research and to recognize
distinguished poster presentations by young scientists during the IUFRO
World Congress.
and IUFRO World Congress Host Scientific Award
Honours a truly outstanding scientist from the Congress host
country/countries who has elevated the profile of forest science and
research accomplishments.

Dear members of the IUFRO Division 8 List,
I am a PhD student from Bocconi University, member of the UNFF Children and Youth Major Group.
Together with Prof. Valentina Bosetti, a lead author of the Fifth IPCC Report, I am working on a research project on deforestation.
To carry out our research we have constructed a survey:
https://unibocconi.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_9SrYlUWHcKVTijr
If you have 8 minutes to complete it, it would give a significant contribution to our research and to my work for my PhD dissertation.
Participants can win $100 Amazon gift cards.
Forest experts from a wide array of countries and organizations have already completed this survey, and having your perspective would be really valuable to us.
The aim of our research project is to investigate how different actors perceive, conceptualize and frame the problem of deforestation, the different strategies to address it, and the related challenges.
We will gather the data only for research purposes and all data will be kept confidential.
Thank you in advance for your help,
Best regards,

Betreff: Call for papers on the topic of "Understanding Forest Health
under Increasing Climate and Trade Challenges: Social System Considerations"
Working Party 7.03.15 "Social Dimensions of Forest Health" would like to
announce a call for papers on the topic of "Understanding Forest Health
under Increasing Climate and Trade Challenges: Social System Considerations"
for a special issue of Forestry. Abstract is below and further details can
be found here:
http://www.mdpi.com/journal/forests/special_issues/climate_health
Forest health is increasingly influenced by climate change as well as
growing globalization and trade. Climate change results in species movement
and species that have earlier had more limited impacts can potentially
spread and gain impact under changing conditions. However, through the large
plant trade and inadvertent movement of species (such as pests or fungi in
soil) forest health is increasingly impacted by species not only originating
in nearby areas but also from far away areas of the globe. As a result, new
forest plant risks may occur that have largely been unprecedented, and with
a potential that has been little managed so far in legislation and policy
that may be more oriented towards supporting free trade. This special issue
highlights the social system considerations around forest health: the ways
in which specific legislative and policy systems, at the national, regional
or local level, aim at regulating or managing increasing forest pest or
invasive species risks and outbreak events, and the ways in which policy
instruments, technologies or means of interaction, routines or engagement
can be developed to manage plant pest and invasive species. This special
issue thereby illustrates the possibilities and limitations in specific
socio-economic and political systems to manage and limit the impacts of
increasing challenges to forest health under climate change and
globalization.
