Thanks for that. Have forwarded your info to Jelle Hiemstra. See below.
Good luck with the tolerant U americana searches.

Dear colleagues,
In 2011 it is already 8 years since the 2nd International Elm Symposium
was held in Valsain, Segovia Spain. In the past years in the Netherlands
several projects concerning elm have been carried out including a 4-year
project testing and comparing the resistance of the present elm
cultivars. That project was initiated jointly by PPO-WUR, WUR-Alterra,
the city of Amsterdam and tree nursery "de Bonte Hoek" and will be
concluded in 2011. In addition a programme for monitoring the
development of different elm cultivars in several newly planted roadside
plantations has been started together with the city of Amsterdam and
several other cities. Finally the city of Amsterdam has recently
initiated an elm arboretum.
Although we do not exactly know what research on elm is still going on
or has been done elsewhere in the past 8 years, we suppose that also in
other countries there will be new results and developments to be
reported. Therefore the idea came up that it may be time for a third
International Elm Symposium. PPO-WUR, Plant Publicity Holland, the city
of Amsterdam and "de Bonte Hoek" are prepared to take the initiative for
such a meeting. The preliminary timing and place we have in mind would
be 2-3 days in may-early June 2012 in Amsterdam.
The programme of course still is to be decided, but currently we are
thinking about the following elements:
* At least one day of presentations and discussions on progress
in elm research and developments in use of elms
* A visit to Floriade 2012 (http://www.floriade.nl/) the world
horticultural expo in Venlo NL, including a guided tour and a visit to
the elm exhibit
* A one day excursion to visit the elm arboretum and the elm
lining the canals, both in Amsterdam
The venue of the meeting probably will be at the Floriade 2012 and the
targeted audience for this meeting are scientists working on elm and elm
diseases as well as interested growers and urban green managers. In the
programme we seek to combine new advances in science with the experience
of growers and users of elm.
With this mail we (that is Hans Kaljee (City of Amsterdam), Ronnie
Nijboer (Boomkwekerij Bonte Hoek), Roel van Dijk (Plant Publicity
Holland) and Jelle Hiemstra (PPO-WUR)) would like to investigate if
there is enough interest in such a symposium. Please let us know if you
think organising the 3rd International Elm Symposium in 2012 in the
Netherlands is a good idea and if so, whether you intend to participate.
Also we would like to receive suggestions for topics to be included in
the programme and for colleagues that should be invited. Please feel
free to forward this message to colleagues that may be interested.
If the Symposium goes on, then of course there will be a formal call for
papers and participation.
Looking forward to your responses,
Jelle Hiemstra

Subject: [IUFRO Div 7] need your help locating survivor American elm
trees
Hi everyone,
Jim Slavicek and I are working together on the restoration of American
elm (Ulmus americana). American elm was a dominant species in many swamp
and floodplain forests in eastern US and Canada before Dutch elm disease
(DED) reduced its populations. At our lab, we have a small plantation of
elms in various stages of testing for DED tolerance. Several genotypes
have been shown to tolerate DED, and a large portion of the progeny from
crosses among these trees are DED-tolerant as well. We are currently
testing the potential of seedlings from DED-tolerant crosses to be used
for restoration plantings. It is our hope that large, stately American
elm trees will someday grace our floodplain and swamp forests once
again.
We need more DED-tolerant genotypes of American elm to use as parent
trees for our plantation in order to have enough genetic diversity to
use it as a seed orchard for large-scale plantings. We are looking for
healthy American elm trees larger than 24 inches DBH (diameter at breast
height) that are growing in areas that have had DED and that have not
been treated with fungicides to prevent DED. We are only interested in
American elm trees growing within its native range. If you see a
survivor elm that fits this description, please enter its location and
DBH at our website:
http://nrs.fs.fed.us/disturbance/invasive_species/ded/survivor_elms/
We will compile these entries in a database, prioritize the elms for
sampling, contact land owners, and then collect small branches from the
trees to propagate and test them for DED-tolerance. Please forward to
anyone who knows how to identify elm trees and might have interest in
this project. Thank you for your help!
