Assistant/Associate Professor – Forest Genetics, Genomics, & Tree Breeding
POSITION AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources at the University of Georgia in Athens, GA invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Forest Genetics, Genomics and/or Tree Breeding at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, with research, instruction, and university and professional service expectations as part of a 9-month appointment. Potential areas of research may include: Forest genetics, genomics, tree breeding, genomic selection, and gene editing technologies to address the molecular genetic basis of perennial traits relevant to forest productivity, health, adaptation, wood quality, and value-added biomaterials. We are particularly interested in candidates who can build a collaborative research program with faculty in the Warnell School, across campus, and with research partners at regional, national, and international levels, employing these tools for forest health applications, conserving and restoring threatened forest tree species, and improving forest productivity.
Research responsibilities include development of an externally funded program that is recognized nationally and internationally. Teaching duties could include developing new undergraduate and graduate courses in Forest Genetics/Tree Improvement and Forest Biotechnology. Professional service includes serving on School/University committees and actively participating in professional/scientific societies.
QUALIFICATIONS: Required qualifications include a Ph.D. degree prior to the starting date in Forestry, Horticulture, Plant Genetics, Crop and Soil Science, or a closely related field. Preferred qualifications include prior graduate or postdoctoral research training or industrial experience in some area of plant genetics, genomics, biotechnology and/or breeding, and the ability to effectively communicate research findings to the forestry and plant biotechnology research communities, as evidenced by a strong publication record and engagement with stakeholders.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Appointment to Associate Professor requires a record consistent with promotion to Associate Professor at the Warnell School, such as strong evidence of emerging stature as a national authority, acquiring and administering external funding, ability to produce and communicate research products, and excellence in teaching and mentoring students. Service at the Associate Professor level for 1-2 years is preferred for this rank.

<p>The final episode of <i>Season 2 of Branching Out: The Forest Podcast</i>, hosted by <strong>Jose Bolaños</strong> from IUFRO HQ, focused on IUFRO Scientific Division 9 - <strong>Forest Policy and Economics</strong>. The episode features <strong>Janette Bulkan</strong> from the University of British Columbia in Canada and <strong>Lukas Giessen</strong> from the Technical University Dresden in Germany, along with co-host <strong>Gerda Wolfrum</strong> from IUFRO HQ. Janette and Lukas coordinate Working Parties on <i>Indigenous peoples and forest landscapes</i> and <i>A.I. methods in forest social sciences</i>, respectively. <br /><br />Besides highlighting the broad range of topics covered by Division 9 spanning from forest resources research to information and communication, from forest history to legal aspects, and from forest governance to forest sector analysis, Janette and Lukas explained why the role of social sciences in forest research has become so important. <br /><br />In this context, Lukas referred to a quote by famous forester Jack Westoby who said that "<i>forestry is not about trees, it's about people</i>." <br /><br />Janette focused mainly on the relationship between Indigenous Peoples and forests highlighting her work in the Guyana Shield. Globally, she said, Indigenous Peoples, who have the longest association with specific places, including in forests, which are their traditional ancestral territories, often have the weakest legal rights to those areas. <br /><br />Lukas, on the other hand, delved deeper into the concept of forest governance. He also talked about the big potential that he sees in AI helping social science to increase rigor and to reflect on human biases. It remains to be seen how successful AI will be in analyzing qualitative, not quantitative social science data, but this is what makes it so exciting. <br /><br />Based on these two approaches, the episode investigates how both the traditional and the high-tech knowledge contribute to forest and forest management today and in the future.<br /><br />Finally, looking ahead to the 2029 IUFRO World Congress in Nairobi, the first of its kind on the African continent, both shared their expectations of the event. The brand-new Integrative Forest Pathology and Genecology Lab at SUNY ESF
seeks 2-3 highly-motivated and passionate MS and Ph.D. students to start in
September (or May) 2026. Students will conduct basic and applied research on
forest health issues regionally and worldwide. The lab's research program
will focus on multiple dimensions of forest health and plant pathology in
managed, natural, and urban contexts, in the following research areas:
* Fungal diversity and ecology in the context of plant and forest
ecosystem health, disturbance, and conservation using classical and
molecular tools and approaches
* Resistance to native and introduced plant pathogens in managed
forests, urban forests, and conservation contexts using classical
quantitative genetics and molecular tools
* Plant health dimensions of assisted migration and adaptive
silviculture
* Innovative monitoring approaches for forest pests and invasive
species - including the development of nanopore sequencing, bioinformatics
tools, low-cost spore-and-insect trapping, to be integrated with basic
aerobiology and fungal functional ecology research
* Epidemiology of forest pathogens and declines integrating field
data; vector dynamics; and/or Bayesian modeling approaches that leverage
forest health monitoring (FHM) and forest inventory and analysis (FIA) data
* Applying, integrating, and developing approaches from the fields of
disease ecology, invasion biology, biogeography, and big data to understand
worldwide and regional spread of plant-pathogenic and/or invasive fungi,
viruses, nematodes, bacteria, and parasitic plants in non-agricultural and
tree-dominated plant communities
The Integrative Forest Pathology and Genecology Lab conducts research on
forest health issues relevant to New York State, the Northeast, and
globally. Graduate students in the lab can expect to apply and develop the
above research areas across the following study systems:
* Oak health - including oak wilt caused by Bretziella fagacearum; oak
decline in Northern red oak (Quercus rubra); and emergent pathogenic
Diplodia and Tubakia spp.
* Beech health - novel monitoring approaches for Litylenchus crenatae
and interactions between host response and resistance to beech scale
(Cryptococcus fagisuga), Neonectria species, and L. crenatae. Potential
opportunities with Nothofagus in Chile/Argentina/NZ.
* Conifer systems - including above and belowground diseases of
hemlock, Eastern white pine (Pinus strobus), red pine (P. resinosa), native
and non-native spruce (Picea), and cedars (e.g., Thuja occidentalis and
Chamaecyparis lawsoniana, Port-Orford Cedar).
* Ambrosia beetles and their microbiomes and fungal plant-pathogenic
associates
Qualifications
* BS in biology, forestry and/or natural-resource related major (with
priority given to applicants with a prior background in forests, plants,
fungi, and/or microbiology)
* MS preferred for students seeking Ph.D.
Preferred Background and Expertise (prefer at least one and willingness to
learn others)
* Prior coursework in plant pathology, mycology/fungi, microbiology,
nematology, botany/plant biology, plant physiology, statistics, ecology,
forestry, tree biology, natural resource management, conservation,
traditional ecological knowledge, or related fields
* Experience working with fungi and/or other microorganisms in sterile
culture
* Experience with molecular biology/PCR, field work, and/or
greenhouse/plant care
* Any modeling, coding, computer science, and/or bioinformatics skills
* Experience or desire to work with stakeholders and practitioners
* Plant and/or fungal identification in the field
Responsibilities
* Teaching assistantship (TA/GA) and/or research assistantship (RA) ~
20 hours per week
* Complete required coursework
* Set and work toward your professional development goals under
guidance of a mentor
* Design, carry out and repeat experiments (with a high level of
planning and organization)

About SUNY ESF and the Graduate School (amended from the website)
ESF is the only U.S. institution of higher learning dedicated solely to the
study of the environment, located in Syracuse, central New York state and
one of two programs in the country with an undergraduate program in forest
health. SUNY ESF has a long history of forest pathology research and counts
some of the great names in the modern era of forest pathology among its
prior faculty, including Paul Manion and James Worrall. ESF is also one of
the oldest forestry schools in the country, having originated as the
land-grant New York State College of Forestry at Cornell before splitting
off and moving to Syracuse in 1911 (only twelve years after the Biltmore

Dear Colleagues,
We are pleased to announce the upcoming Ecology and Management of Biotic Disturbances in Forests conference, which will take place on July 27-31, 2026, in Fredericton (Canada). This event is jointly organized by WPs 7.03.06 - Integrated management of forest defoliating insects, 7.03.07 - Population dynamics of forest insects, 7.03.12 - Alien invasive species and international trade, and 7.03.13 - Biological control of forest insects and pathogens.
The conference will feature:
