The Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF) is awarding one extraordinary
individual for improving our forests and the lives of people who depend on
them. The winner of the 2021 award will be celebrated for their outstanding
achievements at the upcoming XV World Forestry Congress

Along with international recognition and prestige, the awardee will receive
a cash prize of USD20,000
and travel support to participate in the award ceremony in Seoul.

Eligibility: Applicants should be nominated by a third party. Nominees may
be persons, living or recently deceased, who have made exceptional
contributions to forests. Professional and research contributions will only
be considered if they are conducted outside of normal work-related
responsibilities. Applications received from a nominee's kin or business
partner are not eligible for consideration. Applications related to
grassroots initiatives are particularly encouraged.
Selection: The submission deadline for nominations has been extended to 15
October 2020. The awardee will be selected by a jury nominated by CPF
members, which will take into account gender and regional balance when
considering potential awardees.
Announcement: The awardee will be notified of their selection via email in
February 2021. This year's Wangari Maathai Award will be presented during
the XV World Forestry Congress <http://wfc2021korea.org/> (24-28 May 2021),
at the Coex Convention Center in Seoul, Republic of Korea.

The CPF launched the first Wangari Maathai Award in 2012 to honour and
commemorate the impact of this extraordinary woman who championed forest
issues around the world. The Wangari Maathai Award is an initiative of CBD,
CIFOR, CITES, FAO, GEF, ICRAF, ITTO, IUCN, IUFRO, UNCCD, UNDP, UNEP, UNFCCC,
UNFF and World Bank, all members of the CPF. Nominations will be reviewed by
an international jury of renowned personalities, who will also take into
consideration such elements as empowering women, youth and civil society,
fostering social commitment, promoting networks and improving the valuation
of forests in society.
Please find attached a flyer announcing a webinar series hosted by the new Working Party 7.03.16, "Behaviour and chemical ecology of forest insects". Each seminar includes an introductory talk by an invited seminar leader followed by two research talks and a final open discussion. The seminars occur every 2 weeks starting September 17 until November 12 and run from 13:30 until 15:00 UTC (this is 9:30 AM EST, 6:30 AM PST and 15:30 CEST). The seminar series is hosted through the FABI, University of Pretoria academic zoom account and will also stream to a YouTube channel we have created for the WP (this will allow us to post the webinars there and make them available for the community to view if they are unable to attend the webinar). The webinars are open to all but to join the webinar individuals must register online at the site provided in the flyer, registration triggers an auto response email that provides you with the link to access the seminars and allows us to track participation and limit the risk of unwelcome visitors.

The Regional Plant Pathologist develops and leads a coordinated response to pathogen detection, evaluation, prevention and control in the forests of the Eastern Region, and provides professional forest health assistance to Federal, State, other non-federal and tribal partners across the Region.

You are all invited to participate in a survey assessing attitudes towards women in forest entomology and pathology coordinated by Drs. Jess Hartshorn (Clemson University, USA), Maartje Klapwijk (SLU, Sweden), Mariella Marzano (Forest Research, UK), and Eckehard Brockerhoff (WSL, Switzerland).
The purpose of this survey is to assess current attitudes towards women in forest entomology and pathology and to identify gaps in support available to women in these fields. The entire survey should take around 15 minutes and you may stop at any time.

It is with immense pleasure that we announce the 1st International
Electronic Conference on Forests (IECF):
Forests for a Better Future: Sustainability, Innovation, Interdisciplinarity
Virtual Conference; 15-30 November 2020
Forests and forestry activities provide an opportunity to address the
pressing challenge of climate change through sustainable production. Forests
also play a strategic role in mitigating critical issues, including
biodiversity conservation, water regulation, energy efficiency, pollution
reduction and mitigation, production of raw biological materials, food
safety, and human and ecosystem health and poverty.
Forests contribute to the improvement of some important development issues
focused on sustainability and responsible forest management as a shared and
essential factor to address global challenges and guarantee the conservation
and enhancement of the global forest heritage as well as the socio-economic
development of production, environmental, and socio-cultural chains.
The global pandemic has forced us to reduce travel and to reflect on our
ability to leave scientific acquisitions as a legacy to future generations.
This reduced mobility stimulates us to maintain connections with the
scientific network using emerging technologies. This conference is an
opportunity to communicate our shared passion for forests, forest products
and services, and forest biodiversity.
The conference will discuss the state of the art of forestry operations,
wood supply chains, and ecosystem services, and objectives for the future
will be sought. Sharing and discussing the latest research findings with the
global community of scientists in the field of forests is the central
purpose of this virtual meeting.

Dear colleague,
Dr Mariella Marzano and I are guest editors on a upcoming special issue of the open access journal Forests, which we think you might be interested in contributing to. The special issue will focus on the complex interrelationships between climate, globalisation and forest health. We are seeking both theoretical and empirical papers from across environmental, social and economic sciences that present new evidence or illustrate the possibilities and challenges of managing the impacts of increasing risks to forest health.
I attach a flyer with more information about the special issue and Forests (IF 2.116). Please submit an abstract to the guest editors in the first instance. Authors of accepted abstracts will be asked to submit manuscripts by 3 February 2021.
The Author Processing Charge (APC) for Forests is 1800 CHF, however we have negotiated an excellent discount of 50% for all contributors to the special issue, so the fee will be 900 CHF. In addition to this, we hope to be able to waiver the fee completely for one contribution. The decision on this will be made by the guest editors and preference will be given to contributors from developing countries or those who do not have access to funds for the APC.
