It is with immense pleasure that we announce the 1st International
Electronic Conference on Forests (IECF):
Forests for a Better Future: Sustainability, Innovation, Interdisciplinarity
Virtual Conference; 15-30 November 2020
Forests and forestry activities provide an opportunity to address the
pressing challenge of climate change through sustainable production. Forests
also play a strategic role in mitigating critical issues, including
biodiversity conservation, water regulation, energy efficiency, pollution
reduction and mitigation, production of raw biological materials, food
safety, and human and ecosystem health and poverty.
Forests contribute to the improvement of some important development issues
focused on sustainability and responsible forest management as a shared and
essential factor to address global challenges and guarantee the conservation
and enhancement of the global forest heritage as well as the socio-economic
development of production, environmental, and socio-cultural chains.
The global pandemic has forced us to reduce travel and to reflect on our
ability to leave scientific acquisitions as a legacy to future generations.
This reduced mobility stimulates us to maintain connections with the
scientific network using emerging technologies. This conference is an
opportunity to communicate our shared passion for forests, forest products
and services, and forest biodiversity.
The conference will discuss the state of the art of forestry operations,
wood supply chains, and ecosystem services, and objectives for the future
will be sought. Sharing and discussing the latest research findings with the
global community of scientists in the field of forests is the central
purpose of this virtual meeting.
Topics of the conference include:
- Forest Ecology, Management and Restoration
- Forest Genetics, Ecophysiology and Biology
- Forests and Urban Forest Sustainability
- Forest Inventory, Quantitative Methods and Remote Sensing
- Wood Science, Production Chains and Fuelwood

Dear colleague,
Dr Mariella Marzano and I are guest editors on a upcoming special issue of the open access journal Forests, which we think you might be interested in contributing to. The special issue will focus on the complex interrelationships between climate, globalisation and forest health. We are seeking both theoretical and empirical papers from across environmental, social and economic sciences that present new evidence or illustrate the possibilities and challenges of managing the impacts of increasing risks to forest health.
I attach a flyer with more information about the special issue and Forests (IF 2.116). Please submit an abstract to the guest editors in the first instance. Authors of accepted abstracts will be asked to submit manuscripts by 3 February 2021.
The Author Processing Charge (APC) for Forests is 1800 CHF, however we have negotiated an excellent discount of 50% for all contributors to the special issue, so the fee will be 900 CHF. In addition to this, we hope to be able to waiver the fee completely for one contribution. The decision on this will be made by the guest editors and preference will be given to contributors from developing countries or those who do not have access to funds for the APC.
We look forward to hearing from you.

NEWSLETTER
Dear members,
The International Tree Mortality Network is now up and running!
We will organize different activities during the upcoming months and years and will use our <http://x6hr8.mjt.lu/lnk/AUgAAARkFs8AAchR_j4AALV5HxgAAYCsMcgAnDSWABQMVQBe7dR…> webpage and regular distribution of newsletters to keep you informed and to get you involved. Despite the fact that the current health situation has jeopardized our first scientific activity, a workshop on harmonizing data on forest condition that was scheduled for late March but was cancelled, we have succeeded in taking up additional momentum.
Please read on, this is the start of a global initiative that will propel science, forest management and policy making!
Data surveys of global forest condition
We recently have launched two surveys on data availability of global forest condition. The surveys seeks to assemble metadata on existing field assessments (i) to develop methods for quantification of tree mortality rates consistently across different protocols, and (ii) to link ground and satellite-based information to understand how tree mortality changes over time. We have already received XX responses from contributors around the globe. Please press the buttons to fill out the surveys.

To increase awareness about climate change-induced tree mortality as a global phenomenon, we want to host images on mortality events on our <http://x6hr8.mjt.lu/lnk/AUgAAARkFs8AAchR_j4AALV5HxgAAYCsMcgAnDSWABQMVQBe7dR…> webpages. To do so, we seek your support, please send us images of mortality events (large group of trees, forest stands,...) to <mailto:treemortnet@gmail.com> treemortnet(a)gmail.com, and add a short description about the main species affected, the region and country, the cause (e.g., bark beetle) and year of mortality (if known), and the name of the copyright holder (for example, Spruce_Thuringia_Germany_bark beetles_2019_Hartmann.jpg).

Global database and interactive map of tree mortality events
We have posted a tree mortality event map on our <http://x6hr8.mjt.lu/lnk/AUgAAARkFs8AAchR_j4AALV5HxgAAYCsMcgAnDSWABQMVQBe7dR…> webpage. For the time being, the map is a geo-referenced version of the "Allen mortality map" (Allen et al. 2010, Hartmann et al. 2018) and is currently populated by Bill Hammond as part of his PhD dissertation. Once published, we will post on our <http://x6hr8.mjt.lu/lnk/AUgAAARkFs8AAchR_j4AALV5HxgAAYCsMcgAnDSWABQMVQBe7dR…> webpage not only the interactive map that provides geo-referenced information on tree mortality events documented in peer reviewed publications over the last ~50 years, but we will also add a functionality allowing the signalling of new mortality events via an online entry tool.

Dear colleagues,
Due to the current health situation we, the IUFRO Task Force on Monitoring
Global Tree Mortality Patterns and Trends, had to cancel our first workshop
on Harmonizing terrestrial data sources on forest condition that was
supposed to be held in Wuerzburg, Germany, at the end of March. We have
acted upon the corona restrictions and have substituted the 'physical'
workshop with two online surveys, which will be followed by a series of
virtual working group meetings.
Surveys and workshops aim to identify existing terrestrial and remote
sensing data sources on forest condition and how the data can be harmonized
to infer information on tree mortality rates and trends over time. We now
seek your help to assemble information on existing data sources that allow
deriving global tree mortality rates. The links below will take you to the
surveys, specifically designed to be as brief as possible. The surveys seek
to assemble metadata on existing data sources in order to:
· develop methods for quantification of tree mortality rates
consistently across different protocols, and
· link ground and satellite-based information to understand how tree
mortality changes over time.
