Student Conference Scholarships
Motivated and accomplished students enrolled full-time in an outdoor recreation management, planning, or closely-related degree program are encouraged to apply.
Up to at eight student scholarships will be awarded for the 2013 National Outdoor Recreation Conference. At least half of the scholarships awarded will be to qualified students from within the surrounding region. A scholarship valued at $785 will be awarded to cover lodging, conference registration, and one-year student membership to SORP. Included in this total is a $250 check to be used for travel expenses. All scholarship recipients are expected to attend the full four-day conference.
The deadline for student conference scholarship applications is February 15, 2013.

Subject: IUFRO 2014 Congress: Session proposal website open for business
Dear CSC friends,
I hope that the new year is off to a good start for all of you. I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome Robert Jandl, deputy coordinator of Division 8, to the Congress Scientific Committee. Robert will be replacing Alain Franc, who is not able to continue in this role.
As you all know, the next phase of our work is to promote the preparation and submission of session proposals from within IUFRO and from other partners, optimally in cooperation with IUFRO Research Groups, Working Parties and/or Task Forces. All session proposals will be submitted online via the Congress website which is now open: http://iufro2014.com/scientific-program/session-proposals/. Session proposals can be submitted any time from now until April 30th. As we have discussed earlier, we expect all members of the CSC to help spread the word about the open call for session proposals and to encourage the preparation of session proposals by IUFRO units and others (preferably involving two or more IUFRO units, optimally across IUFRO Divisions, Task Forces and/or other organizations) closely aligned to the Congress Themes. It would be most helpful if those preparing session proposals could send drafts of these proposals to relevant members of the CSC prior to their submission online - this could help us identify potential co-organizers (from other IUFRO units), and thereby reduce the number of very similar session proposals (which was a bit of a problem for the 2010 Congress). It will also save us work during the session proposal review phase (May-June), since part of that review process will be to identify very similar sessions that need to be combined.
In the coming weeks, all CSC members will be given access to the session proposal database and online review system - you will receive a message when this is ready.
Finally, I would like to note that all session proposals, including those that will eventually be designated as sub-plenary sessions, must be submitted through this online system (which, by the way, is very easy to use). I will be writing separately to CSC members (and other identified colleagues) who have already volunteered to serve as the focal points for development of the sub-plenary sessions in cooperation with relevant IUFRO Task Forces, which we identified as priorities during our CSC meeting in Nairobi last June.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns at this stage. I look forward to working with you in this very important phase of preparations for the 2014 Congress.

The response for submitting abstracts for poster and presentation sessions to the IUFRO Conference on Forests for People and the 2013 National Outdoor Recreation Conference has been gratifuying. Ninety-five abstracts have been submitted to date---some to host a larger session and some for individual presentations.
Due to the normal challenges of international communications, we have decided to extend the deadline for abstracts for the IUFRO Conference on Forests for People to January 15, 2013.
The submittal requirements and directions remain the same.

Upcoming International Meeting – June 2014 in Colorado, USA
A joint international meeting of three groups: IUFRO 2.02.15 (Breeding and Genetic Resources of Five-Needle Pines), IUFRO 7.02.05 (Rusts of Forest Trees) and Strobusphere is being scheduled for June* 2014 in Colorado (USA). This will be the first time these three groups have met together to share research in genetics-pathology of five-needle pines. The conference will feature advances in gene conservation, genomics, rust resistance and biology, evolutionary dynamics and other related topics. There will be some joint sessions as well as concurrent sessions organized by each respective group for other topics of interest.

Our Working Party on Breeding and Genetic Resources of Five-Needle Pines is concerned with research cooperation and exchange of information on all aspects of genetic research on the five-needle pines. This includes provenance and progeny testing, gene conservation, landscape genomics, breeding, species hybridization, clonal propagation and testing, tissue or cell culture, molecular genetics, and the genetics of host-pathogen interactions, as well as ecology, evolutionary dynamics and management of these species. Increasingly though we are using this knowledge to address issues related to climate change, land use pressure and conservation
7.02.05 – Rusts of forest trees

Our Working Party aims to bring together scientists and investigators working on tree rusts. Our goal is to foster scientific discussion and exchanges relating to tree rust epidemiology, biology, host-pathogen interactions, resistance, control and management, and genomics. Our working group meets approximately once every 4 years in locations in Europe, North America or Asia. We usually meet in locations that allow us to discuss our scientific findings and have field trips in a friendly and relaxed environment which is conducive to exchanges and debates. We want to place a strong emphasis on participation of young investigators and students, as these meetings provide unique experiences to meet and exchange with the related community.

In North America, a collaborative effort among researchers has begun, starting with a multi-national <http://dendrome.ucdavis.edu/strobusphere/workshop2008.php> White Pine Genomic Resource Workshop held on October 22-23, 2008 at the Dorena Genetic Resource Center in Cottage Grove, OR. The objective of this workshop was to discover and identify research objectives, strengths, scope and resources among the various working agencies. This collaborative effort is designed as a foundation to build wider scientific participation with a scope that spans molecular to landscape models, from host to pathogens and alternative hosts. The Strobusphere working group arose from this 2008 workshop. A notable work in progress: the sugar pine genome sequence is slated for completion in 2013 by PineRefSeq project ( <http://pinegenome.org/pinerefseq/> http://pinegenome.org/pinerefseq/) The sugar pine genome will be mostly finished and released to the public before the meeting in June 2014.

- The Poplar and Willow Genetics Working Party 2.08.04 announces revised
dates for the Sixth International Poplar Symposium (IPS-VI) to be
organized and hosted in 2014 in Vancouver, British Columbia (B.C.), Canada.
*_Revised dates of the symposium and associated activities_*:
1) Sunday the 20th of July 2014 (Registration) to and including
Wednesday the 23rd of July 2014.
2) Thursday the 24th to and including Sunday the 27th or possibly
Monday the 28th of July 2014 -- Combined Field trip and Post-conference
Circle Tour to the Interior of British Columbia.
- During the symposium there will be a spouses program.
- The proposed conference theme is based on a very relevant question:
Domestication of Populus and Salix: How far have we come, and how far do
we still have to go?
- As stated by the organizing committee
"The meeting in Vancouver will bring us an excellent opportunity to
compare our views and assemble the "right answer." The answer will
represent the view of the people interested in the science of poplar and
willow genetics, physiology and pathology. It will serve as a guide for
the future of poplar and willow cultivation in the world. Ultimately,
the answer should also be a guide for the amelioration of the
environment, industries, and the standard of living of rural communities
wherever poplars and willows are cultivated. This symposium strives to
address these issues and therefore invites researchers, practitioners,
regulatory and policy experts to help define what the challenges are and

which is jointly organized by the WP 1.01.09, 2.02.13, 2.02.09 and the
forest faculty of Kastamonu University. The meeting will be held on
Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, September 12-14, 2012 in Kastamonu, Turkey.

research outputs in fir ecosystem dynamics, recent threats and suitable

A pre-conference tour is offered separately which will bring you to the fir
forests of Bolu and Karabük.
