Registration for the World Congress on Agroforestry 2014 (WCA2014) has been open for several months, and will continue almost up to the date of the Congress. What is it?
The World Agroforestry Centre and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, together with the Indian Society of Agroforestry and Global Initiatives, will hold the Congress in Delhi, India 10-14 February 2014.
The Congress, entitled ‘Trees for Life: Accelerating the Impacts of Agroforestry’, will draw over 1200 selected participants from the private, research and development sectors to share the current state of knowledge and accelerate the positive financial, environmental and social impacts of agroforestry.

A more important date is the deadline to submit abstracts. Slots to present papers and take part in discussion sessions are filling up fast, and time is running out. The deadline for submissions is 30 September 2013, so you only have a little over two more weeks. Abstracts submitted for the Congress will be evaluated and accepted for one of the following options:
* Oral presentation (in some form) in relevant sessions
* Presentation as a poster
* Suitability for the congress compendium
All abstracts selected will be included in the congress compendium.
A dynamic agenda
The Congress has a number of themes. The first day features presentations on Indian topics related to agroforestry. The second part deals with business and agroforestry, third is a consideration of development and agroforestry, and fourth is a review of scientific breakthroughs and innovation. The final day looks at the integration of science, business and development, with keynote speakers and a panel discussion, and a plenary discussion of the outcomes. The full list of themes is:

* Climate change, multi-functionality, livestock and fish systems
(These two with an orientation towards India)
* The business of agroforestry: applying science
* Sustaining development through agroforestry
* Applying science to the future of agroforestry: breakthroughs and innovation

International Poplar Symposium VI

Focusing on the theme Domestication of Populus and Salix: How far have we come, and how far do we still have to go?, the symposium will address topics dealing with poplar and willow genetics, genomics, physiology, pests & pathology, environmental applications and management applications.

IUFRO AWARDS at the IUFRO World Congress 2014
Scientific Achievement Award (SAA)
Up to 10 awards to recognize distinguished individual scientific achievements within the fields of research covered by IUFRO. Criteria for judgment will be dissemination of results, implementation of knowledge, methods or techniques in practical forestry and skilled research management (success in publications, meetings, funding, etc. in a larger group than the individual) and involvement in IUFRO activities.
Outstanding Doctoral Research Award (ODRA)
One award per IUFRO Division to recognize outstanding individual scientific achievements among young Doctoral researchers and to encourage further work within the fields of research covered by the Union.
IUFRO Student Award (ISA)
One award per IUFRO Division to recognize outstanding individual achievements in forest science made by Masters degree students (or equivalent), and to encourage their further work within the fields of research covered by the Union. Nominations can be made through IUFRO member organizations or officeholders and through members of the International Forestry Students’ Association (IFSA).
Dear Mr. Buck,
I am Li Hui, Managing Editor of Forest Ecosystems, a new international Open Access journal established at Beijing Forestry University in cooperation with Springer Science. The project has excellent backing regarding available staff and other resources. We have two Editors in Chief, Dr. Yin WeiLun from China and Dr. Klaus v. Gadow from Germany, and an international Editorial Board which includes 25 Associate Editors and 5 Senior Editors.
Traditional journals are inundated with manuscripts and Forest Ecosystems will improve the chances for good papers to become available sooner. We will start publishing peer-reviewed original articles and critical reviews in January, 2014. The focus will be on individual papers and special issues relating to natural and managed forest ecosystems and their services to people. Manuscripts will go online and will be ready for download as soon as they are accepted. During the first two years, we will carry the cost of publishing Open Access.

It is a great pleasure for us to invite you to the Internationalconfere nce on Ozone and Plants (www.bj-ozone.com) to be held on 18 May – 21 May 2014, in Beijing, China.
The purposes of this conference are to summarize the state of the art of ozone research and to develop possible international collaborations. The conference is organized by IUFRO RG 7.01.00, by ICP vegetation and by State Key Laboratory of Urban and Regional Ecology.
The topics will be :
Session 1: Atmospheric chemistry and exchanges with the biosphere Session 2: Plant and ecosystem responses to ozone exposure Session 3: Monitoring, modelling and assessing ozone risk to terrestrial ecosystems Session 4: Interactions and feedbacks of ozone effects with the climate
Some oral and poster presentations will be invited to submit the manuscript to Environmental Pollution (IF. 3.746), Journal of Environmental Sciences (IF. 1.668) or iForest (IF. 0.547). After the conference, a two-day touristic trip to Beijing will be organized.

A joint meeting will be held June 15-20, 2014 in Ft. Collins, Colorado, U.S.A. bringing together scientists working with white pine species (5 needle pines) as well as those working with Rusts of Forest trees. See below for some information on the three groups convening.
This attachment is a First Announcement to those involved in white pine (5 needle pine ) genetics related work and conservation of these species. We are updating our email mailing list – please forward to your colleagues and have them contact us. More detailed information will be included in future announcement, but please get the dates and location on your calendars and begin planning to attend. Also, please see the ‘survey’ at the end of this email (or in the attached announcement) – a reply to Anna or myself would be VERY helpful as we continue planning for this conference.

Upcoming International Meeting – June 2014 in Colorado, USA
A joint international meeting of three groups: IUFRO 2.02.15 (Breeding and Genetic Resources of Five-Needle Pines), IUFRO 7.02.05 (Rusts of Forest Trees) and Strobusphere is being scheduled for June* 2014 in Colorado (USA). This will be the first time these three groups have met together to share research in genetics-pathology of five-needle pines. The conference will feature advances in gene conservation, genomics, rust resistance, evolutionary dynamics and other related topics. There will be some joint sessions as well as concurrent sessions organized by each respective group for other topics of interest.

Our Working Party on Breeding and Genetic Resources of Five-Needle Pines is concerned with research cooperation and exchange of information on all aspects of genetic research on the five-needle pines. This includes provenance and progeny testing, gene conservation, landscape genomics, breeding, species hybridization, clonal propagation and testing, tissue or cell culture, molecular genetics, and the genetics of host-pathogen interactions, as well as ecology, evolutionary dynamics and management of these species. Increasingly though we are using this knowledge to address issues related to climate change, land use pressure and conservation
7.02.05 – Rusts of forest trees

Our Working Party aims to bring together scientists and investigators working on tree rusts. Our goal is to foster scientific discussion and exchanges relating to tree rust epidemiology, biology, host-pathogen interactions, resistance, control and management, and genomics. Our working group meets approximately once every 4 years in locations in Europe, North America or Asia. We usually meet in locations that allow us to discuss our scientific findings and have field trips in a friendly and relaxed environment which is conducive to exchanges and debates. We want to place a strong emphasis on participation of young investigators and students, as these meetings provide unique experiences to meet and exchange with the related community.

In North America, a collaborative effort among researchers has begun, starting with a multi-national White Pine Genomic Resource Workshop<http://dendrome.ucdavis.edu/strobusphere/workshop2008.php> held on October 22-23, 2008 at the Dorena Genetic Resource Center in Cottage Grove, OR. The objective of this workshop was to discover and identify research objectives, strengths, scope and resources among the various working agencies. This collaborative effort is designed as a foundation to build wider scientific participation with a scope that spans molecular to landscape models, from host to pathogens and alternative hosts. The Strobusphere working group arose from this 2008 workshop. A notable work in progress: the sugar pine genome sequence is slated for completion in 2013 by PineRefSeq project (http://pinegenome.org/pinerefseq/) The sugar pine genome will be mostly finished and released to the public before the meeting in June 2014.
